It is the radiant heat that really causes problems. Think of a blacktop on a hot summer day.
I was unprepared for the stretch of a new strain and ended up with a couple less than 8" from a 600w HPS. I found that there are hot spots about 8" in diameter on either side of the bulb, about halfway down. Plants that were in the hot spots were affected the worst.
The tops would foxtail or develop multiple heads on a single cola, the leaves would roll, twist and grow deformed.
The tops were dense and absolutely dripping with resin. They also looked unique to me at least. Like golf balls on a stick. I have never seen this before but have read that it is common with kush strains.
I cant say for sure that the heat caused the increased resin as I was also experimenting with different nutrients I had in order to use the last of them.
in nature, they have been "hardened off" to acclimate intense sunlight. They dont get slammed with full sun until they grow taller than surrounding vegetation. By the time the hottest time of year comes around, they have a nice base tan
Also better air circulation, higher CO2 levels, cooler ground temps and other conditions unique to outdoor growing would seem to come into play as well.
Hi folks,
I'm battling the heat wave in the UK at the moment. Seen temps of 30c + for short periods.
I would agree with the previous statements that res temp is the key. A cool res & roots will alleviate a lot of heat stress on the plant, even if the canopy is sweating!
I also use blue freezer blocks at the hottest times. I place three frozen blocks in a plastic basket in front of my 2 x oscillating fans. May only reduce temps by 1 or 2 degrees for an hour or so but I reckon it all helps. The BEST investment I made in my grow room was a res chiller. Set & Forget - lovely.
Stay safe people & happy growing
