cannabis and short term memory loss

In the book Botany of desire Michael Pollan talks about cannabis's cannabinoids and the human cannabinoid receptors. I not going to tell you that marijuanas cannabinoids are meant for humans but they do fit the human cannabinoid receptors. To my understanding one of the functions of the human cannabinoids receptors is to selectively not remember certain life events. when when marijuana's cannabinoids fit the human brain receptors we tend to forget certain events.

long story short the foreign chemicals such as a cannabis's thc/cbd fit the human brains receptor that anandamide would normally receive. anandamide is a cannabinoid that your body produces. by thc fitting into the humans receptor for anandamide it can block the brains synapse causing memory loss and a few other brain functions.

as much as i loved getting high with my friends, swimming, and smashing a entire box of fruit loops when i was 15. i may be a little smarter today if i hadnt smoked that shitty brown brick weed full of stems. do i regret it? NO. but moderation may have been a better choice.

please correct me if i'm wrong.

An awful lot of that dry, brown brick weed, that was full of stems in the 70's was not too shitty at all.. Yeah, a lot was, but man, I had some AWESOME Mexicans and central American weed back in those days....So what if it had stems and seeds? We got out a frisbee or a double album and sifted the stuff out.. It was part of the ritual.

As far as memory loss goes,,,, wait a minute, what the fuck were we talking about?

Less regret over cannabis than with many other areas of my life.

It doesn't make you dumber but it can make you too lazy to study. But then it's stupid to smoke before studying so maybe there's the link.

The short-term memory effects dissipate if you abstain. And then who do you blame for your bucketload of stupid? Longterm memories are still formed just fine.

I used to smoke before Accounting Classes, I graduated

But I guess that was before weed got good (1976)

I learned I program in Unix and C better when I'm stoned

Peace

yeah, I zipped through physics & calculus my last two semesters stoned to the gills. being ripped DID cost me on a final in calc though. I tore through it in record time, but forgot to go back, rework the probs with my solutions in place of the variables & only got half credit. "if you don't PROVE that you are right, you are half-wrong" was his motto...

Well all I can do is speak from my own anecdotal evidence but I started smoking at age 11 and from the age of 13 - 21 I had my IQ tested 3 separate times. Throughout this time I smoked maybe not daily but multiple times weekly. The first test I scored 146, the second test about 2 years later I score in the low 150's, the third time at age 21 I scored 164.

Now just like anyone else I get stoned and make stupid choices or forget things, etc. So I can say yeah, maybe the marijuana cannabinoids are blocking pathways relating to recent events and short term memory while under the influence but regular use hasn't seemed to cause any permanent damage. Is it possible I could have achieved greater potential had I not smoked marijuana? Perhaps. I could also say I could have achieved greater potential had I not been jailed for several years and given a permanent black stain on my record that has held me back career wise.

Hempcat.....hmmm, perhaps if you had a twin that didn't smoke and you were both tested together numerous times, then maybe what you are saying would mean something..but as it is, it's meaningless isn't it.

What's it like being a genius? Do you find most people with average IQ's too dumb and boring to hang around with? Can you remember a long list of phone numbers or any other type of party trick? In conversation with average IQ people do you talk with them and also maintain a separate line of thought on a different subject going on in your head at the same time?

No I don't find most average IQ people boring or dumb. To me IQ is not really a good measure. Having a high IQ does not automatically equate to being something like Einstein, just as having a lower average IQ doesn't mean you're stupid. Lots of average IQ people just work harder to achieve results as good as people with high IQ's. The only real difference in my opinion is higher IQ people can usually grasp things quicker and so don't have to study as hard to get a 4.0 GPA. Whereas a lower IQ person may need to spend hours going over text books trying to memorize things. As for party tricks, I'm too modest for party tricks. Besides I don't think each person with a high IQ has it manifest the same. Some may be good at memorizing and such where others may be more intuitive about whatever they get interested in and pick it up faster. Perhaps it could even manifest as some sort of psychic gift?

When I talk with people I sometimes have my focus almost entirely on them but other times I might have more then one separate thought going.

As for my anecdotal evidence being meaningless I disagree. If someone says doing something will conclusively cause this to happen then it should happen. So when a case comes up where it doesn't happen it starts to chip away at the accuracy of the conclusive statement. The more cases like mine the more it chips away. Truth is there are few good unbiased studies being done on the effects of marijuana on the brain. So nobody can be certain of the effects good or bad.

Short term memory is gone, gone, gone...

Dont smoke flowers, but inhale close to a 1/4 zip a week in oil...

Was watching the 1980 movie Popeye the other night. Can recite damn near EVERY line and song and haven't watched it in 20 years...

But cant remember what I ate two nights ago....

Its fucking bullshit...
