BERLIN — German police are looking for a rare 1980s Ferrari sports car believed to be worth more than 2 million euros ($2.2 million) after a man posing as a would-be buyer stole it during a test drive.

Police in Duesseldorf said the man answering an advertisement for the red Ferrari 288 GTO, first registered in 1985, turned up for a previously agreed appointment in the western German city on Monday.

He and the seller went on a test drive, during which the seller got out of the car to swap places with the would-be buyer. The man got into the driver's seat, hit the gas pedal and sped off.

The Ferrari was recovered Tuesday in the nearby Grevenbroich area, where it was hidden in a garage. Police are still seeking the thief and released a picture Wednesday of a middle-aged man, and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Police are seeking this man in connection with the speedy theft. He kind of looks like Herman the German.

I'm getting suspicious....

There's nothing lower than a thief in my book. Glad they found the car, pieces like that are not simply owned, they are privately curated.

Ferrari 288 GTO Group B & The History Behind It

Ferrari 288 GTO Group B & The History Behind It

Apparently, this particular GTO was formerly owned by none other than former F1 driver Eddie - Irv the swerve - Irvine, and has 43,000 original kms on the clock.

Ferrari only built 272 production GTO's. It was built to compete in the new Group B Circuit Race series and a minimum of 200 production cars were required for FIA homologation. Due to lackluster participation caused by these regulations, the Group B Circuit series never took off. As a result, the GTO never raced and all 272 cars built remained purely road cars.

When produced, all 272 came in one color, red, except one. Allegedly, there was one that left the factory in Modena painted black. If true, that particular GTO would be worth way more money because of it's rarity. One of one in Ferrari speak translates to big $$$$$.

Ferrari had ended production of the car, but Niki Lauda pulled some strings, and Enzo Ferrari had one extra and last one built for him. Wikipedia claims that it was gifted to him, but that's bullshit. They got it wrong. Lauda did indeed receive the last production GTO, but he had to pay for it.

Moreover, because of the inherent dangers of Group B rallying - the cars were wickedly fast - and the deaths on May 2, 1986, of Henri Toivonen, and his co-driver Sergio Cresto, while driving a Lancia Delta S4 during the Tour de Corse Rallye de France, Group B was banned by the FIA, and it all ended.

Toivonen and his co-driver died here aged 29, having competed in 40 world rallies, with three wins, nine podium places, and 185 stage wins to his name. Lancia team boss, Cesare Fiorio, later claimed that he was the only driver that could really control the Delta S4.
