First grow - discoloured leaf question

Hey folks,

Short time reader and first time grower!

To put it mildly, I have no idea what I'm doing. I did plenty of reading before I started on this endeavour, but this is my first hands on experience.

I put two White Widow seeds in 1 gallon smart pots. I bought a bag of coco from the local nursery, put it in my smart pots and flushed through some tap water for two days.

I put the seeds in some paper towel and let sit for a day and then planted them in the smart pots. They broke ground quickly, but one of the two babies has some discolouration on the leaves that I'm not too sure about.

I have a 96x3W LED light hanging about 60cm from the top of the babies. The tent is located in a shed which is not insulated, so for all intents and purposes it's an "outdoor" grow with a roof/tent. I have an oscillating fan moving the air at the bottom of the tent (tilted upwards), a 4" inline fan suspending from bungees at the ceiling; sucking air through a carbon filter mounted inside at the top of the tent. There's an oil/ambient heater to provide a consistent temperature.

I have Canna Coco A/B that I've been using at extremely diluted levels on the babies.

The babies are about 10 days old.

Baby #1 looks good to me.

Baby #2 has discolouration on the leaves -- brown. It otherwise seems healthy. Baby #2 seems a bit smaller than #1, and its leaves are fatter.

Is there something wrong with #2?

Hi mate,

Firstly, taking a pic with regular light, and not your LEDs will show colours of the leaf properly. At the moment it's quite hard to tell under purple light.

That said, how diluted is 'extremely'? have you an EC/PPM meter? Canna have a feed chart, have you looked at followed it? Your seedlings are at the stage where they will need feeding, so make sure you are giving them enough. Chances are that'll clear it up in time - and make sure you set the pH to the right range (get a meter if you don't).

Environment shouldn't be an issue - even as you describe, it's an indoor grow.

let the coco dry out before you feed. not till bone dry but not so you are sitting in nute water all the time.

you have to coach them up.

I would never let my coco dry out. I used to lift for weight but I can just tell when there ready now. Anyway, despite the poorly lighted picture, it does look light a cal/mg def..
Add a ml of your favorite cal/mg supplement to each gallon of water plus your quarter strength nutes. Should clear up on new growth. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies folks. I have had a busy month and just got back here now.

I'm at about a month of growth.

The smaller of the two plants still has some discoloured/dirty looking leaves. I just picked up some Cal/Mag (OptiCal) from the local shop and added the recommended dose to my nute solution.

Both of them seem to be doing pretty well.

Baby #1 is growing stronger -- thicker stem, bigger leaves, wider area, etc. Height from top of coco to tip of canopy is about 13".

Baby #2 is growing well, but definitely has a smaller stem, smaller leaves, and has a brown/dirty staining. Height is about 11".

Anything to worry about? I assume that with the overall growth going so well, it's probably not the end of the world.

How much of Canna A + B are you using right now? I've been running Canna for the past three+ years and love it. I start with about 4mls of A+B per gallon of r/o water and go up to about 12 mills each at the peak of growth. I have never used cal/mag with canna ever.

That's interesting! There's a lot of different strategies that people use. It's day #2 with the cal/mag nutes and I imagine it's too early to detect any changes

i've been using Canna's site to get my measurements:

http://growguide.info/

My current mix has 30mL in 10L tap water. I added 10mL of CalMag and an additional 1L of water for a little extra dilution.

12mL/3.8L seems like it's quite a bit weaker than the recommendations from Canna's growguide.

Did you have problems with higher nute levels? What sort of pot size are you using?

Last but not least, how long do you normally veg for?

I normally veg for 30 days or so from seed, or about two weeks from clone. One thing to just be specific here is that when I say I start with 4mils per gallon of A + B, I mean I measure 4 mils of A and then add to the r/o water. Then shake it up pretty good and then add then add 4mils of B. So then there's 8mils of nutrients added per gallon. I also use .5mils of drip clean per gallon of r/o water and I water based on the weight of the container. I never water with any run off.

I start from seed in red beer cups and then transfer to 3 gallon smart pots. I'm also mist the fan leaves daily. When I started running coco I used GH nutrients with the 6/9 method but quickly changed to Canna which I like so much better.

My veg formula

!0 ml/gal of A+B
5ml/gal of cal mag
5ml/gal of some silica product
5ml/gal of some humic acid product.

DO NOT over water.Let them dry out.

Unfortunately, I think I was starting to run out of space. I switched from veg to flower at around 5 1/2 weeks.

The plants are about 6 weeks old now. From the bottom of the smart pot to the top of the canopy, the plant measures 32".

Everything appears to be going well otherwise.
