Pre-98, what exactly does that mean?

I have been seeing more than a few strains that have the title, "Pre-98" to them. I was just wondering what exactly this was referring to. It makes me think that there was like some nuclear event the occurred and changed the plant irrevocably after the year 1998. (Just kidding on that one )

It just got my curiosity and I thought I'd ask and see what everyone thought.

It's like in the 90s Sensi Seeds had great work but after that it all went to shit. So pre 98 means it's the version before 98. Some companies turned into McDonald's after certain dates. Lots of lies all over the place in the name of money.

'98 seems close to the year that strains started getting watered down and just not as good...

The passage of Prop215 in California in 1996, started a strain cross frenzy, without anyone knowing what they were really doing...

Pe 98 Kryptonite, B1, J1(Original Ed strain), CoOp, Sweet 1, Blue Dot, XXX and few other Bay Area Elites were lost around this point...

The way it was explained to me was as follows:

In 1998, apparently there was legislation that limited the number of plants that Breeders were able to grow. It was explained to me that prior to 1998, Breeders could run 10's of thousands of plants and obviously get better selections. Post-'98, apparently the number of plants were severely limited, thus a limnited selection of prospective males/females.

Not sure how accurate that is. I never looked it up. but it seems plausible to me.

@Elements001: All of the above, though
something I've also noticed is 'pre-98' is
slapped on a lot of pre-98 Bubba hybrids
in the way '99' is used on cindy crosses..

Well I'm not sure about you, but I don't want to water 10.000 of anything...or 5000, or 1000... so to me there might be another story

from what i've gathered before 98 the recipes used in these strains were a known mother and father. after that the parents changed and the resulting offspring isnt the same.

for instance lets say (im making shit up here) bubba pre98 was ogkx(dj's)blueberry.
after 98 it was ?ogk?x(a)blueberry

so pre98 would be the legit bubba, and anything else is a knockoff.

some of you have it right, some of you have some mis-information, this is how I see it

back them the ones ruling the show were the ducth banks, and up until them they could do selection with +1000 plants, so they were really good

but them the law change and they could not do that massive selections any more, and they started living of rents, publicity and past fame... and quality when shit (think Serious, Samargatha, GHS... even Sensi)

the 90s where the golden years for genetic selecction, I would say

Warped, there is not another story, and yes watering 1000 plants was the way to get the best possible mun and dad

Stihgnobevoli, after the 90s with the fem seeds, anyone could do seeds with just a few elite clones, so lots of banks copying genetics came up. Also no some many baks where around and with no so many strain each, so pretty easy to follow the genetics, since them suddenly there are hundreds of banks and with lots of strains each, how the hell is that possible?? how many parentals this people have? and how many years have the work that strains?

PD. right now the pre-whatever is bollocks as people is using it because the hype, seens that anything pre-something is the bussines. In Spain we have lots of pre-? elite clones that no-one knew about a couple of years ago, go figure!

A lot of interesting theories people but pre'98 is nothing more than a title for distinction, like '82 World Champs.

And as for Cinderella 99, the 99 is just part of the name, like Mark V, Mark VI, etc.

the 99 in cindy actually refers to the generation. 99% of the plants are going to breed true to the mom. cindy 91, cindy 87, princess 75...

pre-98 means before 1998.

99 in C99 refers to 99% of the genetics from the triple backcross bros grimm did. before that it was c88 c75 and c50

Cut in outdoor crops being used due to legislation, thus lower selection is how I understood it myself .

I remember seeing something from Dronker's Cannabis Castle and they showed the grow rooms...20 plants of each tops. This was 2004 or so.
So the pre98 prefix must have something to do with that Dutch law

Pre-98???

you buy two packs, 20 seeds, only 3 actually germinate.

you complain to the vendor who then explains to you that that would be most of the risk in buying 16 year old seeds.......
