I’ve rescued a few people in my days. Think about it folks, it is a humbling experience when you realize that the possible victim now has more days of his life in front of him. I know exactly how the OP feels and congratulate his efforts. I’m sure the folks he saved (and their family) are very grateful too.

and for what its worth my hawiian friend did most of the work.. in the end I just gave the dad a massive weggie as I towed him and one kid in....i was trained to always approach from behind as struggling folks will drown the the guy trying to save em when freaked out...headlock and tow em to shore....we share the credit..but in the end all I want is a peacefull meditation spot..tourist season is almost over...
