First butane distill

This is my first time distilling butane and playing with my new MkIII. I am going to pump 5lbs into the 6x12 spool. Then distill it from there using my soup pot at 80 degrees and pumping it into my recovery tank. I plan on doing that cycle 3 times till my R600 tank is empty and it's all in my recovery tank. How's everything look for my first stage? :dance013:

I wouldn't do it that way. The appion doesn't like pumping liquid. That r600 has a Liquid dip tube.

r-600 tank-->mkiii butane injection port --> appion --> recovery tank.
Only inject a little butane at a time, controlled via ball valve

control the butane flow at the r600 tank? How often? Don't I just leave it open till I get 5lbs?
Also should I put the MKIII in 80 degree water once 5lbs are in it?

You can control the flow at the injection port ball valve. have your r600 tank on a refer scale and regulate the lbs you put into your spool at one time. It's been a long time since i ran a mkiii but I wouldn't put more than 4-5 lbs at once. Have your mkiii in warm water from the start

Ok so I'll move the scale under the R600 tank. Then close the injection port valve when I hit 5lbs. Pump till I hit 0-psi then open the theinjection port again and do 5lb more? Should I have the recovery tank in ice the whole time? How's this look except the scale location?

We high recommend having the recovery cylinder on ice when recovering butane. This is to keep the tank cool and butane from building pressure and slowing your recovery times. We also recommend using a little bit of warm water (80F at least) on your collection chamber to help the butane phase change from a liquid to a gas. I remember GW saying not to go over 80F on your collection pot when distilling as to no volatilize any unwanted chemicals.

We ordered a new video camera that should be here when we get back from Michigan. We are going to start recording videos of how to do a run and also videos on how to distill your butane from canned butane or a cylinder.

If you get in a pinch during our business hours (M-F, 8-5 MST), please don't hesitate to call us at 888-572-1911 option 2.

Cheers!

A 6" OD spool has .083" walls, so it has a face area of 26.73 square inches and therefore 26.73 cubic inches per inch of length. At .0217 lbs per cubic inch, every inch of column will take .58 lbs of butane, so 5 lbs would take up 8.6" of the 12" available using the extended lower end pictured.

That shouldn't be an issue, but on the larger units, I try to keep the rapidly boiling puddles at least 6" from the pump intake, so you might consider running 3.5 lb lots.

Yes, the recovery tank needs to be chilled to dissipate the heat picked up from the process and from the heat of compression, to keep the pressure from rising higher and slowing down the process.

Total success! I ended up distilling all 14 gallons into my recovery tank.
What was left over was some foul smelling oil. Next up my first cleaning run with
spent material. Thanks for all the help guys!

Nicely done!! How tall is that 6" collection spool? Was that more expensive ?

Im wondering about ordering the DIY with bigger collection spool, wasnt sure if that was an option. On the site it just has diff Column sizes for options.

eDIT nevermind I see they have the 450 and 1000g options with the 6x12 base now!

Cheers!

just ran 2 cleaner runs with spent material then one run with new material. I used the 12" spool for getting my feet wet. Can't wait to pack this lb tube!
