The difference in velocity between the m4/ar 15 carbine and an m16/ ar 15(yes I know the difference) is enough for me to want yhe longer barrel. Plus they balance so much better.

I was not saying that children should be seen and not heard.we are so backwards that children who have zero knowledge of the constitution, and it's importance to our freedoms. Children are dictating to the masses that they should make policy. Their is a reason you have to be 35 to be president. Their is a a reason you have to be an adult to vote, to own a firearm, to sign contracts, etc. Children do not have the maturity to make adult decisions. If you disagree hand a child your check book, and the bills for the month. Let's see how that turns out. I fore see bankruptcy . Children are children they have no place dictating what constitutional rights adults should have. Over 50 % of college think that speech they disagree with should be banned, as so called hate speech. Anytime we allow our rights to be infringed, we create a slippery slope. If you don't feel the second amendment has value, let's see how happy you are when the rest of the amendments are scraped.

I've got an AR15 with a Rock River Predator upper. 20 inch heavy stainless barrel with a bipod and a Nikon 1.5-6 on it. It has relatively no recoil and is my favorite woodchuck/coyote/critter setup.

Recently finished building an AR10 with a 20 inch barrel. .308 goodness. Flat Dark Earth keymod handguard, ambidextrous charging handle etc. etc. Didn't put a brake on it and flash hiders are a no-no in this state so I just silver soldered a thread protector on the end. I avoided the brake as I wanted to avoid as much brake associated noise as I could. The brake isnt necessary anyhow, the rifle is heavy enough. Put an old Bushnell 4x12 BDC scope on it that I had laying around. I was hitting soda cans at 300 yards the other afternoon with it fairly regularly. Havent had a chance to shoot at any greater range as of yet.

Shooting wise, noise wise & recoil wise.

The 3rd loudest firearm I've ever shared the range with was an AR15 with a 16 inch barrel and a muzzle brake that was very effective at sending sound sideways.

1st loudest, 30 cal Weatherby, next range over, separated by a berm about 15 feet high. Changing my targets, walking about 100 yards from the firing line. DAMN that was impressively loud, you almost need hearing protection even 100 yards way.

2nd loudest, 30 Win Mag, shooter was prone. Shooter was a retired Marine Sniper instructor, very helpful, answered a bunch of questions I had saved up. He was shooting on a concrete floor and the sound went sideways. DAMN, I wore my earmuffs and went and sat at the picnic bench and sorted ammo for a half hour.

Thumbs up

i am enjoying following this debate. it rapidly becomes evident who works from facts and common sense & who wants to deal with their ideas/emotions also. VTA, you and i have had our disagreements on here, but your logic & knowledge of the history involved in this are above reproach. i might have worded a few of your statements differently, but the gist of your arguments & grasp of the historical and legal aspects are very solid.

I'm grateful for the chance to talk about firearms on the forum.

I'm ambivalent about the BDC reticle. I like the Vortex Dead Hold BDC reticle. I don't yet like the Nikon BDC reticle.

Anything that covers up the field of view, I tend to not like. I had one Primary Arms scope that has a dot in the middle. It covers up a 6 inch circle at 100 yards and a 12 inch circle at 200 yards.

I actually designed a target around it, a big white diamond on a tan cardboard background. Then when it's aimed, I see a black dot in the center of a white background.

When I can afford it I'd like to try the Vortex or Nikon Mil-Dot reticles. Both are about $400.

I watched a video of a rifle barrel, played in slow motion but shot using high speed video. It shows the resonance in the barrel, like small waves going up and down the length of the barrel.

I understand the long skinny barrels can resonate more than the short fat ones. So you can often get better accuracy with a shorter barrel.

When I first got a 300 Winchester Short Mag, the recoil was a bit much. So I hose-clamped 5x 12 inch long inch diameter steel rods to it, the 5 pieces weighed 12 pound. That sure settled it down in terms of recoil, but of course screwed up the aim.

I've been looking at Pac Nor barrels, and realizing a barrel swap could be more involved if I go for the truly fat barrel. I think Pac Nor is 1.25 inches diameter at the base. I would have to cut away the receiver, which would make it an even more expensive project. For now that rifle just gives me a chance to experiment with different powders.

Thanks Hippy !

My grandfather gave me my first 22 when I was 8. Before I was able to shoot it, he made sure I knew everything about gun safety. Also grew up with LAPD in the house. Always had a 38 on top of the fridge and was taught how to use it, properly.

In this age of extreme gun grabbing. I thought this might clear somethings up.

Heritage Foundation: Eight Stubborn Facts Regarding Gun Violence in America

Heritage Foundation: Eight Stubborn Facts Regarding Gun Violence in America
by Cassandra Fairbanks

In the latest installment in the Heritage Foundation’s “Heritage Explains” series, the think-tank has provided eight stubborn facts that gun-grabbers continue to overlook as they tug on America’s heartstrings to coerce people into giving up their Second Amendment right.

Here are the eight inconvenient truths:

1. Violent crime is down and has been on the decline for decades

“In 1993, there were seven homicides by firearm for every 100,000 Americans, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By 2013, that figure had fallen by nearly half, to 3.6 — a total of 11,208 firearm homicides. The number of victims of crimes involving guns that did not result in death (such as robberies) declined even more precipitously, from 725 per 100,000 people in 1993 to 175 in 2013,” the Washington Post reports.

2. The biggest safety concerns with guns are suicides and illegally owned handguns, not mass shootings

School shootings have killed 41 people in the U.S. since 2013, based on a Time analysis. Meanwhile, 63% of the 33,636 deaths due to “injury by firearms” in the US were suicides.

3. A small number of factors significantly increase the likelihood that a person will be a victim of a gun-related homicide.

According to the Crime Prevention Research Center, over 50 percent of murders occur in 2 percent of the nation’s 3,142 counties, so where you live is an important factor.

If you are in a gang or involved with drugs, you are also more likely to become a victim of gun violence. It is estimated that 15-33% of shooting victims are linked with gang and drug activity.

4. Gun-related murders are carried out by a predictable pool of people

According to the PEW Research Center, Americans living closer to cities, either in the suburbs (19%) or in urban areas (28%), are more likely to say gun violence is a big problem near them. Among gun owners, rural residents are much less likely to see gun violence as a problem in their community; just 5% say this is a very big problem while 16% of suburban gun owners say the same.

Gun violence is most common in poor urban areas and frequently associated with gang violence, often involving male juveniles or young adult males.

CNS News adds that almost all mass public shooters have extensive histories of mental health issues (whether delusional/psychiatric or depression/anger), disturbing behaviors, or interpersonal violence.

5. Higher rates of gun ownership are not associated with higher rates of violent crime

The rate of gun ownership is significantly higher in rural areas than in urban areas, but urban areas experience drastically more gun violence.

“Switzerland and Israel have much higher gun ownership rates than the United States but experience far fewer homicides and have much lower violent crime rates than many European nations with strict gun control laws,” CNS News notes.

6. There is no clear relationship between strict gun control legislation and homicide or violent crime rates.

States with relaxed gun control laws like New Hampshire, Vermont, Idaho, and Oregon, have some of the lowest homicide rates. States with more extreme gun control laws, such as Maryland and Illinois have the highest murder rates.

7. Legally owned firearms are used for lawful purposes more often than they are used to commit crimes or suicide.

According to a report from the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, firearms are used defensively hundreds of thousands of times every year, drastically more than they are used for murder or suicide.

8. Concealed carry permit holders are not the problem, but they may be part of the solution.

“As a group, concealed carry permit holders are some of the most law-abiding people in the United States. The rate at which they commit crimes generally and firearm crimes specifically is between one-sixth and one-tenth of that recorded for police officers, who are themselves committing crimes at a fraction of the rate of the general population,” CNS reports.

Brilliant information, not stuff you see on the MSM very often.

I was taught gun safety and how to shoot at the age of 5. Grew up around firearms and the most important thing was always safety. I'm an adult now and the satisfaction that comes from being able to provide food and safety to my family- without relying on police or the grocery store - is a wonderful feeling. I've never lived in an area where gun violence was an issue but always been surrounded by gun owners. Lived in a lot of rural areas, nobody messes with peoples' property because you know everyone is armed.

Seems to me that instead of messing around with constitutional rights, these communities where gun violence is a problem should maybe just consider getting their shit together and acting like civilized people??? What a profound thought right....
