Breaking News: Tony Bower (Mullaway)given twelve months jail!

Seems Tony is in trouble again:
Medical marijuana: Couple fears for daughter after supplier charged

Mia Mia parents Cheri and David O'Connell fear their daughter 'will die' if the supply of medical cannabis she relies on to control her severe epilepsy is stopped.

The couple's daughter Tara, 8, has Dravet Syndrome and suffered more than 100 life-threatening seizures a day before she started taking medical cannabis in 2012.

She has not had a seizure since.

But the man who supplies the cannabis to the family, Tony Bower of Mulaways Medical Cannabis, has been arrested and will face a NSW court on drug trafficking charges on May 28.

Ms O'Connell said the family had enough supplies to last them for a few months but if Mr Bower was jailed for longer the family would find themselves in a dire situation.

"If he's jailed for two years then that's it: game over, Tara will die," Ms O'Connell said.

"I'm so angry."

"We can't really make any plans anymore; we don't know what the future holds.''

Mulaways Medical Cannabis is the only registered medical cannabis company in Australia and Ms O'Connell said she didn't want to get the drug from an underground supplier.

Ms O'Connell said she wanted to continue giving Tara the medicine that had been so effective in treating her severe epilepsy.

She said that before using the cannabis, Tara was suffering up to 200 seizures a day.

In 2012 Tara was resuscitated eight times and doctors warned that she may not live long past her seventh birthday, and shortly after this the O'Connells starting treating Tara with medical cannabis, as a last resort.

The results were outstanding.

Child Neurology doctor Lindsay Smith wrote of Tara’s improvement that it was “nothing short of miraculous”.

Since taking the cannabis Tara hasn't suffered one seizure and her parents have been given their lives back.

Ms O'Connell can now take Tara out in public - something she couldn't do previously - and Tara, who is also intellectually impaired, now goes to school part-time.

Ms O'Conell said she knew of hundreds of other families who were using medical marijuana and urged the Therapeutic Goods Administration to conduct medical trials examining its effectiveness.

She said that if scientific research proved that medical cannabis was effective, state governments would be much more likely to legalise its cultivation.

Currently, it is illegal to grow or possess cannabis in all states of Australia and to test the effectiveness of medical cannabis would require people to break the law to grow it: a Catch-22 situation.

A spokeswoman for the TGA said the decriminalisation of cannabis was an option that the state and territory governments could pursue.

May 28th 2014?

I assume so? Article is dated 3/5/14. I hadn't heard he'd been busted, apart from last year.

It would be terrible if he ended up in jail, especially for the patient mentioned in the article.

Medical Cannabis Trial Adjourned.
June 2, 2014

Politician Advocates Decriminalisation.
The man who supplies medical marijuana to Mia Mia child Tara O'Connell, 8, has had his court trial adjourned.

Tony Bower, who owns Mullaways Medical Cannabis, faced a New South Wales court on May 28 charged under the Drugs Misuse and Trafficking Act.

His case was adjourned for three months.

Cheri O'Connell, whose daughter has a severe form of epilepsy and relies on medical cannabis to survive, said she was pleased Mr Bower wasn't jailed.

But she was concerned Mr Bower would face court again in three months.

She was worried about Mr Bower's other customers, who had reduced their use of marijuana in anticipation of Mr Bower being jailed, she said.

"We want to get (medical marijuana) legalised," she said.

"I know people who are on it who are reducing doses - I'm not prepared to do that."

The issue of medical marijuana has been taken up by NSW MP Kevin Anderson, who last week announced he was preparing a private member's bill that would decriminalise medical marijuana in the state.

The bill was a "step in the right direction", Mrs O'Connell said, but she was disappointed with Mr Anderson's push to decriminalise cannabis specifically for people who were "terminally" ill.

"How terminal is terminal?" Mrs O'Connell said. "For me it's very disappointing because of the word terminal.

"It's not going to help the majority of epilepsy patients."

Mr Bower said the word "terminal" should not be included in the bill.

"How do you prove if it's terminal?" he said.

"(Doctors) can't even tell you what a lot of diseases are so how can you determine whether it's terminal or not?"

Tara O'Connell has Dravet Syndrome and suffered more than 200 life-threatening seizures a day before she started taking medical cannabis in 2012.

She has not had a seizure since.

Mia Mia is a small town in Central Victoria but Mullaways Medical Cannabis is based in NSW.

It is noteworthy that the magistrate who sentenced Mr Bower, Wayne Evans, is the first NSW policeman to have risen to the position. He has been the local magistrate since 1997.

That explains alot.

This total dope-hating ^#$#^&%^*#^@^ was the judge at a friends court case.

It was no secret that he had it in for my mate as soon as he appeared. But the hilarious part came when he got off because the police prosecutors stuffed up.

Judge Evans was going off at the police prosecutor, it really was funny....

Kinda like Harold of "Neighbours", jowls flying.... hahahahah.

Lets be very clear on one thing.. and this is in no way a negative report on the Haslams..

you have a retired cop buying cannabis for his terminally ill son... and the cheif of police in that town supports it.. in effect turning a blind eye to the law in order for the son of a former colleague to live as close to a normal life as possible...
Now we have a man thrown in jail for producing a product with little top no pscycoactive ingredient and helping everyday families who's kids suffer from epilepsy and we make him rot in jail for 12 months..

double standards much?

this is a disgrace... the law is the law...its not pick and choose on sympathy grounds... the cops who were in charge of taking this man down should go and spend some time with the families of these kids who have seizures every hour....

what a disgrace to be an Australian

the guy is a giant buffoon and is against legalisation despite "god" creating it... Tony knows best...

this buffon got elected due to the dumbing down of Australians.. the aging conservative population and 3 word fear campain slogans....whether you like Julia or not,,, did we really stopp so low as to have "ditch the bitch" at a liberal rally... lowest common denominator!!!

people believe that 4,000 boat people arriving are illegal... they arent... yet the 10,000 that arrive by plane each year disappear are never mentioned... and lets not forget... climate change according to Tony climate cahgne is going from spring to summer to autumn and winter!!!

Now this fraud band they promised will have a report ready just before next election and lets not forget that Soapy Brandis with his orders from Rupert are trying to censor the internet due to people downloading programs.... wonder who that will hurt the most... fast internet and programs from he net... Rupert and FOXTEL... but we deserve everything we get for having morons vote these pricks in...

Today's court result was not the best.
The judges comments make him sound like a dinosaur.
Hopefully the upcoming marches may turn the spotlight on the absurdity of the situation.
