Dan's Perpetual Experiment

Hey guys, I recently got some new seeds and thought I'd start a new journal. I've started a couple in the past but I always end up forgetting to post after a while so hopefully I actually stick with this one. This is going to be my first attempt at doing a perpetual grow so any advice will be greatly appreciated. Especially when it comes to taking clones. I've only ever grown from seed before and I've lost too many good cuts in the past.

The strains i'll be growing are:

Purple Punch x Gelato 33
Purple Punch x MAC
Runtz x (F1 Durb x Gushers)
Runtz x Strawnana

All from Purple City Genetics. Has anyone had any experience with these strains or breeder?

I planted 2 seeds of each strain in Root Riot cubes on the 3rd and one PPxG33 has sprouted and one RxS is just about to break ground. Once all have popped up I'll be putting them in a small 75cm x 75cm x 130cm tent under a 125w CFL and transplanting into coco. I'll be using Shogun nutes. I then plan on vegging until they fill up the tent then moving them to a 120cm x 120cm x 2m tent under a 400w light. I'll then take some clones off each and put them in the CFL tent and carry on vegging the others for about a week under the 400w. Then I'll flip to flower and bump up the light to 600w.

So that's the plan. I know I'm probably going to get the timings wrong the first couple times but eventually I'll dial it in. What do you guys think? If anyone's got any advice I'd really appreciate it.

All have now sprouted except one Runtz x (F1 Durb x Gushers) but that looks like it should pop either tomorrow or the next day

The last RxF1xD has sprouted. It took a wrong turn on the way up and got caught in an air bubble in the root riot cube. I dug it out and it was completely closed and yellow but it's starting to open and has greened up quite a bit so I think it'll be alright.

I'm going to transplant all of them into their first pots and bury their stems a bit in the morning.

All transplanted into their first pots with a bit of great white thrown in there. Gonna build the little tent and put them in there in the morning. Does
anyone know if a 125w clf will be too big of a light for such small seedlings or will it be alright if it's at the top of a 1.3m tall tent?

Got them all into their new home today. Does anyone have any recommendations on how close a 125w cfl can get to them when they're this small? I've only ever vegged under a 250w hps that I start right at the top of my tent but this is a smaller light in a smaller tent so I'm not too sure. I know the cfl can get pretty close when they're a bit more established but they're only about 4-5 days old right now.

I would get that light as close to the plants as possible. Is your 125w cfl a bulb? Use the back of your hand as a gauge just feel the heat coming off of light and if it feels too hot, raise the light.

I just started my grow too and put them under 4ft cfl's (6500K) I've got the light like 1" above the plants. I will use the 4ft tubes until they are about 6" tall then will move to a 315 CMH.

Anyways, good luck with your experiment!

Thanks Tahoe. It's one of those big bulbs with a wing reflector. I'm not too worried about the heat, although I did really stress/burn them yesterday because I forgot to open any of the flaps and it got to 35c here in the uk. I have an infrared thermometer so I can see temps and adjust. I was thinking more about light intensity?

Like I said, as close as possible! Get yourself a temp/humidity meter that has high and low alarms. That way if the temps do get too high, at least you have an auditory alarm to let you know before stressing your plants out.

You would do yourself a huge service by upgrading your light to at least a T5 fluorescent or even an LED fixture.

Your bulb
Specifications

  • Primary growing area: 2' x 2'
  • Secondary growing area: 3' x 3'
  • Recommended height above plants: 6" to 2'
  • Light output: 8500 lumens
  • Heat output: Low
  • Bulb life: 10,000 hours
  • Wattage: 125
  • Dimensions: 14" x 4"

Growing Area
The growing areas listed above assume the light bulbs are being used in a fixture with a reflector.
Primary - Use this area if the grow light will be the main or only source of light for the plants. This includes areas where minimal light comes from windows or standard house/office lights.

Secondary - Use this area if the grow light will be used in a greenhouse or other area that receives direct sunlight for part of the day to supplement the light from the sun.

These CFL grow lights are available in 2 different color spectrums. The 2700k bulb provides increased output in the red spectrum which promotes flowering & budding in plants. The 6400k bulbs are full spectrum bulb which promotes overall plant growth. Requires a larger mogul fixture or socket and 110/120 volt outlet. The light output of these bulbs are the same as a 500 watt incandescent bulb.

Here is some heat comparisons:

Heat Output Type of Bulb Average Bulb Temperature:
LED & T5 Fluorescent 100 to 120° F
CFL (Compact Fluorescent) 130 to 180° F
Incandescent 220 to 260° F
MH and HPS 450 to 550° F

Thanks Tahoe. Money's a bit tight right now but I'll look into those for the next time. My CFL says its around 12000 lumens. Is that recommendation still the same? Sorry for all the questions.

I'm finally starting to get some real growth now. About 2 weeks ago it was 35c outside and I didn't have my ventilation set up so all my seedlings got really badly burnt. If you look at their first single leaves you can see they're all a bit warped. 2 seedlings were so burn hey actually died. R.I.P. PPxG33 and RxS. I thought one of Rx(F1DxG) was going to die as well so I planted another seed of each strain and now have 2 of all strains again and 3 of the Rx(F1DxG) so 9 total. I'm hoping the seedlings will survive until Friday when I can get some Great White to transplant them with.

Thanks. They took a little while to recover from getting burnt but seem to be growing normally now. I've had some smelly plants in veg before but the PPxG33 #1 (middle left) smells so good already. I can't wait to try it.
