SkyHighLer's insatiable curiosity about pot and hash oil is a consistent source of quality info for the rest of us, wtg dude! Thanks for the report. Whatever the hell that Lil Dragon was, it looks like it was worth the price, thats was some dank stuff. Sage n Sour put up big numbers too and the GG4 didn't get ground looks like. Your stash must be pretty awesome with all that in it is all I can say and that it looks like from your yield numbers that the quality of the input material makes a big difference on the output volume. From your description it sounds like the rest of the operation was somewhat consistent and bud quality is the main variable in what you're working with. Those cash numbers just make it look like Sour D is cheap or at least a hell of a deal. Man between the Sour D per $ cost and the high numbers on the Sage n Sour cross really helps to reiterate what an asskicker Sour D is. Hermie power! |

Most of the other number work out. On another note. I WILL Not buy nugs if the sample doesnt come out about 25% or above. If im running someones elses shit....i dont care. But if its nugs im buying to run for concentrates....I will test it....if it comes out above 25%. Im up for purchase....otherwise lets negotiate. I run a number of closed loops from 1oz to 2.5lbs with and without dewaxing columns. will only dewax if its necessary. My Highest is 28% with Goji OG and Cheese but ive gotten 25%+ from a ton of strains.

I'm happy with a 20% return as long as I didn't pay top shelf pricing for the nuggs. Imo with top shelf nuggs you should be getting around 25% return or better unless the nuggs were purchased for a limited availability exotic terpene profile. Complete agreement that dewaxing is unnecessary with decent nuggs. I also agree that your own test runs are more trustworthy than lab test results.

I routinely get in the 23-25% range using really high quality cured flowers and -50C ethanol extraction. I discovered the secret to squeezing the last little bit yield comes down to processing technique and filtering. I think that pulverizing material is absolutely key to allow the alcohol to get at all material equally. I used to make dry ice (or ln2) hash as an intermediate step, which pulverized material, but I found that this step causes slight lose in yield as material sticks to screens ect..
My current solution uses a very heavy Cuisinart 6L stainless pot that sits on a 10lb block of dry ice inside a thick wall medical transport cooler. The pan has a 1/2" bottom plate that is very good at heat transfer. I place 200 gram of flowers inside pan and cover for 1 hour. Temps are in -70C range. I then remove cover and with a stainless pestle, I grind (crush) flowers into smaller chucks. This take 3-4 minutes. I then recover for 30-45 minutes and do another grinding with pestle, but this time it finishes as keif and fine powder. After this, flower volume is ~ 1/3 of previous (more flower can be added and process repeated). The logic is that material never leaves the pan (until filtering) so there is no yield lose. I recover pot for another 15-20 minutes and then pour in -50C ethanol that has been chilling a separate cooler with dry ice. Because I am extracting at such cold temps, I leave the ethanol to soak for at least 30-40 minutes. After soaking, the most important aspect of this entire process is filtering. You CAN NOT use coffee filters with this finely ground material, it will clog and you will lose a ton of yield. I use a glass buchner funnel with #1 whatman filters connected to cold trap -> Tee with valve for vent/throttle -> Cheap HVAC vacuum pump. The vent/throttle is important because you need the ability to reduce vacuum level during begining of process to not suck liquid into vacuum return line. After a few minutes, the filter begins to clog and I have the ball valve closed about 95%. For the last 5-10 mintutes, I typically have the valve closed and the vacuum level at max. Depending on the volume, it typically takes 20-30 minutes to filter 2L of ethanol. So, the flower material is exposed to etoh for about an hour total. The material goes in the filter about -70C and ends up about -30C by the time the filtering is finished. I like this drift because I think it could unlock compounds that are frozen at -70C. The real trick of this filtering process to maximize yield is to use new virgin (pure) -50C ethanol after all the material (and extract laden etoh) has been filtered. There is still alcohol on material that contains cannabinoids. So, by pouring fresh etoh into funnel you are diluting alcohol mixture and catching remaining good stuff. Repeat this process of adding additional etoh until the funnel only drips crystal clear into your boiling flask receiver. |
