Shatter and Wax, the differences and how-to's?

I've been reading a ton of stuff, so much that I've become greatly confused to a certain degree.

Are there any definitive videos/guides that shows the process' involved in making each product? and/or specific lists with times/temps required to make such products?

The temperatures seem to vary depending on who is making the video and I've yet to get any similar product.

I've got an Across Internation 1.9Cu Ft Vac oven to do the heat work.

I would really appreciate any help here guys, getting kind of jealous of the quality of products I'm seeing online.

well that's what I've been doing, and why I'm so confused. It's not like I can afford to just experiment and risk wasting a bunch of product.....that could be very costly.

What exactly are you confused about? There are million threads all over the internet that give temps/times for these consistencies. This question has been answered time and time again, and will depend on a million factors from extraction, to purging, to handling and storage.

Mostly the creation of the wax. The videos I've seen so far haven't really explained much about the process in making the wax itself and what makes it different from shatter, specifically.

I've read that 120F was the temp needed to make wax, but my attempt did not result in a similar looking product, and it was vac'd down to 29 inches.

im in similar situation.. ive found a lot of people don't get why we are confused.. because.. in the 5 million threads.. from 2006- now.. u get conflicting shit about whipping.. not whipping.. freezing everything.. not freezing.. temps for shatter.. temps for wax.. temps for honey comb..

then u got dudes saying honeycomb.. is just underpurged oil.. and then if u watch the tutorial for wax.. or honeycomb.. its literally UNDERPURGED OIL.. in the tutorial. lol

so u just gotta try it yourself.. keep a notebook next to u .. and keep your own records.. so u know wat happened at what temps..

ive also noticed.. WAX isn't nearly as smooth as shatter.. or even a good sap..

but wax smells better. I wouldn't say it tastes better because its harsh so id rather not taste much and not cough my balls off.. over tasting it .. and coughin for days...

temps to get to wax.. supposedly.. over 115.. from wat I read.. people say its strain dependent.. and can happen all the way up to 145-150.. for honeycomb or wax.. so this is were it got me . lol. I took about 2 grams out of 20.. and left in my chamber.. and increased temps.. 5 at a time.. till I was up to 145.. 150.. and it was no change.. it showed no reaction all the way up .. stayed the same.. just seemed to continue to stay in the form it is in .a waxy buddery substance from nug.. and straight SHATTER from trim.. weird.. right.

Guys, you are confused because the rest of us have spent the time to learn the science behind the extraction process, largely due to the skunk pharm and a big no fucking thanks to the "errl heads" on youtube. The questions you are asking are not simple and require contextual considerations.

Nobody after 2013 will tell you to whip, terpenes are viscous, polar molecules are water soluble (why you freeze), shatter is the lowest temp, wax is middle ground, and as far as I know honeycomb is the same as wax.

You need to start out with quality, fresh product. Ironically enough i grow one strain (OG)and have for the last 6 years so you would think my results would be somewhat consistant. But even using quality trim, or nugs i can still get huge variety in my end product depending on a host of different variables: obviously time and temp, amount of product being purged (i use 5 gal pots and do small batches), the weather, the product it's self (different strains do different things), etc. As far as not wastin goods trying to figure it out, well it took me a shitload of trial and error and lots of "wasted" product and unusable goo (which can be winterized and still be used). I think any of the big players here that have success and consistant product, willtell you that they "paid their dues" many times over to learn what they did. Most here will diverge their techniques but that dosen't mean they will work for you. Its like a science project and should be approached as such.

Any other 190 proof spirit, lab-grade anhydrous 200 proof, and the really ineffective semi-polar cousin 99% isopropyl alcohol.

It says in big red letters in that listing "DOES NOT SHIP TO CANADA"

We get screwed a lot, mostly with shipping.

I'm considering trying out acetone for winterizing, I've made oil with it before and it's pretty clean, plus it's also polar if I'm not mistaken.

damn lack of editing..... but yes ebay MIGHT work depending on the seller, most likely though the problems arise at the border, not the actual shipping itself.

Shatter is a winterized extract and the alcohol that is to be purged is not volatile enough to cause much bubbles while evaporating with or without a vacuum.
Wax is an extract that has not been winterized and has been purged under high vacuum and solidified while the butane bubbles are escaping.

Sorry friend, I've exhausted my resources, although they weren't much help..

Acetone is very volatile man.. Although you could use it. You have to use so much heat to get out the nasties, and there isnt any point when all said and done. You can't attain shatter going that hot, nor can you maintain terps and flavonoids.

When it comes to nasty stuff, I'd suggest 99%IPA before acetone

Hey Big Johnny, are you running a CLS by any chance? If so, you could probably convert it to a little still. In fact, I kind of remember GW posting something about doing just that...

(goes to SPR.com)

ahh yes, here it is:

Also, they make some pretty clever little home stills. They probably don't ship to Canada, but if they do, you can find some pretty nice ones for around 4-500. Sounds like a lot, but if you're paying that kind of money for everclear, it'll be worth it.

I like this one 'cause it's shiny:
