Watts needed for cloning?

Finally time to sit down and master the art of cloning. I've decided to go with a fog cloner for ease of use. I already have a bunch of fog units sitting around and this cuts down on a water pump, sprayers, and bars, etc...

I'm making a small guy, for only 6 clones at the moment. Using a 6.5qt container I got at the store last night that is deep instead of wide, perfect for my application. When looking at lighting options I saw an LED bar for $16. 3 watts, 175 lumens (which doesn't mean much), 13 LEDs and 22,000 hours of lighting. Is this enough? I know clones don't require much lighting. I like the LEDs over the CFLs so I don't have to worry about heat.

I had so many fog failures that I turned away

You don't want water temp above 80*s, or below 70*s, with 75-78 being the sweet spot

By far the simplest, easiest, and highest success rate comes from

a bubbler

Easy to DIY

Doesn't need to be deep

lots of small totes to choose from

Use a minimum 2 stone air pump, the more lpm the better

I use 4 stones off a 4 head AP

Wattage?

Not much 20-30w will do. No more than 60

Use a WW LED bulb/s which promotes root development

Some LED Daylight bulbs will work too

Cree makes good DL/WW; avail at HD

Have found they need a lot less than you might first think for rooting , pretty much any source is good enough.
Find a single daylight spectrum 20 watt CFL is good for two square feet of cloners , dead cheap and not much heat to bother about , just enough to stop them yellowing during the week or so they take.

Too high a light level and they take a few days longer by experiment with the same clone.

Hey PetFlora,

How well do those LED bulb work? I have seen them and was interested, foe clone and veg.
I see they have a assortment of colors and watts what works best?

when cloning in bubbling water do you add anything like super thrive? i also have powder and was thinking on using that and a weak mix of the thrive in the water.

Sry about all the ?'s just want to get it right

thanks, hick

I've tried several bubbler units and they never worked for me, I'm sure it was due to other issues but... I want to use foggers because I have like 12 sitting around not being used and I had success with the one and only time I tried a fog cut.

Without calculating it and experimenting.. Id recon that about 20 watts per cu. ft. of cloning space would suffice.

Hola, fellow islander ;)

i prefer cloning under a 1k lamp, but that's only because i like strong vigorous growth.

Prune,
if you do a simple side by side with the same clone I think you will find that those under a lower light level , say 20 watts per foot , will actually root a little faster than under the higher level.
Once they have roots they can make full use of as much as you can give , within reason.

Try it if you get a chance , for the interest.

rapid rooters, humidity dome, green light rooting hormone, water, high kelvin rating CFL, temps from 75-78*+ high humidity.

or... a cup of water....and a cutting.

I just use a 13 watt cfl in the yellow spectrum.I can raise 20 clones in a humidity dome under one 13w in small rockwool cubes.100% success..small cfl, humidity dome, clonex, warm temps.Thats it!

Scissors or a razor, water, humidity dome, take root cloning powder, perlite n a plant cell tray packed tight, a mother plant to take cuts from, and a shop light... Temps set to 75-80 degrees... I know some shyt is hard to get depending on where ur from and whats available... And also there's plenty of threads here on I.C for cloning... I'm sure if u just read some threads here you will find a style to ur like'n and do just fine... Anyway, thats what works for me... Good luck and take it easy... -F.S

I know I'm a stubborn person but I give in, lol. My water temps are too high. Fog is 95F and water is 101F. I could make things over-complicated just to make a fog cloner work just because the fog produces amazing roots (the best I've ever seen) but I'm not.

Just bought a 4 head AP, 4 large air stones (all they had, he gave them to me at the medium size price, sunleaves heavy duty stones). The pump puts out 8 lpm, 5 watts. In a 6.5qt container, this is going to create tons of bubbles lol. I've seen people put the plant tip in the water and just above the water. Which way would you suggest? I'd imagine with that much air in such a confined area that in the water wouldn't hurt the clone?
