How do you deal with mosquitos?

Lost my indoor op recently, which means I'm gonna have a bigger outdoor season. I have a few spots I've decided on, one of which I found last season. The mosquitos are really bad there. Lots more of them, and they seem to be a lot tougher than what I'm used to.

Usually I can get away with a light jacket/hoodie and pants, but these fuckers will bit through 2 layers of clothing, so even when I double up on pants and wear a jacket, they still get me pretty bad.

Last season the only way to protect myself was to either wear a heavy coat, or to make an outfit out of contractor trash bags cause they can't get through that. But the winter coat gets extremely hot on summer nights, and the contractor bag outfit makes a lot of noise, and the spot is close enough to people that I don't like risking the noise.

Anyone have a similar problem they've found a solution for?

I've used deet type sprays but these things seem immune to it.

I know a mosquito mask is real effective for the face area, but the mesh type mosquito net clothing only seems like it would work as long as it's not in direct contact with your skin, which is not possible while working. Looking for something tough enough they can't penetrate but not turn me into a sweat factory.

Maybe you could find a light rain coat in camo. I don't think they could bite through the plastic, and it may be cool enough for you. They can be extremely bad in my area, a cloud of the fuckers will just follow you around, more aggressive than regular mosquitoes. I usually just bear through and make it a short visit if they're really bad. Sprays never seem to do much.

They are making bug spray now with 40 % deet. The usual bug spray at most stores is 20% or less. Try and find some of the 40 % it works real good for me. Any bare skin must be hit with it to be effective. Avon Skin so soft is an old family trick that works as well. Put it on just like bug spray.

how do I deal with mosquitos???

first I avoid all deals involving mosquitos those bastards are tough negotiators, and they never take no for an answer.

the key is to negotiate so they only get the cheap bits, your hands and such... keep all your valuables secure.

there is a rarely used trick... you need a diversion... like something that attracts all the bugs to it and away from you... you need a small cuban child (mosquitos like cubans, who knew? :dunno:) and not any cuban american immigrants but authentic cubans, they can taste the difference, something in the american diet I guess... you can see why it's so rare :D

In the tropics of Australia and elsewhere we use Bushmans Tropical Strength Repellant. Works a treat. Has a very high concentration of DEET in it and is used by the army. No doubt the shit isn't good for you but if it keeps the mossies away….who cares.

I'd try a rip-stop military BDU coat and pants, its tough yet breathable and maybe a mosquito net for the head. DEET is some nasty shit, you should limit contact with it on bare skin.

Also watch out for ticks, lyme disease is no fun.

if it's wrong, man, I don't wanna be right!

as far as seriousness goes, hiding in the haze had a good idea with the military clothing I have some of the more modern pants and they are badass...get some gloves, the face net would help... but really avoid dusk and dawn and deal with the outdoors, its nature you'll have to learn you can't fight it you have work with it... I heard they don't like garlic, eat tons of it... maybe rub your skin with a couple cloves... IDK man I don't think you're going to get much help beyond the obvious stuff here.

go to off dot com and check out their repellants

I don't think mosquitos are to fussed about the origin of the blood they drink or in which country you originated.

It all tastes the same.

It's the cultural dietary differences... and how do you know it all taste the same... are you sampling the blood of different races around the world? Your SICK lol

It was all just a joke, a play on words with the title and how I "deal" with mosquitos and ultimately you just have to put up with them... and use OFF

Those fuckers are not gonna get any part of me, not even my hands. Hell no I'm gonna wear some super armor this time around. I wore work gloves last year and they bit me right through them. This time gonna use those thick rubber gloves that go halfway up your arm. I like the rain coat idea. Seems anything that is porous at all they can get through.

Not sure what a military BDU coat is? I know last year I wore my brothers camo jacket he was issued when he was in the marines. Bit right through that. These things are friggin like terminator mosquitos and they attack by the hundreds. It's pretty brutal. I already got a rhinoskin suit for the ticks. Love that thing wish it worked as well for these little bastards.

I wouldn't mind using a good spray if it works well, and it may come to that, but first line of defense is a tough layer of clothing. Rather not have to put that stuff on my skin.

Long term use of Deet will make you ill, it's a neurotoxin. I used it for a few months in a swamp and the effect crept up on me until I was suddenly ill and had developed a sensitivity to it, the smell would make me reach.

I now use a lighter spray (active ingredient Picaridin) that gives me no ill effects but I don't stay in the bush so long or often any more.

Deet could probably be safely used on outer clothing but I wouldn't use it again on my skin.

From here - http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/08/090804193230.htm - "We've found that deet is not simply a behavior-modifying chemical but also inhibits the activity of a key central nervous system enzyme, acetycholinesterase, in both insects and mammals".

Another strategy you might try is feed them 'over there' while you work elsewhere. It's how I often distract ants from entering the house. The female mossies in particular are after moisture and the protein in blood to support the development of eggs, so give 'em a bloody steak.

You could also try this http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=m570.l3201&_nkw=BTI+Mosquito around your site. It is also effective against fungus gnats in the gro room.

BDU is just standard Battle Dress Uniform, basically just like what you have. If they bit thru that spray is probably the best bet or maybe a bee keeper suit lol.

If you don't mind stinking like a cleaned toilet,
mix Dettol with baby oil, 50:50, for a good repellant.
Works for the banana farmers - it doesn't sweat off quickly.

But that's extreme and only called for if you're there for hours.
Which I'm not.

Best tip is "don't hang around."
It's your breath that they home in on.
I hardly do anything for my plants except cut down surrounding weeds so I make it quick and move between plants more if I need to avoid a cloud around me.

Also it helps if it's raining.

They been making these for years.... They even have 100% deet concentrations.

With that said the 25-30% concentrations (Deep woods off, and Off sportsman) seems to work really well for the big skeeters here. It needs to be reapplied every few hours if you are sweating good or go swimming or something. Also it doesnt work well on clothes.... for that you need permethrin, or to treat your skin with Deet first, let it dry for a minute then put your clothes back on.

If you are not hiking and need skeeter control in a limited space. The thermacell unit works amazing. As long as their is not a strong wind it really does make a 125 sq ft area of no skeeters.

The refills get expensive, however you can refill the butane part yourself very easily. I just need a good source for the blue chemical mat part.

Those thermacell units look interesting. Been reading and watching a lot of reviews and have yet to see a negative one. One reviewer said it also works for ticks. I think this is gonna be the winner. I'll be heading out to pick one up tonight.
