Planning my 1st SOG (any help?)

Sunzi

Hi everybody, I'm planning to start my 1st SOG grow in around 1 month time, but I want to plan everything in advance, and make sure I do it the right way!

The equipment:

1,2 x 1,2 x 2m tent
250W MH for Veg
600W HPS for Bloom
Dual Speed TT 5" extractor
5" carbon filter
1 small fan + 1 big fan

I'm thinking about the following strains:

Moby Dick
Silver Haze
Green Poison

One of my doubts is: Should I put 20 x 7L plant pots or 12 x 11L plant pots at the end?

What strain is more recommended? Can I combine them or is better to stick to 1 type of strain when doing SOG?

Any other advices/suggestions will be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance :good:

I can fit 16 x 11L pots in this tent, already checked it. So I assume I would be able to fit 20 x 7L easily.
Anyways, the strain is very important also. Somebody recommended to put 12 Moby Dick in 7L pots so they are a bit more spacy.
I really want to hear opinions/suggestions. More information:

For me the more important is yield and taste.

My favorite strain is Silver Haze.

My indoor grower level is: Beginner to Medium.

Cheers! :tiphat:

Better to go from clone than seed. Fit in as many 7L pots as possible.

If going from seed flip at about 4-5 weeks from germination otherwise they'll stretch too much.

Trim away the bottom third of each plant during the first 2 weeks of stretch leaving the main cola and a few lowers. Or top each plant to give two leaders per plant, any more branches and you risk overcrowding it or getting lots of popcorn loose buds. It'll also be easier to water with a space underneath the canopy, and you'll get better airflow.

If they don't all stretch equally after the first 2 weeks try and even out the canopy by raising the shorter plants.

Get a fan blowing just above the canopy to ensure airflow and you're away.

Forgot to mention, veg them in smaller pots (3L), then a week before you're ready to flower them, pot them up into their final 7L pots. As soon as the roots hit the bottom, flip them into flower and they'll stretch adequately to fill the SOG.

Thanks for the advices Piff Rhys Jones! Loads of valuable information to me, I really appreciate it.

In any case, are you talking about a certain strain in particular? Also, do you recommend anything in particular?

I cannot go from clone, as I don't have any clones/mother. So I will go from seed (unless somebody offers me some clones!), but I take your advice.

Looking forward to hear from you more.

Thanks so much! :tiphat:

No worries mate. I love a good SOG. The clones thing is just to ensure uniformity. You'll be fine from seed provided the strain is relatively consistent.

If going from seed you may need to go the feminized route as if you use reg seeds they may not all show sex after 4-5 weeks. If you wait longer to sex them you may risk growing them too big for the SOG.

Have you checked how many 7L pots will fit? This will dictate plant numbers and give you a better idea of how many seeds to run. Also I'd suggest running more seeds than you'll end with as you'll probably get a few runts here and there etc that can be culled before flower.

Strain isn't that vital as long as it isn't a wild stretchy sativa or really low yielding plant.

Yes, I can fit 20 x 6.5L pots (can't find 7L pots!!)... would that be ok?

So what you mean basically is that I should veg like 22-24 just in case, then do a natural selection of 20 before switching to flower?

Thanks :tiphat:

Yeah 6.5L is fine, and yeah I'd say sprout about 25-30 fems if possible then select the strongest and most uniform 20. Some might not germinate and you're bound to get a few runts.

If you were using regular seeds you'd want to be sprouting more like 50-60, which is a bit of a nightmare when they're in 3L pots unsexed at 5 weeks!

Hey Sunzi,

This SOG is asking for some relatively big numbers of plants. This up's the ante on everything, workload and obviously risk.

Have you ever considered running just 6 plants in a SCROG?

Dank Demon has recently posted a 'SCROG Bible' in his thread. Go have a look. Done well, I'd say a SCROG is probably the most efficient way to get bumper yields from smaller numbers of plants.

Just a thought.

Good luck with whatever you decide. :ying:

Was what I was thinking out loud, just 4 plants supper-cropped and then supported with a screen after the 2 week stretch, couple more weeks to veg but it well achive really good results.\

Perfect. I'll do that then... and I will definitely use fems!

Thanks so much dude! :tiphat:

Hey SupaFunk! Indeed... I'm aware of this already :chin:
Thought about it, but I kinda feel more attracted to the SOG, plus I believe a SCROG is more recommended when having a limited space/low light potency, wich is not my case at all...
But I will definitely check it out though :good:

Thank you, same here :tiphat:
