Dear Americans

I have been browsing a several marijuana horticulture forums and one thing I have noticed is that many American growers use a DIY odor filter or not at all. I'm from Holland and here every grower from hobbyist to commercial uses a commercial filter. So just out of curiosity I was wondering whats the big deal?

My guess is that a small percentage of U.S. growers DIY their own Carbon Filters. Maybe I'm wrong. No way to know. -granger

easier to buy a filter already set up then just change carbon as needed than to build one from scratch. im a huge DIY fan, but taking that on would be a headache and a half compared to finding one in the local online ads.

New growers are easily acclimated to the smell of their crop and insist a DIY is adequate.

Experienced growers recommend a pro filter to beginners.

A smelly grow will get you pinched every time.

Good thread!

A smelly grow will get you pinched every time.
Longtime ago I had 5 plants, I left them in 6.5l jar so they where pretty small. It was a micro grow I used 300watt of fluorescent light. I was fooling around with the fancontroller and I forget to turn it on. Whoah, after a while you could smell my plants 6 blocks away. Here we have small houses, not like in the USA.

Later I noticed neighbors started to ask questions. I never thought that the smell of a mj plant can be so powerful. Since that moment I have learned how crucial a filter is. So in my opinion I think a good filter clears the weed smell for 100%.

yea i have always used a good filter or 4 with negative space haha it might just be me but i always think i smell the ganja outside my house hahaha i have an 8" can fan filter combo just for negative space in my flower along with 2-6" can fan filters for lights and a 4" for my drying tent. i have had a cop at my door looking for a neighbor of mine never say anything about the smell :) and if he had x-ray vision he would have know he was standing 4 feet from my ladies in flower hahaha

6 blocks? wtf you guys must have a really clean non polluted environment or that was some strain. me personally i'm growing micro so i don't have the ability to fit a commercial filter in my grow. however since i know the principle behind carbon filtration i can simply tailor make a filter to fit whatever box i design.

but i also live in a place where people are used to smelling weed even though you go to assrape prison for trace amounts. so if i run without a filter on my box and it smells a little like weed in my house no one would notice much since everyone's smoking weed and their house prolly smells like weed too. even still a room full of plants smells different than 10 small ones in a box.

you can not make a diy filter that will be as efficient as a professional model. even if you use the same carbon, you will never be able to get it as compacted as they get it with the machinery to do it.

when it comes to ventilation and filtration going over capacity is the way to go. slow down the air with good speed regulator, uses the largest diameter ducting you can fit and have a filter that can deal with more then the ventilator can, that way your filter last longer too, but mainly it's working so slowly that not a hint of smell escapes.

as gaius says above,,,
never, ever cut corners with your filters,,,i use a 12inch when a 10in would be more then adequate,,,a reliable speed controller is a must,,,get the biggest cann or other premium scrubber that your space allows,,,,s2:tiphat:

I used store brand generic filters for awhile... CAN have been totally worth the extra 20% $$$... Zero smell with CAN... even the best generic still let some smell through.

i've used my DIY filters for years and never smelled a thing. they work fine, i just have a hard time balancing the heat/noise tradeoff. so i just remove one or both when it gets too hot. i'm only growing a few plants and everyone around here smokes something. no one's gonna notice this level of smell. or no one cares. i dunno i can't compare what i smell with what you smell. but they do work.

You see thats the difference here in this country, police don't need a special warrant to get up with a heli and check the city around with a flir camera. In this area where I live there are many raids and busts. Almost every week they discover a growsite. Couple weeks ago there was a bust in my street the poor guy only had a small tent with 10 plants lol.

Because the police absuses FLIR growers are forced to insulate their growrooms and use different ways of growing. Many growers are starting to use CO2 with sealed rooms now. But the majority of all growers I know still use the traditional way to grow marijuana (even commercial growers). Last year they bust 96 growing sites only in my neighborhood. Heat isn't the only problem the main problem why people get busted here is loose lips

I was hoping for the same hahaha :respect:

lol haha it doesn't matter we're all humans and we have the same hobby :D When I visit American growshops on the internet I notice you got some great equipment compared to us. I can't even find one single growshop here in Holland that sells mister nozzle for a hydro setup.

Pfft, to contrast that, buying beneficials over here is a joke. I love looking at Koppert, then switching back to the idiotic Canadian options... A nice new place just opened up on the island though, just placed an order for a whole pile of cucumeris :D
