Woman blamed for explosion at motel sentenced to prison

Cadillac, Mich. – A woman who authorities say caused an explosion and fire in a northern Michigan motel room that injured her two children has been sentenced to more than six years in prison.

Authorities say Amanda Lynn Skardoutos was trying to make butane hash oil on May 17 when she was injured in the explosion at Green Mill Motel in Manton.

She pleaded no contest last month to second-degree child abuse and third-degree arson. A judge on Monday sent her to prison for 80 to 120 months. She initially faced charges including maintaining a drug house.

Skardoutos apologized in court, saying she accepted her punishment.

Roughly half of the motel was destroyed. Police say her children were severely burned. She was living with them at the motel.

MEDFORD, Ore. — A man is sentenced to 45 months in jail for endangering the lives of two children and another adult in an explosion that happened at Grants Pass trailer park last year.

According to court documents, On February 14th, 2016 Brian Keith Sunkenberg, 53, purchased multiple large cans of butane to use to produce hash oil with two other people.

Later that day, the butane ignited and caused a massive explosion and fire that destroyed his trailer and damaged a nearby trailer.
Two children present inside the trailer at the time of the explosion suffered second and third degree burns.

An investigation revealed twenty six 300 ml canisters of butane and 10 empty canisters that had exploded in the incident.

After the incident, Sunkenberg and two friends visited the hospital where one of the minors was being treated for their injuries. Sunkenberg threatened the parents of the child with "consequences" if the child talked to investigators.

In a statement DEA Special Agent in Charge Keith Weis said, “Justice has been served to this reckless individual whose selfish criminal actions put our citizens lives in jeopardy, to include almost killing innocent children.”

Sunkenberg was ordered to pay $27,671 in restitution.

Eight people were inside a home when something exploded in the garage. Tulare County sheriff's deputies believe the garage was being used as a drug lab.

Deputies were called just after 7 p.m. to a home in the 12400 block of Buena Vista in Orosi.

When deputies and Tulare County firefighters arrived, they learned that an explosion started a "flash fire" in the family garage.

Among the eight people inside were two children who were not injured.

While investigating the explosion, firefighters and deputies discovered evidence of a butane honey oil lab. Tulare Area Gang and Narcotics Enforcement Team detectives were called to begin an investigation.

Detectives said they found additional evidence, ammunition and a gun.

Detectives believe 25-year-old Hector Flores and 28-year-old Oscar Breceda were operating the lab. Both fled the scene before deputies arrived.

Honey oil contains extremely high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol and can be up to four times more potent than high-grade marijuana, according to California's Department of Justice.

Butane is used to strip the marijuana of its oils, which then drip from the bottom of tubes, through a filter and into a container. It looks like honey.

Extracting in a garage with an adjoining inhabited home is highly irresponsible. Full flow through ventilation is difficult, and garages often contain ignition sources like water heaters.

A Medford man has been charged with first-degree child neglect after a neighbor called 911 to report a baby was in the street eating dirt and cigarette butts.

Shawn David Munro, 26, of the 2300 block of East Barnett Road, was scheduled to be arraigned on the charge Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court. He failed to appear and a warrant was issued for his arrest, according to court records.

On Sept. 3, a neighbor called authorities after seeing Munro near his car, which was parked along the street near his apartment, according to a probable cause affidavit.

“Munro was reportedly dozing off, and his 11-month-old child was in the street eating dirt and cigarette butts,” the affidavit said.

Medford police officers responded and found Munro inside his apartment, along with about 17 butane bottles and concentrated marijuana oil, the affidavit said.

Munro allegedly admitted he was making the marijuana concentrate and said he thought it was legal to do so, the affidavit said.

In October, Munro was accused by a grand jury of first-degree child neglect for allegedly allowing a child to be in a premises where a cannabinoid extract was being processed without state licensing.

Butane is a highly flammable liquid that can lead to fires and explosions.

In February 2016, Brian Keith Sunkenberg, 53, had cans of butane in a Grants Pass trailer. The butane ignited, causing a massive explosion and fire. Sunkenberg and two children received second and third-degree burns, according to court documents.

Earlier this month, Sunkenberg was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison after he pleaded guilty to endangering human life by manufacturing marijuana in the form of hash oil.

In January 2016, Troy Allen Wyatt, 44, caused an explosion that endangered his sleeping daughter and severely damaged a Medford garage. Wyatt, who suffered burns, was attempting to make a marijuana extract known as butane honey oil, according to prosecutors.

In September, Wyatt was sentenced to 18 months in prison for endangering human life.

DENVER -- Denver firefighters responded to an explosion involving a butane hash oil extraction operation Tuesday afternoon.

It happened in the 4800 block of Hooker Street.

A Denver Fire Department spokesperson said there were reports of two people suffering burn injuries. He did not know the extent of their injuries. They were transported to a hospital.

The explosion damaged and partially collapsed a detached garage at the residence. Crews were working to stabilize the structure.

A Salem man was arrested on arson, marijuana and drug dealing charges after he allegedly ignited a house, shed and car while making butane hash oil Monday.

Firefighters responding to the 800 block of Wind Meadows Place NE treated David Edgar, 37, for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

According to a probable cause statement, Edgar told police he was making butane hash oil in a shed when the butane gas caught fire. The flames burned through the shed and spread to a nearby car and house, which were both owned by Edgar's roommate.

Butane hash oil, also known as BHO, is a concentrated marijuana extract made by using highly flammable butane as a solvent to create a sludgy oil or wax. The hash's high THC concentration — up to 80 percent — gives users a faster, more powerful high.

Hash oil is legal to make and sell at licensed facilities, but the unlawful manufacture of BHO is a felony.

Inside the shed, investigators found more than two ounces of BHO extract, about 100 used canisters of butane gas, a pressure cooker, air compressor, hot plate and metal tube containing marijuana.

Edgar told police he used the marijuana and equipment to make BHO extract, which he smoked.

Officers also found text messages on Edgar's phone indicating he planned to give or sell some of the extract to his friends.

He was arrested on charges of first-degree arson relating the manufacture of a cannabinoid extract, unlawful manufacture of a marijuana item and unlawful delivery of a marijuana item.

He was taken to Marion County jail and held on $70,000 bail.

Emergency crews and law enforcement officers have expressed concern about the spike in hash oil-related fires. In 2016, Salem saw its first BHO-related explosion when a home near Roberts High School erupted in flames. Two minors were home at the time of the fire, and two people were arrested on child neglect and drug charges.

YouTube videos on how to make the substance are readily available, but the spark of a cigarette or refrigerator compressor can easily ignite an explosion.

This is what happens when people don't understand the chemistry of what they are playing with.

There's a reason you need a gas licence to install propane and natural gas appliances.

Evidence of hash oil extraction found at Weld County trailer explosion, investigators say

WELD COUNTY, Colo. — There was evidence of a butane hash oil extraction operation at the site of a semi-trailer explosion Monday night. The Weld County Sheriff’s Office released that information Tuesday.

Two people were injured in the explosion.

The blast happened at 7878 County Road 21 in Fort Lupton just after 8 p.m. Monday

When deputies arrived, they found a fifth wheel trailer had exploded and was fully engulfed in flames.

A 32-year-old man and a 71-year-old man were taken to Northern Colorado Medical Center for treatment of burns. They were in serious condition Tuesday night.

Weld County Drug Task Force and Weld County Sheriff’s Office investigators are working together to continue this investigation.

Explosion knocked a Modesto house off its foundation. Why were 2 people arrested?

Two people have been arrested in connection with a hash oil lab explosion at a triplex in southeast Modesto on Thursday.

A buildup of butane gas in the refrigerator of the home in a 200 block of Gerita Court, northwest of Yosemite Boulevard and Lincoln Avenue, caused the explosion, according to Modesto Police Lt. Tom Ciccarelli.

Butane is used to extract hash oil from marijuana.

The explosion occurred just before noon and knocked the frame of the home six inches off its foundation, Ciccarelli said.

It caused structural damage to the adjoining units as well and power had to be cut to the entire building, displacing the residents of the entire triplex. Six adults and two children were displaced but no one was injured.

Nelson Esparza Suarez, 33, and Monica Paulina Santana, 23, were arrested on suspicion of manufacturing of narcotics.

Suarez also was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment.

Ciccarelli did not know whether the child or children lived in the home where the explosion occurred or in one of the adjoining units.

Regular refrigerators are not made to store very volatile solvents.

When the motor kicks on an explosion can be set off if the container with the solvent in leaks.

Sadly, these explosions are only going to increase.

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (KOLO)-- A man was hospitalized Sunday after a flash fire in Gardnerville caused severe burns on his arms, East Fork Fire Protection District Capt. Terry Taylor said.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said the fire was caused by butane-hash oil extraction of THC from marijuana.

The fire and explosion happened about 2:41 p.m. at the complex at 1330 Stodick Parkway.

The scene is considered safe and criminal charges are pending, the sheriff's office said.

Butane honey oil lab found in home after explosion

An explosion at an Orion Township home Saturday afternoon may have been caused by a butane honey oil lab in the basement, authorities reported.

One man was injured with burns to his face and lower arms after trying to light a cigarette from the stovetop.

All five in the home on the 3000 block of Gregory Road escaped the house after the explosion and subsequent fire, which blew out the windows on the lower level of the home, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The fire was reported at 3:21 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, and firefighters from the Orion Township Fire Department extinguished the fire while the sheriff’s Fire Investigator looked for the cause and source.

Later, the sheriff’s Narcotics Enforcement Team responded as a “large amount of marijuana shake” was found in the basement with the butane honey oil lab.

Butane honey oil is a potent kind of hash as the oil is vaporized and consumed, according to a report in the LA Times.

Suspected drug lab explosion injures two people at Camino home

A 39-year-old man was injured and a juvenile suffered smoke inhalation in an explosion that El Dorado County sheriff’s officials say was caused by an illegal butane extraction lab at a Camino residence.

The El Dorado County Fire Department responded about 3:25 p.m. Monday after an explosion was heard at a residence in the 5100 block of Pony Express Trail. Fire personnel notified sheriff’s deputies and detectives that the explosion might have been caused by a butane extraction operation, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

Medical personnel at the scene treated Joshua Jamison of Camino for burns to his face. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was treated and released, the news release said. A juvenile also was transported to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and later released.

Two other juveniles who were inside the home when the explosion occurred were not injured, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives and an arson investigator quickly determined that the explosion resulted from an illegal butane extraction lab in the bathroom of the home that was being used to produce concentrated cannabis, the news release said.

The residence suffered considerable structural damage from the blast. Interior walls were cracked or moved, and exterior walls were pushed off the foundation, according to the news release. El Dorado County code enforcement officials were called to the scene and determined the home was unsafe to occupy.

Sheriff’s detectives subsequently served a search warrant at the home and collected evidence indicating the presence of a butane extraction lab, the news release said.

The investigation is continuing, and the Sheriff’s Office said the case will be forwarded to the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office for review. No arrests have been made.

Suspect At Large after Honey Oil Lab Explosion in Rocklin Apartment

ROCKLIN -- Windows were blown out and an apartment building was evacuated after an explosion Saturday evening.

The Rocklin Police Department reports a small honey oil operation caused the explosion at a 2nd Street apartment complex.

"All the sudden I felt the floor roll, and my ears pop, and I heard glass shattering," said neighbor John Roberston.

Robertson said he lives upstairs from the apartment where the explosion happened.

As of 8:30 p.m., it was unclear if the building would be safe to re-enter. A structural engineer will assess the damage to the building Monday and determine what repairs need to be made before residents are allowed to return home.

"Threw open their window, shoved the hose through the window and said, 'Put the freakin' fire out.' They looked at me like I'm dumb. 'What do we do with the hose?'" Robertson recalled. "There was a fire in the bathroom, basically what was going on."

A suspect ran from the scene of the explosion and has not been found by Rocklin police.

"My understanding is, we only had one person who had some real minor injuries," said Sgt. Gilbert Farrulla. "Nobody was transported to the hospital."

Other residents of the apartment building could be seen carrying belongings to their cars as they looked for somewhere else to stay.

Robertson said he's been suspicious about drug activity in the apartment beneath his for some time.

"Oh, I'm mad as heck. Yeah, I go to work everyday, I do it the right way. And you got people who sit at home and do this kind of dumb s*** all day," he said.

Education and as a reminder.

If you go back far enough, there was a similar discussion and we decided to keep it going as eyeopeners to the ingenue and reminders to old hands, because of how serious an issue it is.

Since we had that discussion, many of our worst fears have been realized with legislation enacted by lawmakers who've been shaken and scared at what just one of these "Ooop's" can do to a house full of people and those around it.

Having personally seen the aftermath of one, which totally destroyed one home and severely damaged the ones beside it, besides killing one innocent and the perpetrator, I can attest it was an eyeopener.

Kudos and accolades to SH for putting forth that effort!
