I recently tried to buy an unvented Sun Systems Blockbuster and was surprised to hear that they are no longer making the blockbuster and it is being replaced by the Irradiator.

There are still a lot of blockbusters in the channel (vented models mostly) but when that is gone, there will be no more.

Apparently, Sunlight Supply was the only one of the major vendors still making their hoods in the US and the new line is made overseas.

I believe the Super Sun 2 is still made in the US. Will try to find out.

The Irradiator was made to compete with the HydroFarm Radiant reflector, which is one of the most popular on the market.

It seems to have some design enhancements over the blockbuster. It is square like the blockbuster, but a little smaller, allowing it to fit in 24 inch boxes that means more fit on a palate and shipping is significantly cheaper. The lamp socket is mounted differently to better support the weight of the bulb.

They can be had pretty cheap too if you shop around.

So, Irradiator will soon replace Blockbuster if this matters to you.

Now, who will take the time to put these 2 hoods on the grid?
(I don't believe anyone ever did Blockbuster tests in this thread.)

I am setting up a 4x8 tent with 2 600 watt lights.
I was wondering if the Super Sun 2s are still considered the best after all this time? Or should I go with something else?

This is my first grow, so I am currently try to absorb a ton of info and trying to make sure I try to get things off on the right foot and not waste money in the long run by buyig crap.

Hey guys, has anyone used the sunlight supply ac/de 1000w syste? I like how the reflector is setup so you don't cool the bulb directly. I don't know if it's a gimmick but it sounds nice. It also says it puts out more umoles/sq.m. There is a YouTube video of someone saying you can still cool it with the glass off to maximize light intensity. Il see if I can find it and post it up.

We have the OG hoods and they work kind of like that, with or without glass. The DE needs to stay hot but not sure if maybe these venturi types maybe remove some heat without cooling the lamp so much?

Do your og reflectors with glass off cool themselves the same compared to glass on. With 9ft ceilings this style should allow me to keep everything cool without threat of losing intensity of light

Sorry I'm kind of hit and run around here. They definitely put more heat into the canopy without the glass on, although a larger inline might help. I only have 4 in a sealed veg room, and air is removed through two open ends (one 8" maxfan with a Y, 2 hoods on each leg).

Looking forward to those test results with the air-cooled DE lamps.

Ya I'm looking forward to running these lights. Bulbs will most likely be ushio, because of availability. Not sure what exhaust fans I'll be going with, because I'm setting up under co state regs, I have to purchase certified equipment. Either way cooling shouldn't be an issue.

I run the AC/DE hoods. The design does not move air over the bulb. The bulb must run at a certain temperature in order to reach maximum potential.

They air moves through a chamber and heat is exchanged by moving air over the aluminum reflector.

Yes, these hoods are bad ass. You really can't compare them to traditional hoods because its an entirely different type of bulb vs the traditional "screw" in. I like that I don't have bulb sag due to them being attached at both ends.

Have people seen any test where there would be (as reference point) be par values WITHOUT any reflector? (or perhaps with just the reflective surface of the tent)
