Twist is not affected by barrel length.
Twist & barrel length interact to affect how flat shooting & stable a particular bullet is.

I think a lot of 223/.556 barrels and 308 barrels are 'over-twisted'. Too fast a twist for 99.99% of the bullets that will be shot using that firearm. Just a quirk of the industry.

As far as the shooters, I'm just describing the profile - of their firearm - that comes out in the news accounts.

1:7 twist is good for an 85 grain bullet in 223/.556. But very few people with the 16 inch 223 are shooting 85 grain bullets. Most of them are shooting 55 or 62 grain.

In 308 caliber, Savage makes an almost great rifle, the 12FV among others, with a 1:10 twist. They call it their varmint series, with a 26 inch barrel.

Only thing is, 1:10 is good for a 220 grain 308 bullet. Who shoots that with a 308 ? 220 grain 30 cal is for magnum caliber rifles - or the subsonic shooter.

1:14 is good for up to 168 grain; the heaviest 308 bullet I shoot is the 155 grain Palma (BC a little over .5).

Other things I notice about the mass shooters -
* none of them re-load. Or if they do, it's not mentioned when it's a detail that would seem to apply.
* most of them are skinny young guys who don't have any kind of regular gym routine.

The proper way to figure twist is : 150 divided by the length of the bullet in calibers.

A .30 caliber 180 grain spitzer is 1.35 i ches long.
1.35/30=4.5 calibers. 150/4.5=33.333 calibers x the diameter of the bullet. Which for a 30-06 is 33.3x.3=9.99 or practically a 1:10 twist for a 30-06 no matter what the bullet weight.

Mitch McConnell reminds me of the guy from Hannibal.

(I googled and it seems someone else already saw the resemblance)

Though quick twists have been used experimentally to stablilize .226 barnes wild cat zt 1:5.5" and alsoa heavy one the 6.5 barnes at 200 grains with the same twist.

Some like the .257 condor used a 1:7 twist to try to stabilize a 160 grain bullet. Very dlow machine gun powger was used to hold pressures down, but the pressure on the bullet jacket due to rapid spinning is immense. Most rounds blowing up on the hide of deet and antelope.

My point being a 1:10 twist is standard on most 30 calibet sporting rifles using hunting weight bullets.

I have hornady manuals yhat use diffetent twist equations, but they still come out to 1:10 on my ol girl the 06'. Best round there is imo, arguably of course.

I make bull with no problem at 1200 yards. Want to tslk calibers and twist some more? I love it all
I can even give you a wind drift per mph that is easy to memorize and use in the field.

May I suggest coconuts as a long range target. Trust me.

Back to America...Thomas Sowell is one of the great Americans that get it. I highly recommend reading up...

Mitch is the prime example of what is wrong with the GOP Senate and the need for term limits. Put Cotton, Lee or Paul up there...when President Trump wins reelection, they will keep him grounded....

Violence against minorities has increased over 45% in the past year.
Charlottesville looked like 1950 recently.
The republican party has been eviscerated.
That is not the work of liberals.
For Koch's sake, don't touch that dial.
