RDWC and a 55 gallon barrel

I was thinking about having a 6 bucket RDWC with a 55 gallon barrel. Is it possible to run a RDWC with a 55 gallon barrel as the reservoir?

the rule of water

the rule of water

it always seeks it's own level..a 55 gallon res can be used, but since the system drains at the level of the bottom of the bucket, you will need to consider the size, shape and placement of your res. My res has an average of 8-10 inches of water in it

you could easily do wt with a std 55 gallon drum if the majority of the drum was lower then the rdwc bucket.

I'm changing my res design next go round..wider and deeper, but not taller..I figure i have ten gallons in a 18 gallon rm tub..too small for my setup.

You would have to burry the 55 gallon drum to where when the drum is full that line is the same height as your buckets full.

If you can lay it on its side it might work ok, Gravity is a bitch and always wins. The water level will be equal dammit.

You can do it by using the returns to set water height in the buckets. the return to the res can as close to the floor as they can go.

Do you have any suggestions that are wider and deeper and have a large quantity of water? I am looking for something in the 50-60 gallon range.

What about this? Would this work? http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/RUBBERMAID-Stock-Tank-1MDB7?cm_mmc=GoogleBase-_-Material%20Handling-_-Storage-_-1MDB7&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=1MDB7http://************/4pw448b

Stock tubs are available in 50, 75, and 100 gallons through farm supply outlets. I use 30 and 55 gal barrels, but as the ocean in my tidal systems, so height isn't a factor.

I used a 44gal Brute trash can on two cinder blocks. This fed my controller bucket which was on a float valve. I could mix 40gal of nutes and leave the plants for a week.

But with out a float valve and controller bucket you'd have to elevate the plants or bury the 55gal as to prevent overflow.

massive overkill on the pump

a recirculating dwc was designed to provide convenience with ease of water change outs and water cooling. the rez doesn't need to have a huge capacity. If plumbed properly you could do without a rez altogether.

Nothing for nothing but that doesn't look much different than the NON-SUBMERSIBLE 650gal per hour pump available form harbor freight for under $50.

The pump looks fine but way too pricey.

That is what I wanted to hear. I'll need to find something cheaper, like the one you suggested.
