Air con in the UK

Just out of interest, it would be cool if those with a/c told us how big a unit they use for how many K of lighting.

most of those split air cons are only 10, 000 btu anyway. some of the portables are definitely getting better. the one Ive been looking at is 12,000 btu, cools a room up to 30mtr sq, a+ energy saving rating, under 50 decibels so its quieter than an extraction fan.

I was thinking it might raise suspicion as well but then it could be used for house and general ailments in children or adults needing certain conditions in their rooms / houses. Most suspicion comes from the growers as we know why we are using it but most people might just think "snooty gits can afford aircon lucky barstewards". lol How many people have ceiling fans trying to cool them down and wish they had a/c? Guess you could paint the outside units stealth black and hang a sign on saying nothing to see here folks. ;)

I kinda agree to a point. but for example, say that people down your road had smelled weed near your house and shrugged it off and thought nothing of it.. when you start adding in other variables that might draw attention to you its not always worth the risk. it all depends on your locals as well. some are nosey bastards.
stealth is key I think.

^^^ That's a good point. Then you've got the demographic of the area or even the particular street too. In a well to do part of a city, or semi in leafy suburbia it might not raise any eyebrows. A run down council house or Van hoogstraaten rental on some "Benefit street" is a different story.

Just an FYI for anyone considering running a portable AC unit. I'm not in the UK, South US and even with central AC I run a portable in my room. Mine just crapped out with a heatwave we had last week. It was almost as loud as a window banger, but is was 6 or 7 years old. New one I got, 12000btu for USD$299 (less than my old one that was 9Kbtu), runs so much quieter-about 50-55dB. Also, no bucket of water to empty, it sprays water on the condenser that is then exhaused out as steam/vapor. After a week of 90F plus days, no signs of water leaks.

I don't run the exhaust out the window. Instead I run it out the ceiling of the closed in the room right beside my filter/light exhaust. I attatch insulated ducting directly to the discharge vent on the unit to a 6" flange I put in the ceiling. That way the AC doesn't have to cool the heat that radiates out of the supplied plastic hose, which can add quite a bit of heat back into the room-exactly what I'm am trying to get rid of.

One other suggestion, these units are designed to operate with a short exhaust hose and extending the length to exhaust to reach the ceiling can make it harder to push that hot air up and out, which can cause the AC to be less efficient and burn out quicker. So, I put a simple 6" duct booster fan at the end of the ducting to help push the hot exhaust up into the attic.

Keep It Cool!!

you get all different types of areas. in the town I live in, theres many areas which are quite snobby and the neighbours are always curtain twitching and seeing what everyone else is up to. It wouldn't take much to get the police called on you because everyone is so fucking nosey.

hmm 3 portable aircons later and ive found every single one is way to noisy unless you grow in a warehouse or nowhere near humanity. plus all the brands I tried were good, well researched etc and pretty expensive. im nearly given up on the idea of growing in summer. im thinking a split system may be the last option.

I think for the 3 days of summer we have here air con might not be worth it I might just open a window !

yup its very wasteful by the looks of it. and to be honest if you are running that many lamps in a big room, you would be better off having a split air con system for hot weather and good quality oil radiators for the night/cold weather.

I thought the idea was to run it in and out of a res with a water chiller in the res it's like instead of the plants battling the heat the machinery is instead. Could be wrong buut I know that how the coolgen runs so I'm assuming this is similar.

Naah mate, this is made to be hooked up to the supply and run to waste. These things are very popular in Canada.

I still think those ice box things from the states, with either a massive res or a chiller would do the trick.

This looks epic, I think i'm gonna invest. How easy is it to install?

edit - just need a water inlet and outlet
