Doctors oppose legalizing marijuana in New York and three other states

Groups representing doctors in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Delaware released a rare joint statement Friday opposing the legalization of recreational marijuana in their states.
“As physician leaders, we agree, as one voice, that the legalization of recreational marijuana does not serve the best interests of our patients nor will it serve the best interest of our states,” the presidents of the four state medical societies said.
Lawmakers in all four states are considering legalizing weed.
“We have serious concerns about the lack of scientific evidence that supports recreational marijuana use by adults and young adults. Most importantly, not enough research has been done to prove marijuana is safe,” they said.
The doctors said legislators need to look at potential “significant harms” — driving while impaired and accidents, creating and worsening mental health issues and “negative impacts on developing minds.”
“The huge increase in teen vaping causes great concern and it is very possible that we will have a similar situation with legalized marijuana. We need to learn the lessons from history to ensure that any legalized marijuana product does not become the Big Tobacco of the 21st Century,” the statement read.
The statement was signed by Thomas Madejski, president of New York Medical Society, John Poole of the New Jersey Medical Society, Claudi Gruss of the Connecticut Medical Society and Andrew Dahlke of the Delaware Medical Society.
“States that are rushing towards legalization of recreational marijuana are ignoring how profit-driven corporations hooked generations of Americans on cigarettes and opioids, killing millions and straining public resources,” they said.
The doctors said they believe that cannabis should be studied further before it’s legalized.
“When we have the science, we can make qualified and quantified decisions about legalization. To date, ten states have legalized recreational marijuana. Let’s stop the tide now,” they said.

Of course they do...

Healthy people aint gonna pay their bills!

Now I'll go read the article.
Well that was quick.

Those folks only need to read whats already available and then go from there. They've obviously not done much research on the subject themselves!

Somebody send them the US Gov patent number on CBD use (Patent 6,630,507).
Get them W.B. O'Shaughnessy & Dr Tod Mikurias work!

You had me at people being healthier and it being a threat. This is the true threat, whether the doctors are aware of it or not. Cannabis users (on average), get sick less, see doctors less, use drastically fewer prescriptions, work more, bitch less (than alcohol and many Rx users) lol and generally tolerate life better all around.

This means fewer people in the waiting room, and lower profits every year. Same reason the pharmaceutical companies are running scared as well.

The downside is they kind of have a point, but only when people are using unclean cannabis, or cannabis with severely wrong terpene profiles for their brain chemistry. Recreational cannabis will slowly increase the quality and strains available, through a growing awareness of what cannabis really is.

Remember, these are primarily doctors who have never experienced clean cannabis. Their patients mostly have not either. Of course their opinion is going to be a bit jaded.

And to think that originally, the AMA argued AGAINST prohibition of cannabis, due to its usefulness and safety....

Ah yes, I think we've heard all this before. See here's the big problem... The reason there is such little scientific documentation on the risks/benefits of cannabis is because of prohibition. No university or medical clinic can do a comprehensive study without fear of legal penalty or losing funding.

Patients are also weary of the law and the risks for coming out in the open about their MJ use. Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome has been a recent scientific discovery because of MJ's legalization.

Why shouldn't we legalize? It needs to be studied more. Why don't we study it more? Because it's not legal to do so. Circular logic, you never reach an end. Just another ploy by big pharma and the paid off doctors to keep more of the same going.

It used to be that Doctors were the best of the best, our brightest minds - but those were the good old days and long past. Wiki'ing their average IQ's these days will give you a new interest in Homeopathy...

They are primarily machines, and a product of their manufacturing.

These are individuals who are heavily programmed to get their information from **only** approved sources. Their ability to work (licensing) depends on their conforming to societal rules. Do things the wrong way, and they yank your license.

Unless you agree, you will not get the degree.

I've found most general MDs to be drones. Some of the specialists I've spoken with are more open minded, and include non-approved sources in their research. Their 'practice' is still by the book though. I doubt you'll find many non drones in that group doctors.

Many of these doctors could not give a shit whether we suffer or not. There's only 1 motivation to these scumbags and I'm happy to cite the mofo's that I've seen publicly. Let their lawyers try approaching me on that. I double dog dare them.

As we get older we find out they care less and less about us and more and more about getting us out of the way after we pay them.

I will be litigating a case here. I cannot wait.

I always fucking LOVE when they say "We have concerns about the lack of scientific evidence proving cannabis's safety."

Yeah never mind the hundred+ years of consumption without a single documented fatality. But no evidence of it's safety right?

And it's really convenient to say you don't have the scientific evidence you need when you've made it illegal to do that science. Such a fucking circle jerk of money hungry douchebags.

The dumbest things I've heard came out of doctors more than anyone else, granted little of that was actually medical advice. The rest of the dumb things I have heard en masse come out of the NY government, lol. Screw them both, do your own research and be responsible for yourself.
