A different kind of ash test

Load a bowl with weed, don't pack it in. I like to use a relatively whole piece vs ground up.
Smoke it all.
Empty the ash into your clean hand and rub it in.

Smell the patch on your hand.

Report your findings.

Thanks!

Ok ok.. let me expand.

A few years back I had a dealer that got lots of skunky. The ash always had the smell of burnt matches... sulfur.

Cut to now... I'm smoking on OK commercial quality buds... almost never get anything skunky. The other day I finally got some good skunk.. I expected that the sulfur smell would be in the ash, as a consequence of the strong skunk smell.... but no, it smells of Ammonia.
I was a little surprised.

Anyway, I was reading the white ash thread and various other flushing debates, and I see people talking about ash color, but never ash smell.

Looking for input on the topic.

^interesting idea to taste the ash, but hardly a thread-ender.

I hope we can correlate an undesirable smells in the ash to a specific nutrient...
For example., does ammoniacal nitrogen cause the ammonia scent?

The next question is, does smelly (possibly unnatural) ash correlate to differences in smell/taste in the product?

How about those tastes? Salty ash?
Is there a caustic-tasting ash? acidic-tasting ash? Rotten-eggy ash? Ash that tastes like burning(/wiggum)?

One thing from a neighbor smells sulfurous... ick. Now I know why! Thanks!

I like it when I get a grey ash with no odd flavours :)

Hazey-incenscey smelling sativa with similar flavor, from someone who probably flushes.
Ash was dark grey to black, ash smelled clean and slightly 'savory'.

Grapey smelling 'g-13', camphor in the flavor.
Ash same as above., dirty color but clean in smell.

Ever since I switched over to no-till organics I have a had a very dark thick ash when smoking bowls. Smoke is smoother and more flavorful than my previous fertilized grows.

I will do the ash smell test and return!

I think everyone to start taking pictures of there ash after an average sized bowl. I don't think you get the same results from a bowl/pipe as you do from a joint. At least I know I don't. Joints still burn nice and white and bowls like I said above, black and thick.

Peace
