I also had the 1L and long before a year mine got a stank to it, so it went to an oak tree, so def do not use if it has any sour smell imo even a faint sour I started getting problems then it got to the point were I would want to vomit it smelled so bad, and it seemed like when bottle was half full of air it reacts to the air possibly? so maybe splitting up the 1L bottle to store half to reduce the exposure to air as often. but I'm giving up on RE I'd rather have a dead rez till I get more xp with dwc.

what I was told by the GH rep about a month ago(so take it as you want)-

the formula that was in the original silver bottle had a/some ingredients that are not approved in the US

h&g knows that people don't like the gold bottle(new formula) and are just rebottling the same formula(new) into the silver bottles again...I imagine a lot of people will buy the silver bottle again expecting it to be the original formula that kicked so much ass

GH rapid start was about 75% a effective as the original roots excel formula for me, and the new formula was MAYBE 40% as effective al the original formula. Now I'm no mathematician, but that's pretty significant....and rapid start is also decently priced.

I must say i like the old version better after converting back but i never had any real issues with the gold. I didnt like how it was thicker, but it never smelled bad or anything...

the gold version is shit. and your pretty fortunate to still have old bottles accessible to you.
the old roots excel was amazing. the new one isn't even worth adding in I chucked the bottle I bought. and it stinks.

Has anyone tried the new "silver for hydro" bottles yet? Is that the same as the old formula?

Also will it funk up a rez like the gold does?

I got a sample of gold and couldnt bear the smell of it while in the bottle or after being in a mixed up bucket after a day or two. Makes you wanna puke. I used to be fairly familiar with a bunch of organics back in the day but that shit is on another level.

Aptus Startboost is in a humic acid base and NOT intended for recirculating systems. If they tell you otherwise, caveat emptor. I tried running it in my ebb & flow system and, well...I'm not gonna bad-mouth them, it was my mistake. And it was a disaster. I'm glad I re-cloned my grow, otherwise I would've lost a lot more time.

Rootbastic is a good product, yet it relies on sea (laminaria digitata) kelp as rooting stimulator. It is good, but imo not better than Roots Excelurator.
Rapid start relies on willow water (saliylic acid) as a rooting stimulator. That's a bit misconstrued, because saliylic acid is more indicated as a systemic acquired resistance inductor. Sort of like the old schoolers who used to rock an aspirin in the res back in the day, but more readily-available (acetylsalicylic vs. salicylic). I've also seen "floaters" in unopened bottles of Rapid Start. And when you calculate the dosage per gallon vs Roots Excelurator's, lol, it's really not cheaper. Who knew, eh?

As far as "maybe containing heavy metals", nah--I suspect I'd get more heavy metals if I feed my microbes fish emulsion. Really. About five years ago, a back & forth started on a forum re: silver roots, about whether it had microbes or not. It always has had beneficial microbes. I know not everyone has a microscope available. Guess I was fortunate enough to have one handy 8 years ago and prep a sample in dilution. It was clear as daylight. So to me, this has never been an issue.

Later on, when Gold was introduced, I had a couple of misfires while I used it in DWC and ebb & flow, but none in soil/soilless. I called their tech support number and this is what I learned from the call:
Silver Roots Excelurator is suitable for recirculating systems; gold Roots Excelurator is better suited for soil, soilless, and coco grows (top feed / run-to-waste). The difference? Although both products contain beneficial microbes, Gold contains more. A shit ton more. It also has some plant extracts. That cleared up why there's a difference in viscosity and coloration. I went back to using silver in my DWC and ebb & flow grows, and use gold in my top feed runs, and everything is more than fine now. Good old days are here again.
When I asked about the odor in Gold, I was reassured--it is supposed to stink a bit. I figure, it's always been manufactured to be concentrated, packs a lot of beneficials and plant extracts, it's very likely they're cold-pressing the extracts too, so...yeah, it's gonna stink a bit. Not worried about it; results are spot-on. I also found out I can prolong Gold's shelf life by storing it in the fridge.

Silver for recirculating; gold for soil or soilless top-feed. I can live with that.

you want bad ass roots for a fraction of the cost?
SM90 FTW
skip the bacteria and shit

SM-90 is a preparation of canola oil and coriander essence. It is indicated for the prevention of pythium and as a mild suffocant for soilborne pests (root aphids, etc). Excessive use has the potential to clog calcium channels at rootzone levels. It is a good product, though, and also helps keep foam down while brewing actively-aerated compost tea (AACT)...but it is not a root stimulator. It just helps keep things clean.

THats the idea, silver doesnt have the higher volume of solids and is made for hydro. Gold is for soil
