Nation's Drug Czar says pot growers in norcal are dangerous terrorists

from NORML:

Colleagues,

For those who may not have seen this...

First it was that marijuana smokers helped fund terrorists. Now the
rhetoric from the Bush administration is that marijuana consumers ARE
terrorists who also "WOULDN'T HESITATE" to help smuggle Al Queda cells into
the US for the purpose of causing more Sept. 11-like attacks! Wow, and here
I thought all pot smokers were supposed to be a-motivated.

Nice way to piggyback on Chertoff's scare-mongeroing earlier this week
Walters. You've achieved a new low, as has the paper that blindly printed
this crap.

Folks may wish to visit the url below to bring up the full text and also
join the very lively discussion board surrounding this story. LTEs
certainly are also in order.

Regards,

Drug czar gives warning

Federal official calls marijuana growers dangerous terrorists

By Dylan Darling (Contact)
Friday, July 13, 2007

The news: The nation's drug czar says pot garden growers in the north
state are terrorists.

What's next: Anti-drug agencies plan to continue the blitz on gardens
next week.

OPERATION: ALESIA

The nation's top anti-drug official said people need to overcome
their "reefer blindness" and see that illicit marijuana gardens are a
terrorist threat to the public's health and safety, as well as to the
environment.
John P. Walters, President Bush's drug czar, said the people
who plant and tend the gardens are terrorists who wouldn't hesitate
to help other terrorists get into the country with the aim of causing
mass casualties. Walters made the comments at a Thursday press
conference that provided an update on the "Operation Alesia"
marijuana-eradication effort.
"Don't buy drugs. They fund violence and terror," he said.
After touring gardens raided this week in Shasta County,
Walters said the officers who are destroying the gardens are
performing hard, dangerous work in rough terrain. He said growers
have been known to have weapons, including assault rifles.
"These people are armed; they're dangerous," he said. He
called them "violent criminal terrorists."
Walters, whose official title is director of the White House
Office of National Drug Control Policy, said too many people write
off marijuana as harmless. "We have kind of a reefer blindness,' " he
said.
No arrests have been made so far in the four days of raids,
the opening leg of what Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko has
promised will be at least two straight weeks of daily raids.
He said suspects have been hard to find because their familiarity
with their terrain makes it easy for them to flee quickly.
Although crews doing the raids are using Black Hawk and other
helicopters to drop in on some of the gardens, Bosenko said they
don't want to give the growers any warning of a raid.
"We try to move in under stealth," he said.
As of Thursday morning, Operation Alesia raids had resulted in the
yanking of 68,237 young marijuana plants from public lands in Shasta
County. Raids already have been conducted in Whiskeytown National
Recreation Area, as well as on land managed by the U.S. Forest
Service north of Lake Shasta and other public land near Manton.
The operation is being led by the sheriff's office and has involved
17 agencies, including the California National Guard and the U.S.
Drug Enforcement Administration. It's believed to be the largest
campaign of its kind in the state, Bosenko said.
The operation is named after the last major battle between the Roman
Empire and the Gauls in 52 B.C. That battle was won by the Romans.
With the blitz of marijuana gardens around Shasta County, Bosenko
said officials hope to not only get rid of the pot, but also win back
the land for the public that owns it.
"These organizations are destroying our lands and wildlife," he said.
Bernie Weingardt, regional forester for the Forest Service's Pacific
Southwest Region, said the 28,000 acres believed to house illegal
marijuana grows on national forest land throughout the state would
cost more than $300 million to
revive.
"These lands must be cleaned and restored," he said.
His estimate is based on a National Park Service study that found it
costs $11,000 per acre to pull the plants, clear irrigation systems,
reshape any terracing and replant native vegetation, said Mike Odle,
Forest Service spokesman.
While Walters didn't give specific goals for Operation Alesia, he
said anti-drug agencies aim to cripple the organized crime groups
that he said are behind the marijuana cultivation.
"This business we intend to put into recession, depression and put
its leaders into jail," Walters said.

Bush's Drug Czar Visits Redding
Thursday Jul 12, 2007

President Bush’s drug czar was in the North State today helping
inaugurate the new multi-agency marijuana eradication team and
getting first-hand experience with their raiding technique. Operation
Alesia is in the national spotlight and could become the model for
future marijuana-eradication operations.

The director of national drug control policy, John Walters, flew in
from Washington DC to spend the day in Shasta County. He is also
known as President Bush’s drug czar. Director Walters then ventured
into the Shasta-Trinity National Forest Thursday morning to take part
in the eradication process of an illegal marijuana cultivation site.

He will take what he learns from his experiences with Operation
Alesia straight back to the White House. Alesia, a multi-agency
effort in Shasta County could break ground for future marijuana
eradication operations.

The California National Guard is one of seventeen local, state, and
federal agencies that compose Operation Alesia. With all the manpower
and resources put into fighting illegal marijuana grown on public
lands, the question on everyone’s mind is as to whether or not it is
worth it.

“All these raids do is drive producers further into our national
parks and they keep the price up so they have an incentive to do it,”
said Bruce Mirken, representative of the Marijuana Policy Project,
the largest marijuana reform organization in the country. He strongly
disagrees with these anti-marijuana drug operations.

He pointed out that the number of marijuana plants seized in the last
decade has gone up 1200% and that the government should think of
other ways to deter these marijuana growers from crossing the border.
“The only way to protect public is to have marijuana cultivation be
somewhere it’s controlled, regulated, and under legal jurisdiction,”
Mirken said, “If we regulated marijuana like we do wine and beer,
nobody would have a reason to go into national parks.”

Director Walters disagrees and says the safety of the public comes
first and that the White House will continue to do what it takes to
rid illegal marijuana gardens from the country. “We don’t have public
policies that encourage disease,” Walters reasoned, “Even self-
inflicted disease. We try to cure people, we try to avoid infection,
and we try to prevent them from being unduly exposed to the
substances that make them sick.”

Operation Alesia began earlier this week. They have already managed
to seize more than 68,000 plants with a street value of $272 million
dollars.

my question for the hard core neo-cons....is god wrong for putting the plant on our planet? is it our job to decide what plants stay or go? they are messing with nature and forcing innocent people to behave as criminals....truly disgusting.

Bad news, love. It's not just neocons. I was reading a mmj story not too long ago (about a month) and one of the several dems who voted against it (uggh she was a twit) said "there must be some kind of medication available." :bashhead:

wow. i didn't realize i was a terrorist. thanks for letting us know who we are, mr. walters. funny thing tho, i ain't never shot nobody and wasn't planning to any time soon, i pray.

they can get my guns just as soon as they kill me. i may not think myself a terrorist, but i do think myself an upstanding citizen of the United States of America with a vested interest in the future of my home country's democracy and values (what's left?), hence armed. hence educated and informed and well read. fuck you mr. walters. kiss my ass with your lying, walters. you wouldn't know the truth if it hit you like a ton of bricks. fear the feds? fear those goons? fuck that, amen.

reefer blindness? what the hell does that even mean? i know what the un-drugged eye is, and i think that's what these politicos got. that and a healthy dose of absolute power, like a little kid with bad parents. fucking govt. bastards, lying as usual.

lets say i sell a bag of weed to some kid for some change. why the hell would i give it to terrorists when i have gas and food and a mortgage to pay? sorry mr. walters, your bullshit doesn't hold water. i'm going to go through this news item piece by piece. lets see what we find.

"Don't buy drugs. They fund violence and terror" - Walters

yeah. already taken care of. i don't hurt people. i wish i could say the same for the legitimized gangbangers who run our country. i wish. why is he lying?

"the officers who are destroying the gardens are performing hard, dangerous work in rough terrain. He said growers have been known to have weapons, including assault rifles." These people are armed; they're dangerous," he said. He called them "violent criminal terrorists."

yeah dude. so are my buddies who run their own landscaping companies. hard, dangerous work in difficult terrain. how is this jane eradication effort any different from what your average working American experiences day to day? it isn't any different. don't talk to me about the "work" they're doing. they're getting paid by the biggest and most powerful gang on the planet to eradicate a harmless plant. also, so far as i'm concerned, i'd like to see all of my fellow citizens "armed and dangerous." for what it's worth.

"He said suspects have been hard to find because their familiarity with their terrain makes it easy for them to flee quickly."

good for them for getting away. i salute those men.

"These lands must be cleaned and restored," he said. His estimate is based on a National Park Service study that found it costs $11,000 per acre to pull the plants, clear irrigation systems, reshape any terracing and replant native vegetation, said Mike Odle, Forest Service spokesman."

we have monstrous, monolithic corporations in this country whose specialty is raping the fuck out of our land for whatever reasons are profitable, followed by adroit manipulation of the law of the land so as to escape their clean-up responsibilities, and you're telling me my fucking government is spending money to "clean up" outdoor MJ farms? did i get that right? hypocrite. liar. i hope the gunes are reading this right now: your bosses are a bunch of liars, and saying it's your job doesn't fucking make it right. nothing needs cleaned or restored after planting a fucking weed plant in the ground. and "natural" vegitation will grow over everything all by itself, so why the fuck are they planting new stuff? is somebody's brother in landscaping and got the contract hook-up or what? this shit isn't making any sense at all.

"While Walters didn't give specific goals for Operation Alesia, he said anti-drug agencies aim to cripple the organized crime groups that he said are behind the marijuana cultivation. "This business we intend to put into recession, depression and put its leaders into jail," Walters said.

two words, bitch walters. good luck.

“We don’t have public policies that encourage disease,” Walters reasoned, “Even self-inflicted disease. We try to cure people, we try to avoid infection,
and we try to prevent them from being unduly exposed to the substances that make them sick.”

sure we don't. more lies from our friends at the government. remember what i was saying about those monstrous corporations that rape our land and our health and break our spirits behind their monolithic walls? you think that shit's good for people? i don't. no public healthcare, and you want to talk to me about public health? half my friends got shit wrong with them they can't take care of because they're busy working shitty jobs for bosses they'll never see, bosses bent on one thing and one thing only: transfering as much wealth as they can as high up as it will legally go. and you want to talk about public health, walters? fuck you dude. that's all i got to say. i'll smoke my weed until the day i die just to spite you and your gunes.

Hello all,

RElax, this is just the right wing propaganda being spewd jin conjunction with the regular CAMP program. Its design is to assure the extreme right wingers that thier tax dollors are being spent effectively and purposefully.

Just as a sidenote, there are grow ops in Norcal that are indeed distructive... there can be no dispute that the Mexican cartels are operating in California.

It is this association of the cartels with terrorists is the conclusion Walters is trying to shove down the conservative right wingers throats that by extension all outdoor guarilla growers are terrorists.

Read between the rhetoric to understand what is being said and why. IMHO.

Relax...

Right on 70's!!!! That's what i said after i saw the 1st anti-pot comercial that was played after 9-11. It showed the $ going from the consumer to the dealer to the supplier and then to some middle eastern sheet waring dude. Then they made the statement "if you buy marijuana you are contributing to terrorism....."
So i grow my own.

I have never helped nor will ever support some terrorist activities including the US terrorist activities that it has done as it forced its presence in multiple countries across the globe. I would never think about helping any group kill people as much as i would like to see some of the current polititions drop dead from priopism due to their excessive use of viagra, or via an over dose of some pharm med. they have been prescribed or shot by their friend while hunting for snipe.

This is a whoreable article and i mean he is a whole able to spout prolific lies for $ in his pocket and the demonization of your average pot growing citizen.
