Obama DEA employs ‘smashing’ new tactic to intimidate cannabis pharmacies

The Drug Enforcement Administration in cooperation with a patchwork of Michigan state law enforcement entities has, over the past three weeks, conducted a series of cannabis dispensary searches in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti areas that have been described by the press as “smash and grab” raids.
The series of raids, including two just last week, are characterized by groups of federal drug agents, sometimes supported by local or state police, swooping into cannabis pharmacies in unmarked vans and SUVs with no sirens or flashing lights. The federal agents’ flash Michigan state warrants and seize cannabis plants and cash. In a series of raids beginning on July 30, agents did not leave copies of the state warrants at the three cannabis pharmacies that were raided.
No arrests have been made in the series of ‘smash and grab’ raids, and the searches seem to end as abruptly as they begin when cash is confiscated and dispensary employees begin photographing the raiding agents. The Michigan chapter of Americans for Safe Access (ASA) issued a ‘raid alert’ after the Ann Arbor pharmacy raid.
In addition to these raids, three cannabis dispensaries in Detroit were raided in the past weeks by the Detroit Police using the same pattern of quick entry and quick exit. In these raids, the Detroit Police were accompanied by Michigan State Police, agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and a Detroit city code enforcement official.
Medical cannabis advocates in Michigan are concerned about the new tactics used in these DEA raids, especially in light of the fact that federal agents are serving state-issued warrants. Also of concern is the DEA’s reliance upon state police instead of local police to support the raids. Critics feel the federal agents are choosing to partner with statewide law enforcement entities to preclude local police from participating in the raids in locations, such as Ann Arbor, where there is broad public support for the use of cannabis for medical relief.
The DEA is a federal law enforcement organization within the US Justice Department, an agency under the executive branch. Just last week, a spokesperson for President Obama told the nation that “the president and the administration believe that targeting individual marijuana users, especially those with serious illnesses and their caregivers, is not the best allocation for federal law enforcement resources.”

I don't understand how the feds can execute a state warrant. Or maybe they were "invited" by the state and local leos for added intimidation? Seems like nothing but thuggery and thievery, and calculated to intimidate. Glad nobody was arrested. Best wishes to all Michigan folks.

911 what's your emergency? A BLACK UNMARKED VAN FULL OF MEN WITH GUNS IS ROBBING MY STORE! HELP!

A local cop who refuses to uphold local law does not keep his job very long, some use these kinds of things as stepping stones to federal work, but most need to work like the rest of us and can't afford to piss off their neighbors, that's why the DEA has stopped involving locals.

The people partaking in such foolishness can't be too smart. Don't they realize when the dust settles and cannabis is an accepted part of every day life and a practical and effective medicine, be it 25 years, 50 years or 500 years from now, they will be viewed like these people:

That is not to say that cannabis = racism. What it represents is a group of grown ass men, with developed brains, doing something that is clearly wrong, clearly is not wanted, clearly has no backing in any scientific or moral standard. They have devoted their one life on this planet, this universe, to something that will assuredly be looked back on and scoffed at as being infantile and WRONG, while diluting themselves into thinking they are "fighting the good fight". Zero foresight, zero self-thinking, completely pathetic and a waste of life. All things you as a human have a right to "being" if you so choose. It becomes a waste when what you are negatively impacts others.

Right fucken on, Applesauce!
My thoughts exactly.

Them goddamn intolerant bastards!

Hopefully someone booby-traps one of them shops so the next smash & grab robbery ends up in "a national tragedy".

Sorry, but it really boils my blood. And seriously, if it did end up a "tragedy", I would not feel the least bit bad about it.

Live by the sword...

That's the problem. Nobody involved thinks past career advancement, next year's department budget, or a coming re-election. And for sure nobody wants to admit that what they're doing is wrong and give up all that money and job security.

These douchebags don't give a fuck about the future. Or about the futures of the people they're affecting.

The read other day I read one of his new tactics is to bar armored car services from picking up and delivering cash for pot related businesses in CA and CO.

It's ridiculous how far they will go to fight against the will of the people. This med, legalization was voted in by the people, it should be the end of the story.

You see the truth behind the bullshit, there is no jobs, but when an industry opens up that can provide good paying jobs for people they try do everything in their power to ruin it. It's almost like they want Amerika to be a poverty stricken nation.

I've always wondered why this doesn't happen. Under state law, the DEA agents are armed thieves. And local LEO are supposed to enforce state law. Seems like it would only take a few standoffs between local LEO and DEA agents to make the DEA reconsider their strategy.

I've heard of these actually happening, but usually local leo is looking for an excuse to cooperate with the DEA, when they protect patients it's because they're being forced by lawyers or supervisors.
