The World’s First Medicinal Marijuana Farmers’ Market Opens in L.A. This Weekend

Move over, kale. There’s a new green making a name for itself on the farmers’ market circuit.

Debuting this Fourth of July weekend at Boyle Heights’ West Coast Collective, the California Heritage Market, billing itself as the world’s first venue for selling fresh medicinal marijuana direct from vendors, will be open to any Angeleno carrying an official ID for the stuff.

“What we’re doing is giving patients in L.A. access to better, more affordable medicine,” says Paizley Bradbury, executive director of the West Coast Collective. “With dispensaries, the medicine can get pretty pricey. By removing the middle man, patients will be getting medicine direct from vendors for what is essentially a wholesale price.” According to Bradbury, some 50 vendors who are part of the collective will be in attendance selling everything from fresh buds to baked goods.

As for the legality of the whole operation, Bradbury says that the California Heritage Market is irrevocably in compliance with California’s law on medicinal marijuana. “We’re doing exactly what we’re supposed to be doing,” she says.

The 15,000 square foot space in Boyle Heights will be open from
10 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 4-6 at 1500 Esperanza Street. Attendees be warned: all ID cards will be subject to inspection for validity. “It’s not like a bouncer, but we do know how easy it is to get a card,” Bradbury explains. “We will check with the Medical Board of California to make sure a doctor’s license is up to date before accepting a card from that doctor.”

After working out the kinks in its inaugural weekend, Bradbury hopes the California Heritage Market will become a weekly event.
