finally got the argentine saguaro into a pot,not really a saguaro (carnegia gigantica) but rather a stetsonia coyne (sp?) both are monotypic species meaning there is only one species in that group,i also have a couple of luchtenberigia pricipus (sp?) which is also monotypic..

probably going to get sick of looking at pics of this one cactus, but ive never really seen one of these blooming before in spite of having a half dozen scattered across the yard...
this one was salvaged from a landscape,i guess the new owners werent into the desertscape idea...their loss,my gain...

that one is a well scarred survivor of a cactus, took a once in a century freeze a few years ago that killed tons of cactus around here, probably in the 15-20 year old range considering the size....
i used to do everything i could to avoid the damn things, now i stop and identify each kind i see and get a little goofy when i spot one of the rarities...

im jealous,i bet you're in usda zone 10 for cold tolerance so you could plant just about anything in the ground and have it survive...im limited in many ways here by the brief winter cold,im risking a small saguaro in the ground this year, hope for another few mild winters for it to get used to the area....of course i will never see it mature since thats a 100 years away...

ok,i warned you,the claret cup cactus continues with its ultra slow motion fireworks show,so you're just going to have to put up with more pictures of it!

im really quite stunned with the durability of these flowers, the petals are very waxy and stiff, the plant naughty bits, the pistils and stamen and whatnot are also very well protected from moisture loss....thats just the desert for you,it seems so vast and impersonal when you look at it as a whole...it seems like nothing but sun blasted rock and sand and never a speck of shade in sight...but whenever you stop and really look at it closely theres always life...in abundance and profusion...and often startlingly lovely....

anyway, one of my favorite spots in the garden,a nice balance of plant textures along with the various rock sizes gives it that perfectly unnatural natural look i was striving for....of course you would never find these plants together in nature, not only geographically but in terms of elevation and life zones as well...

Beautiful 3rd pic LyryC. What a trippy plant. I draw stuff like that with colored markers when I used to trip on liquid acid and mushrooms and stuff. Waaaay back in the day.
That pic made my jaw tight like I was having a flashback. Nice!
