Hazes and Flo outdoors at 44 degrees north

Hello there, people!

I'll use this thread as a grow diary for my 2014 outdoor season.

I'm at 44 degrees north, continental climate. We have hot and dry summer and usually dry autumn. Nice local soil (chernozem), though with pH around 8.0 at my spot, maybe up from the usual 7.5 for the local chernozem due to watering with tap water (of pH 7.7) and dumping too much charcoal 2 years ago. Anyways, despite the high pH, plants grow very well. The books say cannabis likes soil of pH around 6.5 but it seems large plants can grow in 8.0 too. I'm trying to slowly lower the pH with sulfur and a little ferrous suphate. Here's the trunk of a Nirvana's Haze #1 (that's what was written on the pack), grown at exactly the same place in 2012, harvested in the middle of November:

So, this year I'm growing Nirvana's Haze1 again. I love it and even though I've been smoking it non-stop for the last year and a half, I'd like to smoke some more :)
I'm also trying Ace's upgraded version of Haze - Haze x Thai, via a pack of Tropical Mix seeds, late 2012 lot, which according to Dubi at Ace, is mostly Green Haze x Thai and Purple Haze x Thai, F2 & F3.
I'm very interested to see how Oldtimer's Haze x Thai compares to the dutch Haze (coming via Sam the Skunkman and Positronics) on the real sativa playground under the sun. Ace's description says the harvest is in December, which is a bit too late for me, but let's see, I'm not counting on it, just being curious.
I also have 2 seedlings of DJ Short's Flo, which is a strain that I've been eager to try for a long time.

So,
Here are the seedlings, all seeds started on the 12th of March, 14 days ago.
4 regular HxT (out of 4 seeds):

1 feminized Haze1 (out of 2 seeds):

and 2 regular Flos (out of 4 seeds):

They are in 400ml cups with peat, under a total of 200W cool-white (6000K) LEDs. I will not transplant in bigger pots until the plants show their sex. I need only 1 Flo and 2 or 3 HxT's, which along with the 1 Nirvana's Haze will be transplanted outdoors in the end of April.

So far, so good. The seedlings are fine and picking momentum.

Sweet dude! I loved the papaya/haze thread from a few years back! Hope this one is just as good, if not better!

Best vibes on this season!

Thank you for the kind words, people!

I had problems with the soil these weeks.
I've been buying the same local brand of peat mix for a few years and it always worked great for seedlings. I've never had to measure anything, just watered with tap water and plants were green and happy until ready to be transplanted outdoors.
Now the seedlings started off nicely, though 3 of the seeds didn't germinate and the Haze1 and one the Flo seedlings had rotting tips of the cotledones. The more the plants progressed, the less happy they looked and started growing slower and slower. Some spots like being caused by deficiencies appeared. So, I checked the pH of the soil in one of the cups and it was 5.0, the same as the reading of a sample I took straight from the bag with soil. So, pH is way below the advertised 5.5-6.5. I flushed the cups with RO + tap water and the run-off water's readings increased from 4.8-5.2 in the beginning to 5.6-5.8. I also added a little fertilizer with NPK 6-4-4. The plants are now much happier and back to growth. I'll flush HxT #3 once more this evening as it seems to need more of it.

Here they are:

What worries me is that the Haze 1 seedling had some malformations in its initial growth. Like the missing "stipules" (I far as I can see, this is the way these small blades are called) on one side of the nodes. Fortunately, the latest nodes and growth are all fine.

And the Flo's, which seemed happy all the way, despite the pH of 5.1-5.2 in their cups.

Thank you for the wished luck, Husky :) Luck is always needed. Last year I didn't have enough of it and my Zamaldelica tree broke during a storm and died of pythium afterwards. But I'm lucky to have enough stash from 2012's Haze to get me through to 2014's harvest, hehe.

Yesterday, exactly 1 month after starting the seeds, I transplanted all the plants outdoors because they (mostly the Haze x Thais) continued to suffer from some deficiencies, and instead of wondering how to fix the soil, I decided to transplant. They are just starting to pre-flower. I think I can see small male flowers on Flo #2, HxT #1 and HxT #3.

Here are the HxTs before transplant:

And here they are after transplanting:

They all have their soil amended with about 20% peat and 20% vermicompost.

Hi Yoss33,

I see you've got a good start on this season. I'm subscribing to both your threads. I'm giving it a go outside also, at 42 north. I'll try to keep up, but from what I've seen in the past, not many can keep up with your growing skills.

Hope you have a great season,

ThaiBliss

Hehe, thank you, man! I'm a little afraid of receiving compliments, especially after my Zamaldelica tree broke right after getting nominated for POTM last year, heh. Maybe it couldn't withstand the burden of so many people's expectations and broke.
I have to excuse myself, because by subscribing to both threads, you'll read some texts twice - I don't have the feel to write a lot lately, and the progress updates in both threads will be mostly the same copy-pasted posts. With Flo being present only here, and Nirvana's Haze having thumbnailed images in Ace's thread (I think that's a fair way to have it there).

Here's the progress update:

Weather was mostly cloudy, with low temps in the mornings (maybe even frosts at the site). So not much progress, the old damaged leaves of the HxT's are even worse, but the growing tips look healthy and the plants have increased in size.
Preflowers of all plants are still too small.
Nirvana's Haze 1 was attacked by broad mites and looks horrible. So this evening I sprayed all the plants with a pyrethroid solution. I read that the broad mite saliva contains toxins to the plant. Hopefully, the Haze will overcome the stress and toxins.

I threw some clover seeds around the plants, to keep up with the current mulching fashion, hehe. Thanks to the rains, many clovers have sprouted.

The leaves, especially at the tips, curling and pale from the broad mite damage:

The Flo's continue to be the happiest of all:

They have very undeveloped branches, seem to be going very columnar.

Hello, people! Here's the update:

All plants doing fine, with only the Haze 1 still suffering from the broad mite damage, but its tops look green and not deformed, so I guess it will soon outgrow the problem.
I don't know how much of a problem it is, but there's some mole digging molehills around the HxTs. Last week I destroyed with foot a molehill next to HxT #1 and yesterday there was a new molehill between HxT #2 and HxT #4 (you can see the tramped hill on the photos). I hope this mole will not make to much damage to the HxTs' roots before giving up digging at that place.

Hi, EastCoastHaze! Good luck during the season!

Here's the weekly update:

Since the Haze 1 was still struggling to recover, a week ago I replaced it with HxT #4, which was and still is the only plant with female pre-flowers. The other 3 HxTs seem like bringing out small male pre-flowers.
The plants have been chewed by critters and hit by a hailstorm which made some damage on HxT #3's and Flos' fatter leaves. The thin-leaved Hazes seem unaffected.

Here are the 3 HxTs, together with the Haze 1 at HxT #4's place, which I'll soon discard if not improving:

And HxT #4 at its new place. It's smaller than the other 3 HxTs because of lost roots during the transplant, but I guess it will soon catch up at the better place:
