dang! gonna be below zero for low temps tonight, gotta plug in the battery blanket, it runs @ 80 watts and assures a fast start @ any temp up here. Nearly everyone has some sort of plug in for their cars, oil pan heaters (magnetic), block heaters, and radiator tank heaters (circulating) give you warmer oil or comfy interior temps quicker, but I prefer to just keep the battery in its happy operating range.

Diesel drivers face other challenges, buying the deep winter blend for one thing, and keeping their fuel tanks & fuel system heated enough to avoid gelling from the tank(s) thru the lines.

and then even though I drive an older sedan, I use straight Mobil1 synthetic oil so that cold weather starts see oil to the top end faster.

Landscape here last night looked like the Cosmos was running fluorescent shop lights out there. Everything was nicely lit, though not excessively bright. Made me look at the clock in the wee hours to see if it was morning, or what.

My first thought after that was, "Man, we could be back in the mountains, on 4-5 ft. of ice, jigging lake trout and burbot under the full moon, with relatively warm temps."

But we're not.... :^(

Was going to do an oil change on another vehicle today, but it was +5 on the porch this morning, and by the time it reached +30, it began snowing; even heavier now. We're now supposed to receive about 3" of snow by tomorrow morning, and I have a long-ish trip to take.

Lows tonight may be in the single digits above zero again.

Seems driving through snow on top of intermittent glaze is my aging traveler's curse..

It's this time of year when folks get heading down the highway, cooking right along at 65-75 mph on dry pavement, then enter a cut-bank or shaded north side of a hill that's been protected from direct sun and thaw, and find themselves on wet ice in the midst of a curve, with less control than they ought to have at those speeds.. Happens every year.

I'll be warily scanning the horizon for such events tomorrow. "Lord, please protect me from your exuberant drivers in possession of more horse-power than common sense.. Amen..."

That was me in 1982, 105 mph on a four lane going around a hill. It was pretty gruesome, the towing company took a photo and hung it behind their counter with the caption "This one lived".
If I had not ripped the seat out of the floor with my back the roof would have crushed me when it hit the main frame.
Lotsa things got broke, ow ow ow.

I still drive slower 35 years later.
