nutrients help.

hello people of icmag.

have plenty of soil grows under my belt but not much hydro other then aero cloners and seeing others systems. i use jacks classic blossom, jacks all purpose, cal mag, and GH 3 step flora series. i have never had a problem with any of them.

i have the gh because i was going to go hydro once then didnt. i have used it in my soil grows and actually like it and am familiar with gh feeding schedule.

anyway i plan on going hydro some time soon and need some help on what nutes to buy.

nutrient necessities:
1. be able to use in all systems.
2. easy to follow feed schedule.
3. lower cost.

current plan is:

mother- in a ebb and flow/recycling bucket system. when the mom get big enough il flower her in the same system. a big old tree.

clones- aeroponic storage container. any veg growth will probably done in the aero system. no more then 2-3.

flower- plan on doing a vertical pvc nutrient film technique/kinda deep water culture. the system will be similar to heath robinson's vertical and the many copy cats.

iv looked into gh 3 step and jacks hydro. jacks hydro sounds ok but i dont know a feeding schedule and there isnt a lot of info on jacks hydro.

WHAT KIND OF NUTRIENTS SHOULD DO YOU RECOMMEND AND WHY?

So what type of hydro we talking about I run a coco hydro mix and use the recipe below. If straight hydro I know people love good ol lucasformula.

GH is fine if not my pref.

6ml micro per gal
9ml bloom per gal

1.2 ec for me

will back off to 1.0ec if they start showing their getting too much

toss the green grow bottle in the trash and welcome to the simple life.

Simplicity....the ratios being on point .....ph friendly w/ro water I use it with tap....doesnt hurt the pockets lol

Alot of people use 6/9 and maxibloom

6/9 you get a little more control in flowering cause you can cut the micro out and is easier to mix

maxibloom is a one step feed regime KISS method youll find the thread on here too

But I use floramicro and bloom 6/9 love it

Keep It Stoner Simpler

thanks for the info. i have heard of lucas formula. il look into KISS. as for your question i was thinking of putting the aero clones strait into hydroton neti pots for the vertical unit.

if i use hydroton as a media is that a true hydro system?

Maxibloom sounds perfect. i like how its one step powder. i dont mind if i had to through in a little cal mag. im reading that most people are using coco medium though. would it still work with hydroton? im not set on hydroton yet. i just want a medium that is cheap and works well. preferibly something thats not going to change the the ph. i dont have hydro stores near where i live so i have i have to order supplies or go to a home depot/hardware store.

know of any mediums cheap and easy to get hands on at hardware store? would lava rock work? i wold rather be able to buy locally instead of order. if i could reuse the medium that would be great too.

in the vertical system im talking about the oversize pump will agitate the water creating oxygen and run water through the recycled system. the pvc system will retain a few inches of water incase power out/pump problems, then over flow down to next level to film continuously until reservoir and repeat. i was hoping that the hydroton would keep roots wet too. pump would run 24/7.

i havnt tested the water yet in the new place but it is on a well and il probably have to get a r/o system. il know the ppm soon.

sorry for the delay message. i forget to send it yesterday. did give me a little time to research though.

The truth is any quality nutrient for our industry is going to a good job at a reasonable strength such as donaj3 said. 1.0 to 1.2ec has proven to grow excellent product at the highest yields ive seen personally and on the net. use the right ph with just base quality nutrients, and learn to dial in the environment are the most critical things anyone can do.

Ok I took another look at ur first post and it looks like u already have gh 3 part. I had great success using just micro and bloom at a ratio of 1 part micro to 2 parts bloom at an ec of 1 to 1.2. if I remember right its about 5-6 ml micro and 10-12 ml bloom per gallon.

So ur doing a flooded tube vert huh. I ran one of those a couple of times before I shut it down to reduce plant numbers. that thing is a great system that can produce some huge yields. If u need any help, or ideas, let me know.

ya thats the plan. im sure il def be asking for some assistance then. iv seen these units but never talked to anyone personally who ran one. do you remember your unit size, res size, pump size, and lighting by any chance?

iv just started to come up with ideas for it and just got the place for it last last week. any info would be appreciated. sizes, problems, and such.

currently debating 1 or 2 stacked bare bulb 600hps. not sure if im going to need a cooltube. i dont want to but feel like i might have too in the warm season. sealings are only 7 ft so dont know if it would be better to run two small units with 1 600w each or one unit with 2 stacked. what u think?

i was sketchy about using gh 3part on soil but i did some reading into it and people have ok results. i actually prefer it over jacks classics. i think jacks runs a little hot even at half measure compared to gh3.

soil was:
3 part plain potting mix
1 part peat moss
1 part perlite
1 part vermiculite

it held a little more water then i wanted but didnt have a problem with root rot. dont want fungus gnats anywhere near a mix like that though. got a few gnats somehow so i put 1" sand on top and it helped with the gnats but made the soil hold too much water after that. gh3 worked great in that soil with some amnesia haze in some diy cloth pots.

in the past i had prolems with my tap water making my ph a little high. im not sure of this but the gh3 worked as if it had a ph buffer in it. never had a problem with the tap water after gh3 though

I copied heaths specs almost exactly. inside diameter was 48". I had 2" less space and ended up with 18 sites per level while heath had like 20 sites per level. So 4 levels for a total of 72 sites. I started with 1 600 but had another and chose to use it half way through. There is a big advantage to stacking bulbs with the overlapping lights. But u could really benefit from one more level if u use 2 600's. Its still worth it if u cant add the other level. 7' ceilings is what I had to work with as well. If u use the 5th level u aren't gonna have much room to enter the middle of the system.

No cool tubes. Just use a exhaust fan that can extract the room air twice per minute with a small 8" Honeywell fan blowing on slow straight up at the bulbs and exhaust out the top of the system.

Pump size is 1000gph. Put a T on the feed line in the reservoir and a valve. Then u have control over ur flow rate and u have free oxygenation of the res. by water fall effect and the bypass valve.

Res size is an interesting question as I started out with a small 14 gal tote like heath used. When I had a power outage enough water came out to run over the res, so I switched to a 32 gallon trash can.

Cut ur damns small to only hold an inch or so of water. If they are too big, u will run water right out of the net cups, especially when the roots develop.

Take 3 times the amount of clones u will need and use only the best. Its best if u can monocrop to manage canopy better. don't veg too long at all. Don't cut the holes for the plants at angles, the plant will naturally bend towards the light. otherwise water will spill out or the plant will want to fall out when it gets bigger.
Im sure I will think of some more stuff for u later.

Are u gonna do a thread on this. the vert section would be a good place to put it or ask questions. I don't see anyone doing one over there but like me there might be some guys with experience with them.

Nailed it! Thank you. That was just what I was looking for. I would love to do a thread but the numbers scare me. I was thinking about documenting and making a thread when all said and done. The only thing Iv put on here was a ongoing micro. Didn't put a lot of time into it. Feel like I have to return the favor and make a thread though.

What size PVC did u use? I can't find heaths
thread with pics anymore so all info is appreciated.

So the pipe is 4" sd (sewer and drain). I feel u on plant numbers and such. So I respect that, its up to u, but I would love to see it if u chose to, and will be there to help u along if needed.

Heaths thread is on riu, don't know if pics are there anymore cause I haven't looked in a long time, I will check it out. Don't know what country ur in but if its usa then u will probably have access to the light green pipe. If ur euro like heath then I think he said wicks is the hardware store where he got his stuff. the fittings are another topic of debate. Are u going to use the push fittings with the rubber seals? they are pricey but make it somewhat easier to adjust, level, and turn ur damns. They are a bit of a pia to put together. I used dish soap as a lube, but man it took me a lot of water washing through to get the suds out. I would recommend trying the pipe lube that is sold for that purpose.

Ah! that's sad, the pics aren't there anymore, I guess all good things come to an end I guess. but the parts list and details are still there. Anything else u need I can prob help u with.

for sure. 4" eh? i was thinking of doing 6" but if 4" is big enough i don't see why not 4". you didnt have problems with roots filling the pipe? what size neti pot did u use in 4" iv got some 3" at home and their pretty small. did plants ever fall over or do roots lock that shit down?

i was going to have a square frame on floor and ceiling then a octagon inside that. exterior frame is lets say 5' by 5' and 7' tall. i was thinking of wrapping panda plastic around 3 walls of the frame, ceiling to floor, and running two zippers on 4th wall so it would be a tent with one wall that could open. have the res outside of tent. so the tent would be 175 cubic feet.

iv got to run 10' of ducting and a filter. do you think a 500 cfm or a 720 cfm fan/filter would keep the two bare 600w cool?

i guess what im trying to figure out is would it be better to have a tent inside a room thats 175 cubic feet with a 720 cfm or a larger 490 cubic foot room with the 720 cfm fan? is it better to move more air through a smaller tent or have less air moved through a bigger room? is it the space around the vertical unit that keeps it cool or the the air moving through it? hope you get what im trying to ask.

i ask cause i would need like x4 720 cfm fans to pull the air out of the room twice a min or i can have the tent with x1 720 and move more air through the less than half the space.

once again thank you for the advice. iv already asked so many questions. i just hate to put in so much work and learn from all the mistakes when someone else has gone through it all.

i know how to give rep on a thread/post you made but is there anyway i can give you rep for all this recent help?

Don't be afraid to ask away, I enjoy helping where I can.

When u get to fifty posts u can tap on the white scales in the bottom left corner of posts and give rep with a personal note that only they can see, I think. Im somewhat new to the site too. U can edit when u get to 50 posts as well. its easy if u want just go through some threads saying hi or what u like about a post or pic.

no worries. ur welcome.
