If you want to retain the maximum quantity of trichomes on your material, then fine trim over a screen just before smoking the bud, those resiny single bud leaves will dry and wrap around and protect the resin on the bud from touching other surfaces.
and believe it or not, 90% of commercial bud starts off being pretty damn good...but it's just due to poor handling resulting in 40% or more resin loss by the time the end user has it on his tray and it about to smoke it. It's the mauling, grabbing, throwing, dragging, hitting, banging, squashing, packing in and out of plastic bags along the way that does it!
