McDonalds is a million times more dangerous than Ebola, and kills millions around the world, and they continue to serve and serve and serve.

What fucking media do you use - Martian?

By the way, the 1918 flu epidemic killed 50,000,000 people. That was prior to airplane travel for the masses or any other type of quick transportation. We've had nearly 100 years to figure out how to deal with the flu and we are just starting with this crap.

I read CNN and BBC and believe every word they write...lol

And what is the difference where I'm from, and where I live watts?

Isn't truth more important than nationality? Or are you exceptional, since you were born in America?

I bet you 1000 dollars that you'd rather eat McDonalds than get ebola...

lets be honest people, McDonalds' food is not killing millions around the world, wtf is that bs?

obviously I rather make my own hamburgers than spend money on McDonalds, but comparing their food to ebola? please...

you know, Americans did go to the moon btw lol...

You don't quarantine "sick" individuals - you quarantine before they get sick and then make sure that they do not develop the sickness. The screening is largely ineffectual (Duncan passed his "screening") because of the variation in baseline temperatures and the variability in when the symptoms develop - there is data showing that it can take up to 90 days to become symptomatic.

Failing this, then closing off transportation is the only other option.

So you just let the infected people roam around? I mean hypothetically let's pretend like we're not letting infected people fly...

You quarantine the infected as well as the potentially infected.

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

Certainly you isolate the sick ones - they are the easy ones. The whole idea behind quarantine is to outwait the incubation period to see if the subject in question is a carrier.

Why not let them stay? Because they broke our laws to get here. That makes them criminals, and makes a mockery of the people who go through the legal immigration process, sometimes waiting years and fighting long odds. Industries are not reliant on their labor. Industries are reliant on underpaying workers so they can profit more. They could pay a living wage, but they just don't care about the 99%. The blame is not equally shared by both parties. The Democrats are using illegals as a weapon to make this a one party system. The Republicans are pandering to the Hispanic vote, just trying to keep up with the Joneses. The important group who are being ignored here are the American people. They are overwhelmingly against illegal immigration, knowing that this causes lower wages and fewer jobs for them, while at the same time increasing crime/congestion here, as our standard of living decreases. That's not to mention the sacrifices made by the parents/grandparents of second and third generation Americans, whose ancestors fought in two world wars, with millions losing their lives to make the world safe and our country number 1. To turn it around, check Mexico's immigration laws. Americans cannot live there without depositing vast sums of money. There are no benefits for Americans trying to emigrate to Mexico. No food stamps, no welfare, no health care, nothing. The people are against this invasion, but the politicians don't represent us. The best we can do is vote the bums out every 4 years to minimize the damage they can do. Campaign finance reform and our system of bribery has to stop. The bribe takers must be held accountable. The 1% now own 48% of the planet, with their share ever increasing. Their greed is insatiable, and they own our politicians, many of whom are 1% ers themselves.

shit bro, you got that right...by the time obama and the dems get through with creating their new voter base the US doesn't stand a chance...if you want to read a good book check out Ton Chittum's "Civil War Two The Coming Break up Of America" Its an eye opener to say the least.

This is an example of the pot calling the kettle black... lol your words, not mine: You don't quarantine "sick" individuals

Isolation and quarantine are synonymous, saying otherwise is being obtuse. In health care the term we use for isolating potentially infected people is rule out isolation, fyi.

I'm out. This thread is as ridiculous as the news.

They are a long way from being synonymous.

An isolation ward in a hospital in no way resembles quarantine. Quarantine can be accomplished by simply providing some housing that doesn't allow intermixing with the native population. People in quarantine live basically normal lives while waiting to see if they develop symptoms, at which point they would be moved to medical care. Quarantined livestock is kept separated from the rest of the animals until they either develop symptoms or outlive the incubation period - if they develop symptoms, they are put down, not kept in quarantine.

As the Webster's definition that I quoted said - "suspected of carrying". There is no "suspicion" once the person or animal becomes symptomatic, they are dealt with in a different manner at that time.

*edit* - Here you go, Bobble -

"A quarantine is used to separate and restrict the movement of persons; it is a 'state of enforced isolation'.[1] This is often used in connection to disease and illness, such as those who may possibly have been exposed to a communicable disease.[2] The term is often erroneously used synonymously with the medical version of the term isolation, which is "to separate ill persons who have a communicable disease from those who are healthy."[3] The word comes from the Italian (seventeenth-century Venetian) quaranta, meaning forty, which is the number of days ships were required to be isolated before passengers and crew could go ashore during the Black Death plague epidemic.[4] Quarantine can be applied to humans, but also to animals of various kinds, and both as part of border control as well as within a country."

On the last page somewhere idiit posted that story about the machine that can tell within an hour with a 90% certainty if you have Ebola. The machine they actually had and were not able to use due to some red tape that says it's only for research purposes not diagnostic at the dallas hospital duncan went to. Also, your not supposed to be contagious until you show symptoms, so theoretically if someone slips through like duncan then they won't necessarily infect others. I haven't heard of anyone from duncan's flight get sick yet.

Hence the idea of quarantine.

But even without the quarantine and with failed screening and then sending a patient home from the hospital, the only people who have become sick so far are doctors who came in to contact with bodily fluids of his. As long as no one else gets sick it lends a lot of credibility to the narrative that this thing is actually very beatable without closing the borders.

One nurse's boyfriend was reported to be showing symptoms. Duncan reportedly started showing symptoms on 9/24. If the 21-day incubation period holds true, the earliest that anyone else should have become symptomatic was day before yesterday. There was a report earlier this week that it could take up to 90 days to incubate.

The problem is that nobody really knows anything concrete about this disease, and it is foolish to potentially expose people without a hell of a lot more knowledge about it.

yeah I could only find that they quarantined pham's boyfriend which wouldn't be surprising since he likely had really close contact with someone who definitely has ebola
