WHY ARE PEOPLE STILL RUNNING WINDOWS?! I'm going to loose it pretty soon here, honestly. I am speechless. Uterly speechless. If you care at all about security then Windows is the LAST thing you should be running. Erase your hard drive NOW and install Linux. It is the ONLY way. It is simple. Faster. Secure. Reliable and free (the code too). Need I say more? Seriously, people need to educate themselves. You have no idea the danger and the risk you put yourselves in by running Windows. I don't even know if it is possible to emphasize this enough. Commercialism is the babylon system. Resist the monopoly corporatate empires and embrace the freely available open source methods! Google and most of the Internet servers run Linux because of its security and reliability, why don't you? Linux is so much better, it is free because it's creator wants to protect the public from evil corporate empires, it is better in so many ways compared to conventional commercial operating systems. Windows is the worst operating system available, it is the bottom of the line, it is only popular due to advertising. Don't be a fool for advertisements. Run Linux. It is better than anything available. If you need more info, just ask or go to www.debian.org if you feel like reading for yourself.

Windows does suck.... but since 90% of the applications written out there are for the x86 architecture.... ill stick with what I got.

Linux is also for x86 architecture and now provides FULL compatability with Windows. This is no longer a valid excuse. Educate yourself; what is freedom worth to you? You're playing right into "their" hands by running Windows.

Started on Commodore Pet, went to Vic 20, C64, C128.....then went to the Amiga 1000, Amiga 500, Amiga 3000 and ran my Video Business off a Amiga 4000 w/Video Toaster!!!
Eventually went to Mac, now on a DP G5 (eventually had to move off that Toaster).
While I can run Linux, I admit Im too lazy/buzy to bother....and my son who does use windoze only plays games that won't run under linux

BUT.... you CAN protect yourself using windoze, start by NOT installing SP2 and letting norton handle that, then use a secure tunnel, then use an anonymizer....(and something like this thread suggests!)

There is no need to give up just because you are stuck in a rut, but heed Cannabisorus' words...... Your safety is/should be your prime concern!

I use plenty of Windows software that has problems with windows let alone Linux. yes I have Linux used oit for an internet terminal. No serious bussiness applications that are mainstream. I have friends with apple computer and forget about it.

If I used this computer just for the internet alone than fine, but like many others, this is just one of many uses for this machine. thanks for the heads up.

I remember buying my first computer back before Windows ~ I ran DOS for years before Windows ever came out ~ then there was the Windows 3.1 ~ I have been following Windows from the begging and I still use Windows today imo it is as secure as any other ~ being secure is not so much about (OS) Operating System as it is the (Operator!)

I have a Linux setting right beside me as I write these and imo it is a piece of shit………..I suppose that if I was a programmer it would have some purpose but I’m not, so for the average person I would subject Windows and use a good proxy to surf the net ~ btw it is also my opinion that there is no perfect (OS) there all flawed because they was made by man ~ so imp use only FireFox Browser and never use Explore, and always use a proxy and always change your proxy ever two days no matter what and start from there.

Hay scoobie ~ you ask what is the real threat about internet browsing? Well if you have the time do a search on all the most popular mj-sites and look and see how many folks are getting busted over surfing these sites and you will see that the risk is very small compared to all the other stupid thing that growers do ~ the pigs don’t have to spend thousands of man hours and money in man time looking for growers these days all they have to do is set back and wait for there neighbor to call in about the funky small coming out of your house, or a pissed off girl friend how should never know about your grow in the first place!!! Or a divorced wife!! Or the big one that is the grow partner that decides to fuck you!! ~ anyway there’s a tone of reasons way that the DEA/LO or pigs do not need to look at the internet, THEY DON’T HAVE TO, most of the time all they have to do is visit one of these sites and we tell them all they need to know………………….soooooo to make a long story short ~ take care of the other things first and then worry about the internet when every thing alas is done.

So can i run any and all applications or games, even the modern ones (i.e. hl2 bf2), that are written for XP on linux?

if i can... ill switch over today.

As someone who's full time job includes network security and administration; i would advise everyone to not rely on a program with no apparent purpose, and to instead use a secure anonymous proxy or vpn. this is the only way to remain secure besides not being an idiot in the first place. run linux, use a vpn, no one knows who you are, or where you from if you know what your doing. run an "anonymizer" program, or whatever program your apparently trying to sell, and your asking to be arrested and raped in the butt.

my only real statement however is this...
your recommending a "security program", and you 1) don't know anything about computer security, and 2) you don't know anything about computer security, the pure stupidity and lack of intelligence is a danger to every member who takes your "advice"

sorry for acting like a jackoff, but the pure endangerment this member has created should call for a ban.

so in the feature, the lesson is know what the fuck your talking about before you risk someones life and liberty by your pure incompetence.

unless you review the code for the application your using, you don't have any clue what it does. you simply "think" what they claim it does.

x86 and windows xp are two very different requirement to run an application.

however, with linux and wine (emulator for windows/directx9) you can run hl2, counter strike, cs source, whatever. :woohoo:

so partition you hard drive, and make some room for linux, and dual boot for a while so you get the hang of linux, it has a very steep learning curve, but help is everywhere.

Not to mention linux is built with security as the main concern, meaning security components that you have to pay for due to strategic marketing tactics with windows (making money being Microsofts main concern) are built into linux. You can block entire government netblocks and addresses by placing a line similar to this in your /etc/hosts.deny file:
ALL: .mil .gov

you can also block IP addresses that don't resolve or don't resolve to their real names with the same file just to be extra secure. One of my favorite strategies under linux is running my own dns server with bind9 (known as a "named", a server that maps domain names to IP addresses) instead of using my ISP's default servers. This means I can't be tracked on the internet; there is no trail leading to the sites I've been to since the dns entries are pulled from cache locally. Combining this with an anonymous proxy is a great strategy to truly secure your existence online.

Which Linux to download? Theres seems to be alot FreeBSD, FedoraProject, College Linux, and RedHat to name a few...

Which would yall recommend?
