purple strains and potency

Greetings all
Figured i would put this thread here rather than in the outdoor forum as i figure there are at least some outdoor growers who freaquent this board. My question is in regards to some of the purple types of cannabis, I just love the colors that you can get from some of these strains but have yet to run into any that have a really good stone most turn out to just be mediocre and mediocrity just will not do. I have grown out Purple Star, Early Purple and Potent purple in the last couple years and have always been disapointed with their qualities in the getting people good and stoned department and was hoping you guys might be able to suggest some comercially available strains that might perform better. This year i have been crossing some f1 Potent Purple seedlings with several differant males in the hopes of improving things next year. Some of the other requirments i have are relativly early finishing (my f1 potent purple seedlings finish in the first two weeks of september) and i need them to finish by october 1 and i garden in eastern ontario close to 45 deg north. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

well keep in mind this is how *I* feel...

first off, you are getting the wrong strains to start with.... as far as im concerned, when a strain is called something like purple star or early purple or potent purple, it sounds like a marketing ploy.

there are plenty of strains that will turn purple with the right care and the right temperatures.

i can always recommend any of the DJ Short strains (a bit pricey but there is a reason why). you can even get some skunk #1 and it will turn purple.....

i gues what i have been saying in a round about way is-
many strains will turn purple. the color is merely an aesthetic quality (visual quality). for purple buds you need first of all, the right temperatures, which is low, around 50-60F will usually bring out the tendancies for a strain to change colors.

have fun buddy

I would certainly agree that those purple strains suck ass but i have yet to find any that look as if they will finish in time in my neck of the woods (late september preferably). aesthetics are important to me (must be the ornamental horticulture background) but not at the cost of quality so it would seem that a little bit of experimenting is in order.
All in all what would you folks feel is the best of the available purples preferably for the great outdoors
Thanks again

They say most purple strains aren't as potent as the green strains. I'd say if your looking for potent purple buds check out these strains.

Deep Chunk
Gods Gift (The Purps)
Lavender
Blueberry

kinda disappointed to hear that about potent purple. being an OPT hybrid, I'd expect more. It's a good thing you're looking for purple weed with a good "stone", because there are plenty of purple indicas out there. You COULD try purple #1, being 100% indica, but i think the stone may not be the best. You could also try for a kush or afghani and just try to find a purple/potent mom....best bet is probably blueberry. Usually the answer with these "what's the best purple" threads..never the elite clones or the "purple this and that"..always blueberry..for good reasons

good luck

Hey guys don't knock the purple. The most potent strain I have grown or smoked to date happened to be a purple Blackberry/Bubba that would blow your head off. I agree though that most are medicore in the high department, but I like to smoke purple during the day because of its mellow daytime high. Anyway to answer to question go with one of Chimeras new strains, they fucking rock. I got several of his breeder mixes that come with blueberry crosses and they are all colorful and funky as hell. Trust me man his gear rocks. Not quite sure which would be the best for outdoors so just ask Chimera over at his forum.

Great information everyone and thanks alot. I have a few seedlings that have the look and i will find out soon if they have the stone(s). It would not at first glance appear to difficult to up the potency while maintaining a wonderfull looking plant but seeing the poor quality of the plants already on the market (well the cheaper outdoor ones anyway) i am guessing that it is not quite as simple as it would seem. So i will continue the crossing and grow out as many seedlings as possible (easier said than done outdoors as the political climate in Canada is growing less tolerant albeit a lot better than my poor neighboors to the south) keep good records and hopefully eventually develop the perfect purple strain that will bring happiness to the world (yeh i know good luck but i gotta strive for somthing). once again thanks for the info and keep it coming if their are any more pearls of wisdom out there.

hey I said I'd take some purple skunk pics.

I've had purple skunk quite a few times. this wasn't told to me to be purple skunk but I'm about 95% sure it is. fits the bill. could be its twin if it isn't anyway.

if your an attuned smoker you can usually be able to smell purple nugs with a blind fold on smelling it in a jar. whatever that chemical is that makes purple weed... it has a somewhat distinct smell and this strain like many has that purple smell. but its very sweet and floral. stone is indica and will put you on your ass out of a bong.

I've heard alot of people bitch on p skunk b4 but maybe they got bad phenos. I know for a fact its won amature harvest cups on several occasions under its other names (shaman, backwoods purps, gb, etc)

I was given a free camera by a friend who laughed at me spending time on forums with good weed and no cam. great gift but its a cheap camera and I'm far from a photographer. here are some pics of the purple skunk. I broke that round nug in half to give a trich shot. sorry for bad pics. they are mottled purple and quite resinous. tons of bright white trichs.

Are those outdoor plants? If so thats why they are probably purpling up.

Yes, but they are still purple. My RomP19 was purpling up all year in 90+degree weather

Word. That and Mendo Purps (now where did I put those pics??). I kind of remember a post from Nspecta a while back where he listed the results of an analysis done with gas chromotography (sp?) to asses the THC and CBN percentages of different infamous purple strains. No doubt the grow conditions has a significant affect on the potency but I do remember Mendo purps being on top, followed by Erkle, and then GDP. I would just post the URL but being the intriguing and colorful character he is, Nspecta edited his post to exclude this information... Who knows, maybe he'll drop by and give us his two cents.

Some purple herb pics:

Another batch of erkel
