It's Official: If You've Been Wondering, I Finally Have a Diagnosis at Nearly Age 50

Douglas.Curtis

Autistic Diplomat in Training
I have to say my interaction with the community here has been colorful. I greatly appreciate everyone who's taken the time to be patient with me, and to everyone who understands my intention is to help. After 10+ years of working toward figuring my issues out, I finally have an 'official' diagnosis.

I have severe ADHD, even when using strains which improve my memory. I'm on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum, and (on a bad day mentally for testing) I still test out as extremely intelligent.
:tiphat:

Though my intentions are to help, my diplomacy and way of wording things can be difficult to interpret properly. This has caused a lot of uproar in the past, and you have my apologies. As I continue to identify my issues, and learn to eliminate or work around/through them, I hope to be more clear and less disruptive.

Colorado Voc Rehab said I qualify to pick whatever career/field I want, and is sending me back to college. It's amazing how much funding the program has from cannabis taxes these days. TY Colorado voters, and myself for voting in A64!!! :) I'm planning on regularly participating here, though it will likely be a lot less than usual for a while.

Thank you for your support, and give yourself a pat on the back while you're at it.:dance013:

Congrats...I guess??? Happy for you to be on the path, good luck. Dealt with that diagnosis quite a bit, not sure if I could offer any help or insight but please feel free to send a PM or some such jazz if you ever want to chat. Again, good luck and all that and it's better to know than not.

Any career? Go for airline pilot, or better yet a private jet pilot for some rich guy who only goes to nice places.

^ You have to be a flight instructor and log a lot of hours training flight students before you can become an airline/jet pilot

Best of luck Douglas.

Welcome to the club. I got diagnosed at age 55, a bit over a year ago. In hindsight it explains a lot about my life. I thought I had Autism as I scored very high on a test but it ADHD instead.

OK fergit the airline pilot thing. Wait!!! Snoop did it! True story - I worked for a guy who was BRAC'd 30 yrs ago, and stayed home instead of moving with his job. He was offered retraining and he said pilot - so they paid for his training and license.

Seriously, good luck and enjoy college. Also realize that age is a factor in hiring, so study something you like and in a field that you have experience in.

Ok here is my dick moment and I dont care, Im trying to do you solid. Man Im so glad you found a reason and some quack to diagnose your failures. Do you give the alleged affliction credit for your successes at parts of your life? Or do you reckon were all just folks and some do better than others for reasons fate or the gods throw out there?

Honestly why is it everyone has to have a reason they are not an astronaut or inventor of the cure for cancer? Cant we just be who we are? I know some really cool people who are prone to be flaming assholes at times. People who are bad at some things and great at others. World class in many ways. Total failures in others. They just dont have the stupid social media and total sensory overload that is the internet today. This sounds like a millennial group dutch rudder (insert for those who are to busy trying to diagnose themselves here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGUuugNEUcU) instead of just trying to be who we are. WHY THE HELL DO SOME OF YOU DRIVE YOUR SELF NUTS TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT DEFECT YOU PERCEIVE YOURSELF TO HAVE WHEN YOU DONT.

I sure as hell dont want to set foot on a plane that your in any seat up front from the way it sounds. Maybe you will be listening to dr phil and suddenly change your mind and fly into the ground.

I and most of the rest of the world like it or not can deal with individuals being who they are letting it go at that. Why does everyone feel like they have to have some kind of diagnosis for being really nice or being an asshole or being somewhere in between ? Where is your diagnosis that you may like marijuana is dangerous and you need treatment for that affliction??!!

I really wanted to be a porn star slash fireman slash NFL star. I just need to find a quack with a md to laugh his ass off while he takes my money and tells me I have a condition. For fucks sake dude just be who you are and stop feeling guilty. I am sure Id like you much better in person if you just were who you are instead of pretending to be someone with some condition. Stop looking for whats wrong with you and tell those who find things wrong with you to fuck off. Ever kill someone or commit a violent crime? Short of that dude your just one of us. Normal mostly.

Oh and I forgot to send the the bill. Send me your insurance info via PM so I can bill you at half the rate as some frat boy with an MD did. Id prefer cash though. Did you laugh at that ? Good.

This reminds of an old saying-

"When someone says, 'He's a great guy once you get to know him.' What they are really saying is, 'He's a dick but you get used to it.'"

Love ya buddy!

Douglas I say good on you for looking at yourself and finding some wisdom. Understanding is difficult to find in this world and is even looked down on by many people in this Anti science and knowledge culture that is the disunited states.

Greatly appreciate it everyone, thank you.

Angry much? I urge you to get to know yourself better. You spend 24/7/365 around you, and the more you know yourself the better life becomes.

I've always been negative about therapy, the therapists usually needed more help than I did. Most psychologists and psychiatrists I've met are classically educated and nearly worthless. However, there are a few good ones out there, and a newer, better educated crop is entering the field these days.

The unfortunate truth is, MOST of amurica and the world needs therapy. lol If you're an adult with autism, you generally have a lot of trauma you should work through. ;) Be brave and shop around for a good counselor or therapist.

In the end, it took over 10 years to get a confirmation on most of what I already know. The great part is, the latest round of testing pointed out significant deficiencies in a key area. Sure sheds light on why I can understand complex technology, but cleaning a room seems out of my skill set. LOL

Be good to yourselves, precious few others on the planet will. :tiphat:

 That is interesting. It is a fight to clean MY room since I can remember. Is that part of your condition too? I thought everyone has this. At least it must be a hereditary condition in my family

Does the ADHD diagnosis change something in your life?
Do they have a pill against chaotic rooms?
Sorry my ignorance.
