Dank weed smells like hay now that its dried?

yeah but there's a difference between a dry plant smell and the distinct hay smell. 85 is a bit warm and if there was no air movement then it might be a bit late. Maybe a long cure might get rid of it...? But if it's a dry plant smell then you're definitely ok.

Im slowly understanding my method.... at low temps the the bud dries slower in theory but the low humidity speeds it up.... in my fridge it accelerates the bud to proper dryness quicker at a cool temp reducing any chance of mold....

Keep in mind I live in a humid climate and hung dry buds never really dry... without the fridge id have to jar em way too early... opening the jar does nothing so its basically a mold hazard waiting to happen....

slow dry man.. 85 degrees is too high for a proper slow dry....

the main problem around stoners who grow lol . myself included.. when I first started. I had no idea that growing it was half the work.. SLOW DRY.. AND TOSS INTO JARS..

shit I find that 10-14 days is perfect.. then I toss into jars.. and leave for 24 hours pulling the moisture from the bigger nugs and stem. into the outer parts that were dry and crisp.. then burp..

but.. environment plays a huge part in drying.. so try to figure out a way to dry a lil slower.. even if u gotta dry inside of a tote. or something along those lines.

Climate controlled dry + cure environment ftw.

Thats what I have now. I got a humidity controller hooked up to an ultrasonic fogger for humidity and my carbon scrubber fan combo for dehumidifying in my grow closet. With the grow lamps off temperatures are 65 to 75 F and humidity is 6o to 70 % . My buds used to hang dry in 3 to 4 days. Humidity is very low here 20 to 30 % indoors. Now I hang dry for 7 to 10 days and cure in a clear tote with the calibre hygrometer to 60-65% before jarring. I find smell hard to pin down. Sometimes you have to squish bud a bit to get it to smell. Flavour is more important. When you smoke it the flavour should stand right out. My bud had poor flavour for years until I figured out humidity control was the key. Everyone has different environmental conditions. Some have ideal conditions. Many do not. DO you understand your environment? Where is the smell? It all left in the first few days of drying! Forever! Once the plant is cut the pores in the bud open up and if the humidity is low it loses water fast. The terpenes are carried off at the same time. Higher humidity slows this process dramatically and you will be able to smell the difference.

Yes such an important part of growing.... and so many variables its next to impossible to have one person use the same methods as the next and achieve the same results.... such as hang dry days and whatever else... practice makes perfect imo..... just dont jar too wet is my best advice.... I think theres too much worry about weight...

I had that smell problem. until I found the right genetics..

but mainly.. slow dry.. I find keeps most smell.. low temps.. I run 60-70 MAX on drying. and keep my humidity.. around 55-65. and the smell start KICKING again right when it is dry enough to jar up.

There are many reasons why it will have a distinct hay smell. Not all of them related either.

The most common factor is heat followed by lack of air movement. The climate should never get above 72f or so and about 50-60rh, if you do that with sufficient air movement you'll be just fine. 10 days -2 weeks. But you can't dry properly in 80% humidity, the temp will need to be warmer which kills terps.

I wait for the stem snaps, completely ignore the smell. The loss of smell in some strains and the bud being a lil cripsy makes people panic. I dont use RH monitors anymore either, I literally have like 8 of them by 3 different brands (analog and digital) and they all have a +/- of like 5% when doing the salt test and more mixed results on second and third tests. So I don't find them accurate enough to be useful (they were all cheap though so I can't rate expensive monitors). Temps in my dry room 70-75°F and 30-35% RH. Approximately 5-7 days for popcorn nugs, 7-10 days for big colas.

But ya I wait til the snap, jar them and check them daily, if the moisture has been redistributed and they feel a lil moist again they will either go into a paper bag, shoebox or on a screen if theyre clumping together from moisture. After a few hours theyre crispy again then back in the jar.

As it progressively feels less moist I decrease drying time (paperbag) and increase curing time (jar) until it get to the point where it only need a quick shake and burping for 10min a week. By this time it has been 2-3 weeks, the stink is there and strong but it is now the true curing in my opinion.

I avoid any chance of that being too wet for the jar... instead of burping I let the fridge do that in a couple days.... or whatever it takes. No room temp guessing for me... less worry imo... next to no change in odour from cut to jar... then let it cure... next to no burps required...

Sorry to have stated this so many times. Lol...

my sour bubble comes out sweet and gets real kushie after a couple weeks and is dried at 75/80 degrees at 50%humidity w stem and small fans that contact the flower left intact.after 5 days the stems snap outer leaves are crispy and the middle of the bud is moist.I bag sweat opening every 24 hrs. until stable and into jars at 65% opening until stable at about 60%.i think premanicuring all the fan leaves large and small can detract from the flavor as liquid(pith?)seeps out from the open wounds and drys on the surface of the flower.MD

Way to hot, by a ton. Try 65 degrees and 55-60% rh

the other is right...85 is to hot...you can gas off your terpenes..I like drying at 60-65 and good air circ...as it dries you get the nice dank smell more an more each day...it takes a week to get snappy on the branches at this temp but the aroma is killer...

are you bagging your shit up...then burping and leaving it in the same bag...?

If I go to burp a bag and it is a bit moist...it goes on a screen for a bit, then back in a freshbag.

Once it is done burping they go into glass or mylar bags.

ive noticed.. how long u take them into flower.. will usually matter as to how much they will smell.. taken a lil longer.. always gets me some super loud shit..

honestly. ive noticed i chop. they smell great for 4-5 days.. then 2-4 days of less smell.. and bam.. that smell comes right back and if i am not running my carbon filter in the dry room.. omg the cops would be at my door . before i got a filter for the dry room.. it would stink up the entire house.. from top to bottom and out in the back yard.

now filter.. just stinks like crazy in the dry room.

same here.. i use bags.. or ill put some clear plastic down in a box and as i take them down from hanging.. cut them up into the box.. let slowly dry from there on..

if they are drying to fast. ill toss in decent size bags 1-5 gallons.. and fill up half way and close for a few hours.. or longer depending on how dry... get that moisture to come out the stem.. and back into flower.. and if too wet. back onto the screens or in a box with the top open. or paper bags.

ive ruined some awesome bud drying to fast, never ever ever use heat, dehumid is ok , i just use a fan indirectly to circ ulate the room, cool dark room for a week or so with leaves on, trim, jar , check it in 2 days , take out dry 1 more day, then jar and forget, All that burping is wasted effort, never again

i dried them in a small room on top of window screens at 85°…

any tips??

Yes , next time you go to all the trouble of growing a beauty like SB , dry it properly . 85* is no good . Cold dark dry with a cold fan is the only way to get the best from your buds .
