I just read 85 in my hood the next two days. Hopefully this ghetto a/c continues to save my ass. Just add hotel ice.

I just saw a news story that says Red Thread and/or Rust Fungus is tearing up everything around here lately...lawns, gardens, shrubs, everything. Spores are everywhere and thrive in this heat/humidity combo. Worst part is, it looks like they are dying from heat and drought so we water them...which makes it worse. Ugh.

I've been researching/mentally designing an upgraded ghetto a/c over the last few weeks,
imho you can get away with running a much smaller pump which produces less heat, consumes even less power etc. and use 1/4" OD copper swamp cooler line which is relatively cheap(also slower circulation isn't a bad thing) . basically you want to run multiple tight coils(you can wrap the tubing around a 2" pvc pipe or so) and arrange them in a way that you can fill up an ice chest with as many coils as possible thus giving you maximum surface area(the better the ice chest the more efficient...those 5day chests are awesome in my experience), this is a closed loop from the contents of the ice chest. This is the key upgrade imho, fill the ice chest with SALTY ICE WATER(mythbusters fastest way to cool a hot beer to 34F other than liquid nitrogen, I do it all the time if I find a warm beer that I want to drink asap) you're going to need another separate fresh water reservoir(preferably an igloo gallon/2gallon water cooler or similar) to contain the pump in order to recirculate fresh water and keep the system closed loop. then coils in front of a fan just like you're running(although my concept also uses the 1/4" tubing for this coil)...all you have to do is add ice and salt to replace the volume of water that you remove...use sidewalk salt/pool salt it's a lot cheaper than table salt. also if you get a rubber stopper that fits in the drain plug you can run the tubing lines through it without ruining a perfectly good ice chest...although the risk of a leak is obviously much higher....you can also integrate another fan coil or two if needed, it's just a matter of finding the balance of water flow to temperature dispersion. One more thing, if you're home freezing use warm water to make ice; as crazy as it sounds warm water actually freezes faster than cold water because the molecules are excited. if you have to buy ice it obviously makes it less economical although you still benefit in terms of less electrical consumption, although it seems Edison doesn't care how much juice you use so long as your willing to foot the bill.

BTW, the part those DIY sites always fail to mention is the incredible amount of condensation that will drip and soak. Soggy carpet no bueno. Gotta change a drip tray twice a day, just like a normal a/c.

Plus, the sheer volume of ice you go through makes this not an economical solution. Try and make it yourself, you'll prolly be burning up your refrigerator's compressor and again not an economical solution.

Anyways, hopefully this is just a short temperature battle for all of us, pray for shade fellas.

I'm surprised more of you guys aren't running the icebox. A chiller is more efficient than an AC...good to see some of my SD fam coming outta the woods.

I have tried those several times, they do help but for having to buy them and a chiller and they really dident do that much good for me. for my local you just cant beat the Bonaire swamp cooler hooked to the sentinel controller

I would use a swamp cooler as well if I were where you are hehe. I'm talking about those cats that are closer to the coast. SD Hydro, I think the San Marcos store, had the icebox set up. I was impressed with it. Not the product, but the idea and the concept.
