Smoking marijuana during cocktail hour could prevent hard drinkers from developing liver disease.

A recent study finds that specific cannabinoids have the ability to act as a shield against the build-up of fat on the liver, which leads to serious conditions like cirrhosis.

Researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York recently published their discovery in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine, which states that cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychoactive compound in marijuana, has the capacity to protect the liver from binge drinking by blocking the development of fat around the organ.

In the study, laboratory mice were dosed with CBD prior to being injected with ethanol twice a day for five days. During this time, researchers found significant evidence to suggest that the CBD compound could one day serve as a beneficial treatment for individuals at high risk for liver disease.

“We evaluated whether cannabidiol, which has been reported to function as an antioxidant, can protect the liver from alcohol-generated oxidative stress-induced steatosis. Cannabidiol can prevent acute alcohol-induced liver steatosis in mice, possibly by preventing the increase in stress and the activation of the JNK MAPK pathway,” according to the study.

Researchers say this study could function as a blueprint for the development of medicine to prevent liver disease. In addition, researchers added that past studies have indicated that cannabidiol may also be beneficial to the reduction of alcohol-induced brain damage.

I don't think weed is a cure for alcoholism either. The findings from this study might still be important. Maybe people who occasionally drink too much would be better off if they got high too. You can't tell for sure with an animal study like this. Human studies with cannabis aren't legal yet in most places.

I've known a couple people who've switched from drinking every night to getting high every night. You have to want to quit drinking for it to work, obviously.

the active substance that is supposed to prevent fat from adhering to the liver is CBD; most of us use cannabis that is very low on CBD, thus not reaching the adequate doses for its therapeutic activation, for lack of a better term.

in short, it does not matter how much of a drinker you are and how much herb you smoke, you won't see the potential effects on the well being on your liver as you are using an inadequate cultivar.

having said that, a little reading comprehension is in order for some of you.

peace

I'm a drinker too. There have been a couple times in my life where I went through a phase of drinking too much. Way too much. Specifically when I was a teenager and when I got divorced a few years ago. I don't want to quit drinking myself, since I love beer and it doesn't hurt in moderation. I know it's not easy for everyone to drink in moderation.

It looks like this study was about how CBD might prevent some of the damage caused by alcohol. I wouldn't be surprised if THC had the same benefits. I just tend to get excited about new studies into the beneficial effects of my favorite plant.
