Smoking marijuana provides more pain relief for men than women

Researchers from Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) found that men had greater pain relief than women after smoking marijuana.
Results of the study were recently published online in Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
“These findings come at a time when more people, including women, are turning to the use of medical cannabis for pain relief,” said Ziva Cooper, PhD, associate professor of clinical neurobiology (in psychiatry) at CUMC. “Preclinical evidence has suggested that the experience of pain relief from cannabis-related products may vary between sexes, but no studies have been done to see if this is true in humans.”
In this study, the researchers analyzed data from two double-blinded, placebo-controlled studies looking at the analgesic effects of cannabis in 42 recreational marijuana smokers. After smoking the same amount of either an active or placebo form of cannabis, the participants immersed one hand in a a cold-water bath until the pain could no longer be tolerated. Following the immersion, the participants answered a short pain questionnaire.
After smoking active cannabis, men reported a significant decrease in pain sensitivity and an increase in pain tolerance. Women did not experience a significant decrease in pain sensitivity, although they reported a small increase in pain tolerance shortly after smoking.
Despite differences in pain relief, men and women did not report differences in how intoxicated they felt or how much they liked the effect of the active cannabis.
The authors noted that additional studies in both men and women are needed to understand the factors that impact the analgesic effects of cannabinoids, the active chemicals in cannabis products, including strength, mode of delivery (smoked versus oral), frequency of use and type of pain measured.
“This study underscores the importance of including both men and women in clinical trials aimed at understanding the potential therapeutic and negative effects of cannabis, particularly as more people use cannabinoid products for recreational or medical purposes,” said Dr. Cooper.

Could it be that men are more pain tolerant from the start?

Does the type of pain make a difference?

If all that was done was a cold water bath with a hand that's not much of a study.

Oh yeah, were the participants pain threshold measured previous to toking up?

Too many questions...

i watched both of my sons being born. if men had to do that, there would be a hell of a lot fewer people running around in my opinion...:tiphat:

What the hell?
How do you have negative 1 post?

Yep, ol hippy, I'm absolutely positive the world population would be much smaller if we men had to go through that.

it should. different people react to different types of pain in different ways. my arthritis is very well treated with cannabis. migraines are shots in the dark; i've had it cause them, and relieve them. flip of the coin...

Women have more thc in their systems as a base line. They can handle more pain, without any help.

Lots of different types of pain. Even the types of headaches. There's overused muscle type pain. TMG pain, which is horrid, avoid avoid avoid. There's the itchy, annoying pain that happens just beneath the skin that seems 'all over' that i attribute to a fibro flare. Stiffness pain from arthritis or rheuma tiz. Some pain feels like it's right down to the middle of the bone. Paper cuts have their own little zingy thing. Hit the thumb with the hammer throb. None very pleasant, each has a personality. Earaches/toothache. SHINGLES. Frost bite (ever had lungs get frosted? We northern mice know that one, takes the breath away, so to speak)

I have so many types. Mostly, i use Cannabis and it helps a lot, sometimes on the pain itself, sometimes just to cope with it and to be able get on with life. And, one of the most helpful Cannabis traits is keeping my systems regulated. I don't know if it was the metal poisoning or the fibro or maybe even all the early day's 'ether' that was used for surgeries (who the hell knows?), but one thing is for sure, it helps with my troubles keeping my body temps regulated.

Also, so many men have been in 'competition' to see who can withstand pain, that i think they've trained themselves to not show it and go beyond what they would normally not tolerate. You know the games that are/were played.

Nerve pain I've found def worse then x broken bones

one of the main uses for cannabis medically before it was outlawed was for diabetic neuropathy, the nerve damage pain that shoots through your toes/feet like electrical shocks. yeah, i'd take a broken leg if that would go away...
