Hey guys (and girls)! like the title implies, I am new-ish here and thought I'd introduce myself a little bit, for those who may or may not care :p

About me:

My name is Ryan, I am a 25 year old freelance software engineer that still attends school part-time (can never learn too much!). I suffer from insomnia, extremely debilitating migraines, anxiety and a whole lot of other "problems." I have been growing cannabis for the past year now, and it's been one of the best things that has happened to me, spiritually.
Just to be clear, I am a MA Medical patient. :)

My history with cannabis:

I guess this is where I tell you about the first time I got high, right? Sorta! Growing up I had really religious (not bashing) and uptight parents/family, so drugs, alcohol, whatever of any sort was really frowned upon. I hate to admit it, but I was one of those good kids that thought it was stupid. I first smoked weed when I was 13 with a friend... lets just say that looking back, it probably was just hay . It did nothing. so from then on it was really cemented into my head that weed is bad/stupid. I didn't touch cannabis again until I was 23.

During those 10 years, my migraines became progressively worse in pain, duration and frequency. To the point where it felt like I had the same non-stop migraine for a month straight at one point. I was in and out of the ER, and seeing specialists trying to figure out how to fix this.

Long story short, many tests were run, and I was pointed to a neurologist. I did trials on many medications all of which had some horrible side effect or made me feel bad (which is a side effect :p) There was only one thing that really helped me and has helped many, MANY other migraine patients, Imitrex. Problem with imitrex is that it cost $70~ (last I checked many years ago) per pill and my insurance wouldn't cover it.

One night I had a really bad migraine and I couldn't sleep. I had been up for 3 days, and my friend told me I really needed to chill out and relax. He suggested smoking weed, and I told him my view on it... he laughed and said "trust me." So, he got some bud and we smoked my first REAL joint... Lets just say, that night, I never slept so well in my life.

I am proud to say that thanks to cannabis, my 14 year battle with migraines have gone from at least one a day pre-cannabis treatment, to now, once a month if that... and I sleep every night! yea, that's actually hard for some people.

Well, that was a little about me, and how cannabis has humbled me. I am not an expert grower by any means, and I am joining in hopes of being able to expand my knowledge, make connections, help pass my knowledge on to people where and when I can, most of all I want to do my part in de-stigmatizing(word?) cannabis through sharing my story and how it has helped me.

...and hopefully, some day do some test grows for Bodhi . Yep, I am a Bodhi fan boy!

Thank you for anyone who actually took the time to read my story! Smoke up! :ying:

I'm sorry I didn't mention the particular strains I've grown, but I have. I've grown out from bodhi: Blue Tara, RKU, Dream Lotus... I have Synergy, and Lotus Larry in the bank for some rainy day :)

Hello and welcome, Lolryn. I'm interested to know, have you found any one particular type of weed that seemed to help with the migraines over other types? Indica, Sativa, high THC, CBD, ...etc?

Antrim, thank you for the welcome! From my very limited experience with cannabis, I've found most sativas (I have a really nice sativa pheno of Dream Lotus that is amazing for this) are really good at helping mask that lingering pain of my migraines or that feeling of one coming on... When I already have one and just need to sleep, that's when I bust out the indicas to just sedate me. For this, I used a freebie GDP Purple Dream that I didn't have high hopes for, but turned out to be an incredible plant. I have not messed with high CBD strains yet, I missed out on Bodhi's high CBD Strains.

If you, or anyone else has any good experience with high CBD strains for migraines, I'd love to hear it. I am sure I'm not the only person that'd be interested in hearing about that experience too :p

And there lies the answer . This site is probably the biggest encyclopedia of Cannabis on the planet . Good people & good growers on here . Never be afraid to ask a question because some nutter here will be able to point you in the right direction .

That is why I chose to join this board over others. Not that other boards are bad/worse... the more information out there the better for all! But I don't have the time to stay active on multiple forums. So in the past year or two that I've been lurking this site and all the other sites, it seems this one is most professional or grown up, as well as the most resourceful.

That Purple Dream looks amazing! Tell us about your setup. What medium are you using? Nutrients? Lights? Nice pics bud!

Well, currently I am running a 1000w HPS vented hood and all that jazz in a 4x4 secret jardin tent for flowering, and a small t5 8bulb fixture for veg... I may set up a 600w for test breeding when I get bored and find a nice male (which I may have found a really nice purpling blue tara male!)

Right now I am using 5gal pots for flowering.

As far as my medium goes, I'm 99.9% organic. I use all organic fertilizers, but I use Promix. I used to be a FFOF nut when I was first starting out but at $16 per 1.5cf it wasn't cost effective anymore once I started really digging into the organic "super soils".

My recipe is close to that of subcool and such, but when I went to my local nursery (not hydro shop!) they were basically like "wtf? why so complicated?" and they were amazing in helping me choose my organic recipe which I can't say has a real science to it. but consists of promix, bumper crop, growstone(awesome recycled glass instead of vermiculite/perlite), tons of meals, blood, bone, kelp, green sand, guano, some crazy organic stuff they make locally. It is a dry fert with tons of beneficial bacteria. I mainly use it when making final transplants and then top dress about 4-5 weeks in.

I hope that covers it all, any other questions I'd be more than happy to answer :D

Your setup is almost identical to mine. I use Roots as my base soil. If you haven't checked into it already, I'd highly recommend blumats. They really seem to keep my entire pot healthy and full of life while cutting down on a lot of upkeep. Hope mine turn out as good as yours look.

oh nice, you got some of the GDP purple dream?! I had 2 phenos (from only 2 seeds). The one I showed you a picture of, and another that had little to no side branching that made insanely huge buds. yield was there, but potentcy, smell, and effect just wasn't wasn't there. the pheno I Kept makes really tight dense nugs and smells skunky and fruity with a 1 hit and quit effect.

I pretty much smoke that every night before bed.

Forgot to add... I made a microdrip irrigation system for my room, with a simple pond pump... it's not the best solution, but I'm experimenting and trying new ideas out to get it right. it's set to feed a couple mins twice a day... it's been a life saver. took me almost a year to actually do something like that for my grow room. It's such a nightmare trying to get to the base of the plants when it's 7 weeks deep of flowering.
