Try this mate:

The first thing you must do is enable the Chromebook's Developer Mode, but be aware that this will erase anything you may have saved to the device's internal storage.

1. Press and hold the Esc and Refresh keys, and then press the power button. The Chromebook will reboot into Recovery Mode.

2. A yellow exclamation point will appear on the screen with a warning message, press the Ctrl and D keys simultaneously to continue to the next screen.

3. Press the keyboard's Enter key to turn OS verification off and confirm the decision to turn on the Chromebook's Developer Mode. A red exclamation point and a warning that OS verification has been turned off will be displayed on the screen, followed by two loud beeps, this is normal.

Sit back and wait as this process could take up to 10 minutes to complete. Don't panic if you see a red exclamation point after Developer Mode has been enabled, the system will reboot back into Chrome OS shortly.

4. Open this link in chrome browser: http://goo.gl/fd3zc
Save the file to your download folder

5. Open the Chromebook's terminal by pressing the Ctrl, ALT, and T keys together.

6. Type "shell" in the command line (without the "" ) and hit the Enter key.

7. Next, type "sudo sh -e ~/Downloads/crouton -t unity" and wait for Crouton to install. If your Chromebook has a touch screen use the command "sudo sh -e ~/Downloads/crouton -t touch, unity" instead.

You will be asked to enter a username and password once the installation process is complete. This is separate from your Chrome OS login and will be used inside of the Ubuntu operating system.

8. To enter Ubuntu type the command "sudo startunity" into the terminal.

To get back to Chrome OS from Ubuntu, press the Ctrl, Alt, and Back keys together.

To start Ubuntu open the Chrome OS terminal and type "shell" in the command line, followed by "sudo startunity"

Any problems, hola!

Peace

Have you got a usb hard drive or data stick you can backup whatever's on there with, then move it back over once you've wiped the chromebook?

Chrome OS doesn't run TOR so you have to download an app to run Linux as a virtual machine then run TOR via this. All very complicated!

do you know if a chromebook can be made to boot from a flash drive? (or cd drive or any external media?) I have 1001 diff linux distros that can and will run beautifully from flash drive etc you could possibly have a situation where you boot to a little linux install on a flash drive when you require a secure browser

Disregard my post! Hadnt read the thread through. Looks like Piff knows what hes talking about. If i had to recommend a distro for beginners/people coming from windows/mac ecosystem i'd say go for kubuntu. Its the kde version of ubuntu, its very windows-y. Ever so easy to use and you can use "wine" to run windows executables. I hope you do manage to get a linux distro going SPG, if you have any questions regarding linux/setting up an open source system please dont hesitate to ask, ill be happy to help anyone escaping the world of proprietary software

Nah mate, otherwise I'd just recommend TAILS which is basically stripped down linux for running TOR securely and can be booted from CD/USB stick.
