I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to T & U posts, thinking something along the lines of 3/4" - 1" wooden stakes, steel garden stakes, or bamboo. So far it looks like about $2/ea for a 6' - 8' stake, compared to about $7 - $8 for a T-post, wondering if I can do any better. Besides nurseries, where can I find bundles of this kind of stuff?
Doesn't need to be very heavy duty, as the material is flimsy lightweight plastic netting. Planning on attaching 2' high poultry fence with 1" holes at the bottom, and 7' deer netting at an angle, so a 6' - 7' stake driven down about 1' might be ideal.

I like to put 4 8ft or better pieces of bamboo at the four corners of each pot I use and wrap my trellis netting around those and over the tops as well... kind of like a 3D Scrog. I use some steer fencing to make a cage around the plant that sits inside the bag and smaller pieces of bamboo for staking. I feel like bamboo is the better option for using as a stake or something to anchor the netting around b/c unlike thicker pieces of wood or a t-post, the bamboo is flexible and has some give to it. I feel this comes in handy when it gets windy b/c it allows the netting and bamboo to sway with the wind, yet still keeps everything anchored down. A rigid piece of metal or wood that doesn't sway with the wind can sometimes cause branches to break when you get a strong gust of wind.
Just my 2 cents... plus it's super easy to take a zip-tie and attach another shorter piece of bamboo to the bamboo that I use at the corners to tie down some of the more unruly kolas that become taller than 12 ft or so.
Haha... we must have been sharing one of those telapathetic moments... LOL. Didn't read your response until just now as I was skimming back through this thread, but that's exactly what I started doing.
Funny thing is that the next morning after I posted when we got out there to start working I took a look at the compost tumbler I use for getting all my dry amendments tumbled up along with a few shovels of the peat I'm using in my amended "Tom's mix" to make a nice, somewhat homogenous mixture before I add it to the tarp we've been using to make a "soil lasagna" before some light mixing on the tarp and then it gets scooped up with the CAT and dumped into the 300 gallon bags where it then gets a good mixing compliments of our 2-man auger... anyway, the thought struck me when I saw the tumbler that maybe turning the soil again a few times with the auger followed by another thorough watering each time would speed things up... and I'll be damned if it didn't do the trick on the majority of them in just 3 days of turning at least once each day and sometimes twice when there was still enough energy between me and my little brother who has never grown a thing in his life except a solid case of athlete's foot funkus and is literally getting thrown into the deep end of all this without so much as a pair of floaties or even a "swimming" lesson.
Got 12 of my starts for this spot I've had vegging from clone in 2-5 gallon smart pots since late march... going back in the morning to turn up the other 12 pots that are still a wee bit hot with plans to get 6 more put in, and then I'm still trying to decide what to put in the last 6... I had originally planned on putting out 6 Blue Dreams in a couple of weeks just because from planting it the last few years I know that it's going to outgrow everything else even if I were to wait until July...
BUT... I'm pretty sick of Blue Dream. Sure, it's good smoke, a SOLID fuggin producer and relatively easy to grow, but I'm just sick of it and in my neck of the woods it's the one strain everyone is still sitting on plenty of from last year. Found someone on CL with a strain called Double Dream (BDxStardawg) and F-13xSD that they were offering "teens" in coco ready for transplant. Both of these got me interested, but as with anyone I've ever seen doing 215 clones for donation I'm just a wee bit leery, and they still haven't answered two e-mails I sent. So far this garden has as follows:
(2) Bubba Kush
(4) West Coast D.O.G (first year with this, but I've heard nothing but great things and have a few in light dep that I just started tarping along with the mother plant I started in December when I got the clone... might be a little late to the DOG party, but I'm stoked)
(2) Jillybean
(2) Blueberry (a sativa dominant pheno from DHN... it's a first for me... anyone got any ideas or comments?

(2) Atomic NL (green pheno) that I plan on double planting between 2 bags... never grown this one out either and am still on the fence.
(2) Med-USA (Cherry Pie x Candyland)... also plan on double-planting... had 2 clones of this I picked up last summer that I picked up mid-July and put in 20 gallon smart pots for fun and just let them go natural... each 20 gallon yielded a HP and the smoke ended up being my absolute favorite smoke all winter and it was a sad day last month when I rolled my last doobie... I'm thinking I should double plant only b/c I just don't see it as having tree or super bush capability, but maybe I'm wrong. Also, have a bunch in 15 gallon smarties already in light dep.

(3) Hindu Skunk (Got this cut from same friend the DOG came from and she's a beast... the "mother" I used over the winter only had maybe 15 cuts in all taken from her and is now in light dep in a 65 gallon smartie and it's looking like the carport-style greenhouses I use might not be enough to contain her for the next 2 months, so I can't wait to see how she fairs full term in the big pots... last couple years I watched my buddy pull 5+ off all his and he's a top one time only kind of guy and not much else in the way of LST-ing or super cropping like I tend to be with certain strains that will take to it.
So, that's the tentative plan... I've got quite a few "extras" that could go in those last 6 that I was planning on putting BD in come 2 weeks from now... (3) Candyland (anyone have good results from this? She seems like a slow vegging plant so far and I've got 6 that have been outside since May 1st with supp. lighting and will be getting tarped starting on June 1st, but nothing about them has really impressed me so far... (3) Super Sour Diesel... I grew out a SSD a couple years ago that was a SSH x SD, but this one is apparently an OG Kush and Diesel Hybrid according to the people from King Klone who no longer have it listed on their site... a few Green Ribbons and a few more Atomic NL....
I'm just not sure... as sick of BD as I am it is undoubtedly an excellent "insurance policy" when it comes to meeting bottom lines for production. I have a DIY bubble cloner with 36 spaces... just filled it up a couple nights ago with (12) Blue Dreams, (12) D.O.G and (12) Blue Dragon GT... I had been having trouble getting the GT to root earlier in the year and just sort of stopped taking cuts and have let the "mother" have a nice healthy 2 months of rest and relaxation and think that these 12 should have no problem rooting. I'm thinking I could double plant those 12 clones in the last 6 as I know for certain they won't fill out a 300 gallon before they're ready to chop at the end of September. I love the smoke and the bud has excellent bag appeal or I could just do 6 more D.O.G's, but it being my first year with the strain I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket at this particular spot should it not turn out to be the cash-cropping, good yielding, fruity smelling wonder-bud that I have heard claimed...
Any help making up my mind for me would be greatly appreciated...

I also have a LOT of seeds startsed beginning of Aril just transplanted from the bigger sized Jiffy Pots and into 3-5 gallon bags that I was going to run out indoors this summer and find a few males worth keeping for some pollen chucking this winter along with finding a few nice phenos with mother potential... Agent Orange, Dairy Queen, Chernobyl, Apollo-13 BX and Vortex from TGA... 78' LA OG Affie and Black Lime Reserve from Afficionado... a bunch of different Deep Chunk crosses from Equilibrium... something called Colombian Thunder Funk from NorStar out of Sonoma... and something from White Rabbit (???) which is 707 Headband x Jedi Kush... I've given thought to transplanting 3-4 into the remaining 6 pots at this garden and then removing males as they show up... it's just with my luck I'll hve at least 2 holes that turn out all males and/or a hermie that I manage to miss until it's too late.

I meant for perimeter fencing of the garden site to deter deer and rodents. I know T-posts and metal wire are probably best, but seems this flimsy plastic deer netting stuff gets pretty good reviews online. Even a very light-duty stake should hold the netting up sufficiently, through wind and all.
At first glance I'd think the deer would laugh and easily just walk right through it, but supposedly deer don't like to go into or jump over anything they're not too sure of, including this netting material. Ideally installed at an angle to make it difficult for them to judge depth.
For the actual plant supports I'll be doing it Butte-style, very similar to what you described.

You know, the longer I grow herb, the more I realize that I've used and incorporated so many of the tips and tricks my grandmother taught me out in her 1/2 acre garden back when I was growing up. Things like tilling some garlic powder into the top layer of soil, or planting garlic to deter pests... whenever we were done cleaning the fish we had caught to take the 5-gallong bucket of fish head and gut to bury somewhere out in the garden patch.
But the best trick I learned, and I've heard lots of people say and even read that this doesn't work, but I've never had a deer go to town on my buds or veggies and neither did mema.... buy a large pack of original Irish Spring bar soap and drop them down into a pair of leggings and then knot them around whatever fence posts you end up going with... that and a good dog tend to keep the deer away for me. However, I do still normally put up a bamboo fence perimeter or wire fencing at the least.

She's a yielder when/if you get your soil right.

here's how the light dep plants are doing here, these plants have been grown fairly cheap, didn't buy anything other than the stuf to mix the initial soil and a bottle of ful-power and agsil. water, compost tea, sprouted seed teas, plant meal based teas.
planted the full season about two weeks ago, waiting for the pump to arrive for the drip system

To me, this forum is a great place to gather information on various techniques to grow large plants, hence the name of the thread. No one persons opinion is better than another. The keen individual will disseminate all the information given here and use what is best for them. There are many ways to grow a plant, and one may be better than another. That is for you to decide. I greatly appreciate all who post here and I have learned a lot from all of you. So please keep posting your "Snake Oil", Witches Brew" and other formulas including using nothing but organic soil to grow these large plants. The information given here is mostly informative, sometimes funny, and at other times borderline ridiculous. As in the sale of property, Caveat Emptor, Let The Buyer Beware, or in this scenario, Let The Reader Beware. Don't Worry, Be Happy.

Is it true if i rail a line of neem cake the bugs will leave my dread? Twist OG/GG4/OGMANGO are 2 ft tall and leaving five gallons into the cedar beds, fairly soon. Hope all the good ppl are off to a nice start!

The analogy to Advanced Nutrients only makes sense in terms of number of things available to buy. The reason it's not fitting is because the bottled liquid ferts are basically just different ratios of the important things in their salt form. Think about how many different bloom boosters out there that are just X amount of mono potassium phosphate mixed into water. Dump that in your soil at the rate Advanced Nutrients wants you to and you're going to turn your grow into a barely biological hydro system. Why not do that? Quality. Industrial salt agriculture is a big problem and its a good thing that cannabis growers are getting away from it so please don't get at each others necks!
Don't get me wrong, I'm all about growing on a budget, but Tainio microbes and products from AEA are most certainly not snake oil. These microbial products are cheap considering the coverage you get out of them and they remain in the soil.
