not so concerned about how to prevent, more curious about how long it will hold in that environment.

If your only option is a defrosting fridge or even if you have access to a lab fridge that stays constant, the viability of pollen can be increased by freezing it in glass or plastic cryo vials submerged in something like DMSO which will act as a buffer to changing temps. This is how cell culture specimens are preserved without the effects of ice crystal formation.

Regardless, I'd say 17 years via Sam's method is pretty damn long. I'd sure like to have a fridge stocked with pollen from strains that long ago...

I also am curious about pollen viability when simply left on the floor. I filled a closet with males and just let 'em pop, been sitting for a month or so...what would I expect the reduction in successful pollination ratios to be?
