Chunky perlite is probably better, but way too spendy.
I have coco mixed in my perlite. I started out with plain Botanicaire coco, the 12k block and one of the big bags of loose botanicaire. Now I've gor bcuzz in there too.
I had some mixed with perlite, so I could check it out, and eventually they got mixed, so I said OK, and got a big bag of perlite and made it all 50/50.
Works great. Good for bottom watering also.
