Poll: 3 out of 5 New Mexico residents support legalizing marijuana

Majority of New Mexico residents favor recreational marijuana.

Three out of five New Mexico residents say they support legalizing recreational marijuana, according to poll results released Thursday by Research & Polling Inc.
The Albuquerque-based pollsters surveyed 406 New Mexico residents ages 21 and older and found 61 percent of residents support legalizing and taxing recreational marijuana sales, while just 28 percent oppose such moves, as reported by the Associated Press.
Drug Policy Alliance commissioned the poll, which was conducted by telephone between Jan. 8 – 13 and surveyed residents about marijuana legalization in a broad sense, not about any specific bill proposal.
Per the Associated Press:
“We just said straight up, ‘Do you support or oppose a bill that would legalize, regulate and tax marijuana sales for adult use in New Mexico?’” said pollster Brian Sanderoff, president of Research & Polling.
Support for legalization was strongest among males, Hispanics, Democratic and independent voters and the 35 and under crowd. Support was somewhat weaker among Republican voters, with 43 percent in favor of legalizing and taxing recreational marijuana.
When residents were told that tax revenue generated by recreational marijuana sales would go toward health care and substance-abuse programs, support for legalization jumped to 69 percent.
New Mexico’s 2016 legislative session convened Jan. 19, and three proposals to legalize recreational marijuana are already pending, according to Marijuana Policy Project.
The state is among 23 that have already legalized marijuana for medical purposes, although New Mexico has not yet decriminalized marijuana possession across the state.

It'll come, just not now. Current gov'nah, Susana Martinez is former DA, Republican. Will have to wait until she's out of there!!!! Two more years....like a root canal with no sedative/anesthesia.
