Night Cycle Temperature Differential

What happens when heat at night is greater than that of the day?

On volcanic Islands?
Panic!

Sorry, jus' hadda. :)

What's worse, I don't have that answer.

My lights come on at 4:20 pm.
They run until 12:30 pm. then off for the heat of the day.
So, they get a little dip at night, about 10 degrees F. max.
Does it affect them?
Can't tell, only have one cabinet.
But they seem happy.

Aloha,

I am currently in my first grow, and I live in a region that has wide natural temperature differentials in the fall/winter/spring. Left alone, my indoor grow tent (in my basement) had a differential of about 20 degrees F. The effect was a severe stunting of growth. I don't know about other strains but Buddha Haze does not like such a swing and prefers warmer average temperatures. When it drops too low, the plant shuts down to protect itself. Once I added a heater, the differential dropped to 10 degrees F and the increase in growth was HUGE!

supposedly - stretching slows when night is hotter than day(+/- 5f)

see cold area dump an hour before lights on(+/- 10f)

As long as the temps stay in the optimal range youre golden.Humidity being a controlling factor. If youre lights on temp is 70 and youre lights off temp is 80 youre okay.

Dial in the environment and make it whatever temp you want whenever. INSULATION pays off im not sure of the size of the grow.Since building my room in the outdoor shed the temp outside can be 48 and still be 75 inside the building. When the temp swings during the day i can adjust the ac or exhaust and intake fan to the temp i want.Humidity is another thing to consider.Hope this helps.

What I did was put a temperature controlled outlet in my grow tent, connected to an external oil-based heater outside the tent, but in the closet. Since the inline fan creates negative pressure, it draws in the warm air, keeping the tent at no more than a 10 degree differential.

I employed a portable dehumidifier within the room to combat condensation and it functions equally as well as a heater. I have installed insulation matting to redirect the heat to not directly contact the grow sites and better disperse to not create hot spots.

I'm saving significant energy/resources while improving temperature and humidity conditions. The lights off is equivalent to lights on. I have just never seen/heard of reports regarding greater temperatures presented at night.

Also with higher temperatures the VPD @ given humidity than lower temperature and some have stated that helps with mold prevention.

I already know of temperature differentials and conventional wisdom, but curious about this specific scenario.

Thanks

this^^^

it has been called 'the dif'... they use the idea w poinsettias & the like... shorter, stalkier plants w tighter nodal spacing. raise temps at night by 8* over day temps. an alternative to the all night high temps is a 'cold air dump', also to limit stretch. less conventional wisdom w these ideas... not too many weed growers have tried/posted on it.

You get condensation which in turn leads to mold then DOOM, always have a fan and vent!

exact opposite happens... you raise temps = lowering rh values. if heating right before lights drop out, then u never get a drop in temps which equals a rise in rh. warmer nights really helps control mold germination, which temp drops is a trigger for. ;-)

I have done this with Tahoe OG. It did diminish the stretch by about 30%. I did it in the summer. Lights out was 6am so I turn the thermostat up so the AC would not turn on.

I was always under the impression that the closer you keep your temps at night to what they are in day just slightly cooler an your plants will have less node spacing an stack better

As long as it doesn't get to hot, but strange that you would get hotter with the lights off. Beware of hermies if you go above 90f. You may get less stretch but I doubt that if you are under 75f. I usually try to run at 70f or lower then it drops -15 tp -20f. Let us know if you find it does keep for tighter internodes.
