Well, I can make 10 gallons of RO water, and 10 gallons of waste water. Or, I can make 5 gallons of RO water, 5 gallons of waste water, then add 5 gallons back.

Where I am, we are in a drought. Saving 25% of the water, and not unnecessarily buying a bottle of elements to add back in, are all ways of saving money and taking a lower impact on the environment.

By limiting the amount of water going through the RO membrane by 1/2 we also extend the time between filter replacements by twice as long. Let's say he gets 1,250 gallons before replacing the carbon filter and membrane. The cost of the RO water per gallon is about $0.14 when we add in the full starting setup. So, the grower could spend $1.40 on a 10 gallon reservoir, plus the cost of Cal-Mag, or the grower could spend $0.70 on 5 gallons of RO plus a few pennies for 5 gallons of tap. After the filter replacement of about $65 the cost drops to only $0.0528 per gallon.

Cheaper is better. Less impact is better.

Good points. I respect ur reasoning here. I guess im just too much of a lazy person to figure out how to adjust my feed and use some tap water like u suggest. But I see now u make a good point.

Thanks for the clarification.

I just hooked up an RO system in my house. A GE unit my bro had just sitting here. Not bad for free. Only problem is it's only giving up a gallon at a time. It says it holds four gallon's in the storage tank but I only get a gallon. Im wondering if the bladder pressure is low. I hooked it in the basement and ran three T fitting's I put one going up to the sink in the kitchen one to the laundry tub. For draining and what not. One to the fridge upstair's I doubt we will use the drinking water on the fridge, probably use the ice maker though. And for some reason it does not run very good through the fridge. Oh and one tap piped down to my grow room:dance013::biggrin:

I like your thinking snow ..its actually spot on. But do chk to see if your city tap water runs chloramine/chloramamine (I got kiked outta the spelling Bcuz I suk at it) cause those r bad and u do not want that bond forming in your coco(not directed at snow just a statement to all readers). I guess once dialed in and jars r filled Ill prob start doing it that way but j think we have 1 of the C's in our water. This was just a reminder.

Personally, I think all the hype and fear over chlorine and chloramine is a lot of bro science. Here's some links that demonstrate the necessity of Chlorine as an essential element for plant growth.

Essential Elements - Minerals

Essential elements for plant growth

If I were brewing tea and using a microscope, and really concerned about my bacterial populations and vigor, then I think I'd probably consider removing chlorine to help them be happier campers. But, it's not like watering my lawn has rendered it inert.

Hell, my water smells like chlorine. It's even got a little blue tint to it. I - Don't - Care. I pour it in the bucket and I mix in my nutrients and then I just feed it.

Now, there are things in tap water to be concerned about. Hexavalent chromium. Birth control hormones. Asprin. Pesticide runoff. Crazy amounts of sodium. Urea... All are worth filtering and you can be pretty much certain that if you live in a "desert" (I'm looking at you Pacific Southwest) that your water probably contains all of this in a sickening concentration.

If you wanted to filter all the chloramines you can go with a KDF carbon filter. The upgrade costs about $30 more for the system. Another way to deal with the chlorine/chloramine is to let it do it's job and chew on some organic molecules. Adding just 1ml/gallon of molasses to your reservoir will do an extremely good job of eliminating these compounds in a rather short period of time.

I just mixed a batch of 6/9 with the new RO water it is perfect 5.8 did not need no more phosferic acid for me.:tiphat:

Thats why I loved my RO system !

But dont forget it is good to have a slight drift in range of ph or at least In my exp. I think its good.

gives availability of nutes

Yep me too. I read someone talk about ph perfect or what not, and it made me think of gh 6/9 in ro, easy cheesy.

I think the ph drift comes into play in ur medium as it uses nutrients, and as it uses water and dries, I believe that's where u get ur natural drift and more availability of nutrients.

Mine is in the water or the acid. It would be 5.8 the day I mix and test it. Then the next day I would check what was left in the gallon jug and most times it would go from 5.8 to 6.0 or 6.1 by the next day after I mixed it. I have not checked to see if the RO 6/9 has drifted like it used to with the water before I installed the RO. Any one know what could be the reason why Im only getting a gallon out of it at a time. It says it's a 4 gallon storage tank that should yield 2 gallons at a time.

I dont know maybe your float valve in tank is wack. But 4 gals is silly neways...go get a decent trashcan from homedepot or wall mart and store 45 gals on hand. Makes life way easier.
or get some 5 gal sparklets bottles.
