That's taught in self defense. Distract the dog with an object by puttiing it between you & the dog. Naturally dog will try to disarm you with your "object" 1st. Use your shirt or anything you have on you if you can't find a nearby item (like stick or garbage can lid, etc...). Then give dog a swift kick to the head or jaw (more vulnerable part) when dog is distracted.

I've had to kick a BIG German Shepard (right in the jaw) once that had always bothered me when I passed by (it was always kept loose near a cement yard), after that never even thought twice of going after me again...
