ive had a trouble sleeping for about 10-15 years (starting in my late high school days, im now in my early 30's) and up until recently i had been able to deal with it fairly successfully with cannabis and benadryl. i recently found out my fiance is pregnant and i couldnt be happier but i have so much stuff running through my mind about the future. when i try to go to bed i just lay there unable to flip off the switch so to speak. im gonna keep this first post short because im extremely tired but any advice would be greatly appreciated. i have also been using up to 10mg melatonin with no noticeble effect. def dosnt help me fall asleep. the best thing that has worked for me is edibles but im super low on butter so after tonight that wont be an option for another few weeks. i also meditate and do yoga and breathing excercises and eat very healthily. so, from my end it seems like im doing things right... i think its fair to assume the baby on the way has a large impact on me. even though i am happy about it subconsciously im still stresses because its a major change in my life. i do have a dr appt tomorrow to address this sleeplessness.. again any advise on that front (as far as what has worked for you in the past, whether it be medication, herbal, holistic or any other experiences that you may have that worked for you. those of you who have or are on medications or herbal supplements, what works for you?) i have tried ambien in the past but it didnt work and i just stuck with the benedryl. (which im taking about 150 mg a night before bed) seems like a lot. i have a wide variey of elite genetics both sativa and indica dominate and nothing seems to be helping. unfortunately im running low on flowers too (gave too much away) and will probably run out before harvest. so that kinda stresses me out to, lol... thanks everyone!

Edibles and tinctures can be great if you have them. They work better for me when I have lots of sober time and don't take them every night of the week.

Most of the pharmaceuticals suck. Ambien works for me for a short time, then I get crazy side effects like eating tons of food and not remembering it. Or texting people I haven't talked to in years at 3 am. Some others like lunesta worked at first but led to tolerance / dependence and withdrawal when I quit.

Benadryl can help like you said. It just doesn't work for me if it's every night. Taurine (doses up to 10 grams) can help a lot if you're new to it. Phenibut can help in the short term, and it's sold at supplement shops legally. It's just really addictive if you use it every night. GABA is worth trying as a supplement. Magnesium, taurine, a few other things too. Melatonin can help a little, but for me it's better in combination with something else.

Need to find some more time in the day to burn off some energy :). Your mind is going a million miles an hour but your body is isn't so whats happening is your exhausted mentally and need to get the body to the same state. I was having the same problem for awhile until my friend returned from the usmc :)

A heavy indica and Xanax 1mg can work well on the short term but most people develop tolerance. Going to bed on an empty stomach will reduce sleep in most people, a light snack about 1hr before bedtime can be helpful and try choosing foods rich in tryptophan (precursor for melatonine) like dairy products and bananas. No exercising in the evening, same goes for hot baths, showers and sauna. Aerobic exercising earlier in the day can be helpful. Lot´s of tricks in the bag, just start trying them out. White Rhino nocks me out when used as a tincture.

ill just say this.. START PHARMAS and you will never sleep without them again.. atleast thats how it was for me.. i need to literally get up even after a full 8 hour shit of work.. and go for a 3-5 mile walk.. to get myself tired enough to sleep.. and now.. most days.. we wake up at 5-6 .. and go for a 3-5 mile in the morning.. then go to work.. then 3-5 mile at night.. and then work on the grow.. and i sleep soo much better.. the meditating and breathing exercises work great also.. i take capsules of decarbed honey oil also if i really cant fall asleep.. but still im smoking all day..and i just cant sleep long period of time.. its wierd.

so i went to my dr appt this am after another sleepless night. (i think i finally fell asleep about 3 hours before i had to get up.. she offered me ambien but i declined because i think cannabis (especially edibles eaten about 1.5 hours before bed) is effective and i didnt want to go down the road of medications just yet. she also told me not to excercise before bed, try some sleepy time tea and, meditation and progressive relaxation. i do have natural calm which is a magnesium supplement (comes in powder form and you just put a tablespoon per 8 oz water. on top of that i picked up some valerian from the local co-op. since im running low on edibles i thin i may have to swing by the dispensary and grab some premade edibles. i have been trying to excercise in the mid morning but these last few days im just so tired i cant really work out to much without getting light headed. i think im getting to the point of sheer exhaustion, both menatlly and physically< and hopefully i will drop soon. because of all this, now my shedule is all off.. i want desparatly to take a nap but im gonna force my self to stay awake until about 8 or 9 and then hit the sack and get like 10 hours of sleep, maybe more.. as much as i can. wish me luck! thanks everyone!

You are probably right to stay away from Ambien. I could eat a guys face the morning after taking them. Runt is dead on with the tolerance comment though. You will want to keep your before bed dosage as low as is effective in order to minimize that. Look for some hashplant, durban, or other super stoney bud...

For what it's worth, I have chronic insomnia, and have always had it my entire life... and it's the primary medical reason I use cannabis. Anyway, I find that a heavy indica really takes care of things for me, every night. Just don't smoke the same strain any other time than when you are going to bed, and tolerance shouldn't ever become an issue. Although, if it does, you should get into tinctures. A good, decarboxylated tincture would be a powerful insomnia medicine!

Also, to date, the most knockout strain I've ever grown has been white widow. Which surprises me since that one is supposedly only 60% indica. I couldn't justify keeping it around because it wasn't the best yielder, but every time I smoked it, it was an insane fight to stay awake! Lol. It just took me over and began forcing my eyelids to close, no matter how early in the day it was, or how awake I was! Seriously good insomnia medicine.

Maybe one day when we can have as many plants as we want I will revisit that strain...

Lots of good advice here, already! Only thing I can add is: Avoid caffeine and 'energy drinks' if you can't try to stop drinking or eating anything with caffeine in it, at least 8 hours before bedtime.

Glad to hear you 'documented' this with your M.D.; sometimes this data is very useful for your doc..a few more years down the road!

As suggested; switch up strains...I switch between some unknown (premium) gifted buds, bubba Kush, Blue Dream...u have to stop with one or 2 tokes--or keeps me awake. Hindu Kush, OG and a few others. I seem to need to switch the strain every week or so. And take holidays from it, to reduce my tolerance.

Oh and one thing that hasn't been mentioned...Fatherhood; your life is about to take a big change in a good way! You'll be surprised at how you'll feel once the baby is here! CONGRATULATIONS Dad! I am sure that stress is a major part of your current sleep issues! :ying: jpt

quite interesting that no one has suggested exercise. try working out for a hour or two during the day. you will definitely see an improvement in sleep.

I simply assumed with his meditation, eating well, etc.. Plus, the exercise of making a baby was sufficient, lol.:ying: jpt

A lot of good advice being dispensed on this thread. I have some exerience with this that can help some people.

My Ex-wife was diagnosed with Hypoglycemia at age 27. I won't go thru the tale of everything we tried, etc. For years she slept with a slice of Whole Grain Bread [check ingrs-all grains must be whole]. When she woke up she would eat the bread, and after 15-20 mins she'd fall back to sleep. She still does this. What got things under control was comlex carbs.-whole grains, incl brown rice, and beans + more beans. Pintos were best.

There are many people, including myself, who have the problem of waking up/can't fall asleep, and can't fall asleep at bedtime that are not hypoglycemic. But if you eat supper at 7, go to bed at 11 without eating or [as bad] having eaten a snack that's high in simple carbs, your blood sugar's pretty low. Not stomach growling low, but low enough to interfere with sleep.

You have to allow for the extra calories, but having a small-med meal of complex carbs before bedtime or if you awaken during the night can make a difference.

Also, Tryptophan in capsules is back on the market. The problem 20 years ago where people were poisoned by taking Tryptophan wasn't the Trpf, it was an impurity. Everybody got their Trpt from one Japanese company. That company used a GMO bacteria that had been altered to produce Trpt, but there was a batch where it also produced a poison. It's safe now. Use a good brand. A good place to shop for supplements is iherb.com. Good luck. -granger

My wife is in menopause and has gone from sleeping like a rock to sleeping 2-3 hour stretches -on a good night. She was on Ambien (or the European equivalent) and her sleep quality got progressively worse. I talked her out of the meds, she still sleeps badly but feels more rested. I believe in a lot of meds but not in sleeping pills.

I've been exercising an hour or two a day my whole life. I've still had problems sleeping my whole life. It has definite health benefits, obviously. Sleep just isn't one of them for me.

I agree about the stress thing. My insomnia problems get worse when there's more stress in my life. Usually relationship stress, but I could see how becoming a father would give you a lot to think about. Having a lot to think about just makes it harder to stay asleep.

what works best for me is forcing myself to vape or smoke hash when i wake up , keeps me from getting stuck in turbo mood .

I keep my hash vape on the nightstand by the bed. When I wake up early, I hit the vape and go right back to sleep. :) It's a good feeling, warm and comfortable and fuzzy. On the weekends, anyway. I can't vape hash in the mornings on weekdays and still do well at my job.

I have trouble sleeping too, because of an active (reckless?) life when young that has left my shoulders virtually cartilage-free inside the sockets. tried a drug my doc prescribed called meloxicam. soon after began passing blood in stools. come to find out, it is capable of causing death by uncontrollable bleeding into the lower GI tract & stomach. went back to burning a bowl or two before bed, & that worked. unfortunately for me, the folks I worked for caught on & decided to bring back "random" testing. guess who their first "guest" was ? :ying:

my shoulders are shot from hard work & motorcycle wrecks over the years, now I have arthritis as well. smoking a bowl or two let me sleep a lot better, but got me fired from last job due to failed drug test. you were not allowed to use pain meds on job, nor alternatives when you were not on the job. so basically, I was told "suffer or lose your job. we don't care about the quality of your life". so now I am unemployed & not sleeping well either, as I have had to quit to find work again. talk about a Catch-22...
